7 day design and fab studio focused on building a remote access modular living unit.

OPEN CALL the project for this year's week-long intensive design/fabrication studio is a lightweight, self-supporting, modular living retreat.

STUDIO WORKSHOP six applicants selected from the open call will work directly with professional craftsmen, fabricators, architects, digital specialists, and educators exposing the participants to emerging design, computation, fabrication and construction practices in the field of architecture.

THE GOAL of the studio is the investigation of matter and materiality as a means of interrogating affects, behaviors, and force within the context of fabrication and construction.

Due to their resilience while threatened by a blizzard, students successfully designed, fabricated, and constructed a seven-person sweat lodge over the course of three-and-a-half days. As students constructed the lodge on a mountain of snow, nasty weather didn’t slow down the fast-paced, all-hands-in collaborative design and construction process. The project focused on the design, fabrication, and construction of a sweat lodge using stainless steel and cedar planks on a 300 acre farm, adjacent to a 1860s farm house. Through design and work sessions, focused discussions, and technical sessions with metal fabricators as well as craftsmen, the assignment intended to spark new life into the old house and nearby apple orchard. The farmers also wanted a structure that was visible from the road and reverent to the surrounding fields. OPEN CALL: Summer Studio 2013 - The Hunter and Artists Cabin

August 3 - 11, 2013

The project for this year's week long intensive design and construction workshop is to build a cabin for the Hunter and the Artist. During the week participants are introduced to emerging design processes through hands-on construction. Away from the confines of an insular indoor studio practice, the team of participants and craftsmen will be able to engage architecture directly, both theoretically and physically on site. This year, the goal of the studio is to explore the programmatic relationship between a Hunter + Artist, and build a cabin for both users on the Five Sisters Farm in Perrysburg, NY.

Seven applicants selected from an open call will work closely with local craftsmen and practicing professionals on site, developing practical, technological, and presentational skills.

+ Farm 2013 Open Call: The Hunter + Artist Cabin

Live and work on a 300-acre farm south of Buffalo, New York and participate in an opportunity to transform a 100-year old farm into a sustainable artist colony. You will be participating in a unique program that seeks to engage architecture while working on a functioning farm. +Farm architectural workshop is in it's Third Year of a significantly broader project goal of questioning, envisioning and constructing a model for a 21st century rural farm economy.

Participants

Seven Students will be selected from an open call. Selections will be made based on previous work and presentation skills within the realm of art, agriculture, architecture, design, and fabrication.
