mood gifboard I am a liberal2018-01-20T21:04:46-05:00>2021-10-12T01:42:58-04:00

A mood board is that surface you drop a whole bunch of images and materials on that essentially give the feel and description of what you're designing. A collage of sorts.

The old school way was to put stuff on a foam core board and schlepp it around to client meetings, etc...

Then came Pinterest. There are actual apps meant to create the mood board digitally such as Morpholio.

Recently I have been playing around with GIFs and realized, a GIF can be a different type of mood board. The mood is images over time, but the affect in essence is the same, or at least in theory. Below is my stab at making a Brutalist Concrete Interior Sexy with a White Shag couch...Cheery Brutalism is coming back!

Let's try this with a real project, something a little more serious that would actually end up on a mood board (granted above could - and that client would be awesome!)

So here is a test mood gifboard of a real project -

Builders Had Good Record On Safety, City Says

It is intended to be a towering symbol of the rebirth of Times
Square, but the mirrored Conde Nast building under construction at
Broadway and 42d Street has so far drawn attention mostly because of its
spectacular accidents. The collapse of an elevator support tower
yesterday, which killed an elderly woman, was the third major incident
at the site, and it came less than a month after a carpenter working
near the support tower was crushed to death by a construction elevator
cab. In January, a crane arm six stories above the street buckled and
fell onto a building across 43d Street, shattering part of that
building's glass facade.

If reading building codes does not get you excited, you’re reading them wrong. This is a brief blog post on brick and mortar within the literal confines of building codes, state laws, and colonial law language for the city and state of New York. The commonly misunderstood oldest existing building code for New York City is the considerably modified Building Code of 1938. This is historically incorrect, moreover the 1938 building code that one is allowed in practice today to reference when dealing with building code issues in New York City is the 1968 version. What is mainly stricken from the original 1938 building code are means and methods and technical data. The codes you are allowed to reference today based on the various possible scenarios when working in New York City are 1938, 1968, 2008, and 2014. All four mainly address fire, life safety, and basic health issues at a conceptual level. These codes very much reflect the codes of today and do not delve into means, meth...

Located on the Jersey Shore, little over an hour from New York city (on a good day of traffic) is Asbury Park, New Jersey.

If you like Elk Sausage and one liter mugs of German Beer there’s the Festhalle. Then there’s the Zombie Walk holding the world record for largest gathering of Zombies. St. Patty’s day is fun there as well. The Stone Pony where The Boss – Bruce Springsteen got going…and of course the boardwalk on the beach. The glory days were in the 1920’s through 1940’s, but it may be making a decent comeback now.

At both ends of the Asbury Park boardwalk, although one can continue on the boardwalk through both buildings’ arcades, there are two structures designed by Whitney Warren of Warren and Wetmore. On the south end is what remains of The Casino (1929) that replaced the old Casino that was destroyed by a fire and on the north end is the Paramount Theater, west of boardwalk, and the Convention Hall east of boardwalk (1930).

Twenty (20) years ago (1997) as incoming freshmen students we were told by academics – “You’ll learn construction drawings and contract documents when you get a job, but if you’re interested there always is Architectural Graphic Standards and D.K.
They also told us “Most of you will not graduate as architects, most of you will not ever earn your license, possibly none of you will ever run a firm, and most importantly you’ll never make much money.”

There is a direct correlation between those two statements. Moreover, if a generation ago young budding architects were told - you’ll learn all you need to know in practice so no need to cover it in school - what are they teaching now considering most that teach have limited experience in practice and were told the same thing a generation ago or more.
You ever watch that movie "Ubreakable" with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson?

How often in life do you have that choice: Bruce Willis or Samuel L. Jackson?

Probably never.

Back to Motherboard, NJ

...our man had that choice daily.
