It's been about nine months since I graduated from GSAPP, and since then, I transitioned into the professional world as an architectural designer for a development/architecture practice in Manhattan.

Fast forward a few months. It was in December when I was visiting my family back in Texas that I got really antsy to do something. I mean, work is great. I like my coworkers and the projects were fine. I just needed a bit more ownership in what I was doing. I think that is a problem that school endears us to. We have so much freedom to do useless things and string all those things together into a concept and cohesive application. I did some research onto 3D printing, namely fused filament fabrication. The school bought some Makerbots in my last semester (a collection of all the things being printed at Columbia) that I believe students have direct use, could be wrong. Otherwise we had to submit it to OPS to print.

We had our mid-term review for fast pace//slow space, a tech class by Mark Bearak and Brigette Borders. Our proposal aptly named TINA*, Tensile Integrity Nodal Assemblage, will be up during EOYS alongside two other proposals. Here are some shots of our 1:1 prototype. This is a 4-unit arch comprised of our "boomerangs." The final will be much longer where people can walk underneath. It's going to be crazy and hopefully it doesn't fall on anyone!

After wasting the evening on BuzzFeed, I decided to post some pictures of our work during China Lab 2012 in the Chinese architecture publication "Urban Flux." This was a great project headed by professor Jeffrey Johnson and many of my colleagues at GSAPP and some new friends from CAFA, and Politecnico di Milano. Our work is in Volume 28 and 29!

Also, I've included some process photos of our tensegrity project for Fast Pace, Slow Space. We'll have the whole thing done by EOYS...hopefully

So this is my first post about my trip to China with the ChinaLab Workshop. I'm joined with Hank (M.Arch), Paola (M.Arch), Axelle (M.Arch), Chao (M.Arch), Zoe (M.Arch), May (UP), Lucrecia (UP) and several students from CAFA (Central Academy of Fine Arts) in Beijing. We've been divided into two groups to do research on public space for a multi-developer megablock and new museum typologies. I'm on the public space team!

This is my first time to China and I have a few observations:

1. Things are very inexpensive (Subway=30cents, bottle of water=30cents, breakfast with iced coffee drink=$1.50, bus ride=15cents, new cell phone =$35, new bike=$50, peking duck at Da Dong with wine =$50, coffee=$4(strangely expensive))

2. Not everyone speaks english, obvs.

3. A block is really big, I mean really really big.

So it's the end of the year. I cleared out my really messy desk (I found an SD card that I thought I lost a month ago) and the EOYS is being taken down tomorrow. I want to showcase my class Cinematic Communication with John Szot. It's a wonderful departure from the cerebral exercises in pretty much every other class at GSAPP. We had to create short videos that generate an emotional response, which I think sometimes lack in built work. Why else do people paint their walls pink or yellow!

The notion of the queue does not begin when one falls in line, but when one thinks up the action and involves all the mental and physical steps up to that action. I had a lovely chat with my old studio critic Christoph a. Kumpusch about this semester's Year 1 studio projects. He showed me some great study models by his student Joem Elias Sanez. He is designing a bank (see below). The light table looks much better ever since they changed the acrylic top. That thing used to look like a hooker's coffee table.

He took parts from computers, old-timey appliances, tossed out electronics, and odd bits. Cut em up, reassembled, and made spatial implications with the new objects.

He has a personal blog which can be accessed here .

I particularly like the camera chassis, reminds me of Lebbeus Woods' High House meets 1984.

I'll be attending their mid review to see what the others are up to!

CORE IV with Professor Kazys Varnelis and we're doing a research heavy project on the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Traditional Chinese Architecture with Prof Liu Chang. Rumor has it he flies once a week from China to teach the class. He brought a dougong from China for us to assemble. Sometimes teamwork doesn't work....this time it did.

Tech V: We have to detail out the structure of a building we design. As opposed to last semester's detailing of a case study.

This semester is the housing studio. It is the only time in which we must work in partners for studio. I am in the Lot-Ek studio with has three rotating professors; Ada, Giuseppe, and Thomas. Also we have a new studio director, Hillary Sample from YSOA. Needless to say, I have many voices in my head. I am fortunate to have a partner that performs on the same wave length as me, but it is still a struggle to appease everyone. Unlike other studios, we are tackling issues of housing with urban food production. Also, this is Hillary Sample's first time at GSAPP, so she is getting her bearings and trying out new things.

My main gripe: change MWF studio to just M/Th studio. This gives us enough time to digest opinions and produce something substantial. I think with MWF, we are constantly preparing for another desk-crit, pin-up, or presentation.

This is going to be my first post of a series about the Riwaq Summer Workshop in the West Bank. Nine students including myself were selected from the M.Arch I and Historic Preservation program to document the work of Riwaq, an NGO that specializes in the historic preservation of Palestinian architecture and also produce a charette-style proposal for a project in the throne-village of Deir Ghassaneh. To better understand Palestinian culture and its relationship to Israel, we visited several sites throughout the region and interviewed architects, historians, politicians, and artists.

My first post will be an overview of the places we've visited insofar and my perspective of relevant issues. I understand the political conflicts of the area and encourage open dialogue.

#20: Postpartum Depression

There isn't much structure to this post since there is just too much to get out there. I'll just say it's a teaser for the next 3 or 4 posts.

1) Final review
Amazing! Our professor had to get two Dyson Air Multipliers to alleviate the heat emanating from all the bodies in the room.

We had twice as many reviewers as students in the studio which made for a great dialogue.

Lebbeus Woods even said something positive about my project which is definitely a good thing.

So I'm obsessed with an installation one of my fellow students made in our studio. He set up a live cam from a defunct iPHONE and it takes pictures every 30 seconds of what's going on in 500 North. Part of going to GSAPP is living in New York City. There is an image that this city sets out for the world and it is true to an extent. I want to document unique neighborhoods in New York to defy the popular belief.

Here is a series of photos from Forest Hills, Queens right off the Forest Hills-71st Avenue E F M R trains.

It is a community prevailed by tudor style buildings anchored by a disney land-like city center.

(This house made me laugh, The height of the overhang and the position of the columns in the center as opposed to the periphery just made me shake my head)

Starting next week I'll begin a series of conversations with different students in my program on their perspective on architecture. I'm curious as to see how our generation perceives architecture and how that will affect the profession in the future.

I've been trolling the archinect 2011 M.Arch applicant forum since I was vocalizing my frustrations, concerns, and worries last year. There were the same characters as well but didn't have the overall worry of the recession hanging in the air. There are some remnant feelings, but last year was simply pandemonium- everyone was relying on grad school as their ticket out of the professional chaos.

I've created a cast of characters when it comes to these forums. I think we can find ourselves in them.

The critics for our review. I found out a lot of professors and critics funnel in from Princeton. Seems a little suspicious to concentrate a lot of people from only one school.

Dean Wigley hobbled into our review with his broken foot. He's a really good critic, and is really interested in the student's work. He goes to every single review and participates. I think all schools should adopt such an active dean!

Observations:
I had a conversation with my studio critic about verbal explanation of projects before our 3/4 review yesterday. I asked how could someone describe the motivations of a project if whatever we're doing is emotionally driven. Of course I had my preconceptions of his answers. 1. Emotion is just a manifestation of logic. 2. There is a secret language we haven't been taught yet about verbalizing emotion (possibly spoken in Esperanto only). 3. You're being stupid Anthony! Architects don't have emotions!

We concluded that it's not good in a learning institution to try to use emotions to verbalize a project because it doesn't help the student to rationalize ideas. ...

#11:Atmosphere III:Cell REVIEW

We had our review last week and this time around we didn't combine sections together. It took about 5.5 hrs for 12 students. The reviewers were much more critical this time around and actually had dialogue going, albeit amongs themselves only.

In comparison to last review, the drawings are starting to really develop. A lot more exploded axons, analysis drawings looking more like infographics, and heavy on computer graphics. I have to say the projects were driven by site and everyone picked really unique sites. We had people hanging on lightpoles, off cliffs in the grand canyon, atop NYC watertowers, defunct smoke stakes, and for me inside the Naica Cave.

My biggest criticism was that they didn't see a concise strategy and they said they really appreciated my drawings, graphics, and layout. I think I had to clearly articulate whether it was a system to lay down track in any cave or site spe...

#10: Atmosphere III: Cell (Naica Mine Rollercoaster) PRELIM

We had a preliminary pin-up yesterday for our third project. The prompt is to design a cell/pod for 1 or 2 climatologists to do research and live for 12 hour shifts.

I was looking at fantastic geological sites as a proxy measurement of global weather and found the Naica Mines in Mexico which house the largest crystals in the world. The longest of which is 34 feet. I propose an overhead track to carry the scientists through the mine that could be used later on as a tourist track to visit the system.

This is just a preliminary board to show my progress so it is very weak. The biggest criticism is that I need to make a more solid argument as to why this track is needed and show how it will get constructed.
