ART21: Is your photography process straightforward? Do you use any special techniques?

SUGIMOTO: Special techniques? Well, this is my studio in the Chelsea area of New York. I am on the eleventh floor, facing the north sky. This is like a very traditional nineteenth-century painter’s studio in Paris—a brownstone building—the painter usually takes the top floor, facing north, so you never get the direct sunlight but the beautiful reflection of the sky. I am not using any artificial light here. All I am doing is shading up and down. And then I can control the light, so that I don’t have to be afraid of a New York City blackout.

ART21: The way you’re shooting, is it analogous to early photography?

SUGIMOTO: Yes, the earliest photography—probably nineteenth-century or early-twentieth-century style. People used to use very big-format cameras. And to me, this method still makes the best quality picture. We think we keep making inventions and too...

Imagine 12 researchers, 5 electric vehicles and the whole length of the Pacific Highway running through 3 American states. These are the ingredients of this year’s Visiting School Programme of Love and Crime. Basta! Every year we engage in a 2-week-long investigation in the realm of cinematic architecture in its widest sense.

We started in 2012 in Nice, France. Silent short movies were made in order to work on an approach towards a new structural and visual language, involving and immersing ourselves in Nice, Cote D’Azur’s capital of criminality. Michael confirmed that he indeed created continuous, uninterrupted exposures over those long periods of time. This can be seen through the long light lines in the sky, which were created by the movement of the sun across the sky during those many months.

Michael wanted to highlight that he also sees those lines as an indicator for something else. He told me that "the lines in the sky put our existence, us, our planet into context with the Dance of the Universe, which coexists on an entirely different time scale [from us]."

His works were truly a hard and long labour of love. The so called reciprocity failure or Schwarzschild effect means one can't simply pre-calculate extreme long exposures.

It took Michael months and months of experimenting to make sure the negatives weren't going to be over-exposed. He said, if you'd planned to expose for a year you would have to do an exposure of 6 months, and 3 months beforehand and so on. You would have to collect a lot of data and find solution...

Reading the "Autonauts of the Cosmoroute", by literature and photography giant travellers J. Cortazar and C. Dunlop: In May of ‘82, Julio Cortázar set out with Carol Dunlop aboard their VW camper van (a.k.a. "Fafner") to explore the uncharted territory of the Paris-Marseilles freeway.

It was a route they’d driven before, usually in about ten hours. This time, they loaded up with supplies—food, water, wine, typewriters, cameras—and prepared for an arduous voyage of thirty-three days without leaving the autoroute, at a rate of two rest stops per day. Along the way they would uncover the hidden side of the freeway and take the notion of literature from a serious game to a logical, surreal extreme.

The book is written in the fashion of the exploration books of old, a voyage mixing literature, journal, photography and drawings....

We are starting to be ready.

This summer we are heading South. From the Côte d’Azur to the Calabrian coast, we leave the modernist concrete labyrinth of the Villa Arson to settle in an empty cinema hanging over a cliff. Our cameras and sensibilities will focus on the theatre which will be both our shelter and the anchor for our explorations. Untouched since the early 90s and now threatened by tourism, we are going to distill the essence of the place and reflect upon another raison d’être. The course offers students an opportunity to work in a peaceful and stimulating environment with material and critique at hand : a place to develop a language, to depict thoughts, observations and desires, produce a final visual piece of work, whether documentary or personal. Applicants will submit a possible brief for an intentional approach that will be discussed and adjusted before the beginning of the course. The masters are back! Pascal Schöning and Goswin Schwendinger are teaching again in Nice this summer. Join us on a 10 days intensive architectural film making workshop where you will be diving into the realms of Cinematic Architecture.

Developed through scriptwriting, filming and editing, your short films will express and explore the emotions embedded within space and architecture. With Nice's loaded aesthetics as the backdrop, the French Riviera will form the perfect stage for Love & Crime. BASTA !
