For a good amount of time in my life, I’ve played basketball passionately. I have a deep love for the sport. Basketball has always been a recurring topic in all the things I do. One of my greatest memories growing up was the summer of 8th grade because I was playing daily with the intentions to elevate my game to join the basketball team my freshman year of high school. I would play two or three times a day, rotating from park to park to play against anyone who was on a basketball court. I would never forget how great I felt doing something every single day that brought me so much joy.

Fast forwarding to the present time, it’s pretty saddening seeing some of the places that I’ve made so many great memories become abandoned and unloved. The rims, the nets, and even the floor is not in such good condition like they used to. These places can be in a bad condition where it’s not safe or fun to play in anymore.

Great basketball players don’t become great players overnight. Just like great architects don’t become great architects overnight. It begins with understanding the game, learning the fundamentals, and breaking down footage. This strategy applies to both basketball and the practice architecture. I will discuss how we can use basketball as a way of studying architecture and becoming more knowledgeable of what came before us and how we can apply it to improve our craft.

Understanding the Game

In order to become successful in the development of our craft we need to understand what we’re getting into. There should be something in the back of our minds guiding us with the reasons why we’re doing what we’re doing for choosing this profession and understanding it to have a fulfilling career. Not only are we going to be dedicating a good amount of our time into it. We are also going to want to know where we want to improve in and want to be great at.

From my time at architecture school so far there has been so many lessons that I have learned aside from the profession of architecture. I have had professors say that architecture is somewhat of a gateway profession. Branching out to do something else that you’re interested in that was sparked from architecture school is okay. There has been many iconic people that have studied within the realm of architecture that have later on found themselves doing something else. I believe it is the level of thinking that has for sure led them to discover an inventiveness opportunity in their own interest.
