9 graphic posters inspired by Bjarke Ingels Group projects and syntax in architecture

Giuseppe Gallo, a PhD candidate in Architecture at the University of Palermo, has created a series of posters inspired by 9 Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) projects. Gallo is the creative director of Mirabilia, a communication design studio based in Palermo, with a background in graphic design.

Reflecting on syntax in architecture, Gallo was inspired by the firm's response to functional problems as a method of generating new formal solutions. Take a look at these 9 projects next to their graphic interpretation:

Four centuries of American house architecture surveyed in one charming poster

Pop Chart Lab — the studio that gained renown for their infographics on culturally relevant topics like beer, cats, comic-book villains, famous TV characters, and so on — recently came out with "The Architecture of American Houses: A Structured Survey from 1600 to the Present", an enticing graphic chart that packs in four centuries' worth of American housing architecture.

The poster is a nifty conversation starter, showing off 121 styles ranging from 17th century post-medieval English homes, the distinct Tudor facades, the gabled roofs and A-Frames of midcentury modernism, to the McMansions that rose in the 1990s. The illustrations are conveniently organized into seven main categories and 40 subdivisions. Each poster is also individually numbered and signed by the artists.

Relax on Kepler-16b: Where Your Shadow Always Has Company

Remember the memorable double sunset on the desert planet Tatooine in the original Star Wars? As it turns out, such a vista isn't unimaginable – if you can get to Kepler-16b, an exoplanet about 196 light years away. Of course, if you did get there, you might be disappointed to find that the planet is actually a gas giant, or that its temperature is close to that of dry ice.

One of a thousand such exoplanets recently discovered by NASA, Kepler-16b has been commemorated in a poster designed by Joby Harris, David Delgado and Dan Goods. In a style reminiscent of early 20th-century travel advertisements, the poster is part of a series that playfully celebrates the exciting discoveries that have been made by Kepler telescope, launched in 2009 to discover Earth-like planets. Published under the guise of the fictional "Exoplanet Travel Bureau," the posters help bring the excitement of the project into legible terms for us layfolk.

The Design Value of the Lecture Poster

A selection of GSD events posters has been acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago for its permanent collection...Zoë Ryan, Chair and John H. Bryan Curator of Architecture and Design, described the acquisition as "an invaluable addition to the department's holdings."

In the archives of the Architecture and Design department of the Art Institute of Chicago are one-of-a-kind drawings and models. These are artifacts of built and unbuilt projects documenting the process and ideas of architects from Adler and Sullivan to Jeanne Gang and Diller + Scofidio. There are also architectural fragments, design objects, and furniture pieces which make up the museum's robust collection. The most recent acquisition to the department's holdings, however might simply be stored in a tube or a modest flat file drawer.

Students and faculty at any architecture school are used to receiving a folded copy of the semester's visiting lecturers in their mailbox. These seasonal posters become ubiquitous around campus as they are taped, pinned, and posted along the hallways also. So what has inspired the elevation of such event posters to become archived by the Art Institute of Chicago?
