Gould Evans receives 6th Chicago Athenaeum Award with adaptive reuse library project

Gould Evans is no stranger to executing award-winning library and community-focused projects as a nationally recognized architecture and design firm. From the expansion of the 1970's Brutalist-style Lawrence Public Library to the renovations of New Orleans Public Libraries, the team at Gould Evans just added another prize-winning library project to their portfolio, the Olathe Indian Creek Public Library.

The building has received accolades like the Honor Award by AIA Kansas City for its concept of developing a hub for "community and content creation — instead of only content consumption." On November 4, it was announced that the firm received its 6th Chicago Athenaeum Award for the Kansas-based project. The institution's American Architectural Awards program highlights new and "cutting-edge" design projects within the United States.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design has announced the winners of The International Architecture Awards for 2021.

Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the program celebrates the world’s best and most boundary-pushing buildings and urban planning projects. A shortlist of 400 projects had been selected from over 800 entries from 46 countries.

“These global awards show how well-considered, well-delivered, and well-performing architecture has the immense potential to improve lives and communities,” said The Chicago Athenaeum Museum President and CEO, Christian Narkiewicz-Laine. “We are very pleased to be able to celebrate some of the most innovative, ingenious and impactful architecture in the world—designed by some of the most talented architects of our time.”

The new U.S. Consulate General Matamoros announced as a winner of The Chicago Athenaeum's 2021 International Architecture Award

The Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations’ (OBO) new Consulate General project in Matamoros, Mexico was awarded The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design’s 2021 International Architecture Award. It joins a collection of some of the world’s best new buildings and urban planning projects from over 35 countries.

The Chicago Athenaeum, alongside The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, organized this award program to honor and recognize international projects that stretch the boundaries of architecture, regardless of style, complexity, and scheme and budget size.

Within the Government Buildings category, the U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros was designed by Richärd Kennedy Architects and constructed by B.L. Harbert International with Page Architects as the architect of record. The American Architecture Awards has been America’s highest public tribute for architecture since its inception in 1994. Co-organized by The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the prize is presented to recently built top-notch projects in architecture, landscape, and planning that were either built in the U.S. or abroad by the country's leading designers and planners, like Steven Holl, Renzo Piano, and Olson Kundig, to name a few.

Over 130 projects around the world were awarded in multiple categories. Here are a few of them:

Santiago Calatrava wins The European Prize for Architecture

On November 17th, Santiago Calatrava, whose designs have inspired awe both for breaking aesthetic and financial boundaries, will be awarded The European Prize for Architecture at the World Trade Center in New York City. Calling Santiago Calatrava a "visionary theorist, philosopher and utopian and a true artist in the craft of engineering and architectonic expressionism" Chicago Athenaeum president Christian Narkiewicz-Laine went on to say that "it is significant that the European Prize for Architecture recognizes Mr. Calatrava as an architect, engineer, sculptor and painter." Past recipients of the prize include Bjarke Ingels (2010), and Alessandro Mendini (2014).

UNC Coastal Studies Institute Wins Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award

“We are thrilled that UNC CSI’s Research Building has received this international design award. It brings attention to how good design can integrate beauty innovation and functionality to create a facility that serves as an important resource for Eastern North Carolina.”

The UNC Coastal Studies Institute Research Building has been awarded the International Architecture Award for Best New Global Design (2014) by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Architects Clark Nexsen and Associate Architects Cahoon & Kasten have been honored by the Chicago Athenaeum for best new global design of the facility in Eastern North Carolina. The annual International Architectural Awards program is among the most prestigious building awards program honoring new and cutting-edge design.

This year, the Museum received a record number of projects for new buildings, landscape architecture, and urban planning projects from around the globe. The awards jury selected projects from 28 nations “that reflect the changing state of global architecture and reveal emerging new design directions by today’s most visionary practitioners.”
