Meet the first class of Harvard Climate Justice Design Fellows

Harvard University has today announced its first-ever cohort for the brand new Climate Justice Design Fellowship, recognizing young leaders across the country in the fields of environmental justice advocacy, law, and climate organizing.

The first class of fellows consists of seven members, primarily from the non-profit sector. Each fellow will be tasked with pursuing data-oriented tools (e.g., the First Street Foundation’s new wildfire risk map) to aid their individual communities’ strides toward environmental justice.

The fellowships are funded through Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) and are pilot programs of the broader Harvard-Google Data+Climate Initiative that incorporates proprietary innovations like Google Data Commons and the data visualization service Glue to further empower both scholars and engineers to fight challenges related to climate change.

NOMA's Foundation Fellowship nurtures the next generation of architects and designers through mentorship and professional development at 19 architecture firms

Mentorship opportunities for young architects and design professionals have been an ongoing mission for The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Now in its third iteration, NOMA announces 24 architecture students who will be part of the 2021 summer cohort for the NOMA Foundation Fellowship (NFF).

This two-month research fellowship will take place in person and virtually at 19 leading U.S.-based architecture firms. NOMA shares: "The NFF 2021 cohort will engage in design research and benefit from firm mentorship." In addition, NOMA has worked hard in building partnerships with various architecture firms that have collaborated with the NFF to provide professional experience to underrepresented students. This fellowship allows students to connect with the profession by establishing a pipeline for eventual employment once the fellowship ends.

In a continued effort to support and mentor emerging architects and designers, firms like Kohn Pedersen Fox have developed scholarships and fellowship opportunities for students to explore and expand their architecture experiences.

"Each year, Kohn Pedersen Fox presents awards to students who are in their penultimate year at one of the twenty-seven design schools with whom KPF has partnered," shares the firm. "The purpose of the award is to allow students to broaden their education through a summer of travel before their final year at school [...] Recipients are awarded cash prizes to fund summer research on far-reaching topics that push the boundaries of critical thinking and architectural design."

Established in 2015, the Harry der Boghosian Fellowship is a one-of-a-kind program initiated by Syracuse University. The program provides emerging faculty members and designers early in their careers the opportunity to spend a year "developing a body of design research based on an area of interest while teaching at the School of Architecture."

Created in memory of Harry der Boghosian '54 by his sister Paula der Boghosian '64, this year's Fellow is architectural designer Leen Katrib. Born in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Katrib received her Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from the University of Southern California and earned her M.Arch from Princeton University. She has worked for architectural practices such as Marvel, LTL Architects (Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis), McEwen Studio, Peter Marino Architect, and OMA. Ten architecture students from five HBCU's have recently been appointed to NOMA's 2021 Foundation Fellowship cohort

Ten architecture students from five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are selected to be a part of NOMA's 2021 Foundation Fellowship (NFF). In 2020 NOMA announced the fellowship's inaugural cohort that consisted of 30 students from over 20 architecture schools across the United States.

The fellowship's mission was to provide professional experiences to underrepresented students through mentorship and direct collaboration with architecture firms. With the number of licensed Black architects slowly but steadily increasing, the fellowship allows students to stay engaged within the profession and provide a direct pipeline towards future employment opportunities.

American Academy in Rome announces 2020-21 Rome Prize Fellowships

The American Academy in Rome has announced the winners of the 2020-1 Rome Prize and Italian Fellowships. Selected from a pool of 1,031 applications from 46 US states and territories, including Puerto Rico and the District of Colombia, and 15 different countries, those selected consist of 22 American and two Italian artists and scholars. Each will receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board for four to seven months at the Academy's campus in Rome.

Due to COVID-19, the residential Fellowships will begin in January 2021 and end in August. The Academy is also welcoming a new director: Avinoam Shalem, who was a 2016 Resident. Shalem will begin a three-year term in January with the Fellows. He is currently the Riggio Professor for the Arts of Islam in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University.

The University of Oregon is currently seeking applicants for its latest cohort of Visiting Faculty Fellowships in Design for Spatial Justice.

The initiative, according to a listing currently featured on the Archinect Jobs board, “will award up to six faculty fellowships in design/research and teaching for durations of two terms to three years, to start as early as September 2020.” Applications will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2020.

Aleksandra Jaeschke announced as recipient of 2019 Wheelwright Prize

This morning, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design announced Polish architect Aleksandra Jaeschke as the winner of the 2019 Wheelwright Prize. Established in 1935, the coveted $100,000 architectural grant supports travel-based research and investigative approaches to contemporary design.

A Harvard GSD graduate, Jaeschke was selected by a seven person jury for her proposal UNDER WRAPS: Architecture and Culture of Greenhouses a project born from her long-term fascination with horticultural operations and the resulting relationships between plants and humans. Prior work of hers has explored sustainability as a building-scale issue; and looked at how building regulations and new technologies shape environmentally-driven design.

Lily Zhang wins Steedman Fellowship; $50K travel grant among largest U.S. architecture awards

If architecture is in a relationship, posits Lily Zhang, then storage is its selfless soul mate: essential and supportive but typically overlooked.

“Storage allows architecture to maintain order,” said Zhang, an architectural designer based in New York and winner of the 2018-19 James Harrison Steedman Memorial Fellowship in Architecture.

“We keep our active inhabitable areas free of clutter and the appearance of overindulgence,” Zhang added, “while banishing unused and unwanted items to the basement, the warehouse, the broom cupboard or the mechanical room.

“Yet rather than dismissing these spaces as passive and inert, what we stash away and where we hide them are as revealing as what we display, if not more.”

A+D Museum & RCHS announce The Alley Fellowship

The A+D Museum has announced the unveiling of their inaugural fellowship program, developed in collaboration with the LA-based multi-disciplinary design firm, Rios Clementi Hale Studios.

The aim of the The Alley Fellowship is to produce a two-month rotating exhibition and lecture series and is open to emerging, young, progressive artists in Los Angeles. The fellowship will be awarded to six artists, selected by a seven-member jury consisting of artists, designers, and architects from the A+D Museum and Rios Clementi Hale Studios. The jury will select based on which projects best embody the spirit of transdisciplinary creative exploration, a key focus area for RCHS and A+D.

Belgian Architect Aude-Line Dulière Wins Harvard GSD’s 2018 Wheelwright Prize

The Harvard University Graduate School of Design has awarded its coveted $100,000 architectural research travel grant, the Wheelwright Prize, to Belgian architect Aude-Line Dulière. Established in 1935 and originally intended for Harvard GSD alumni, the fellowship has now become an open international competition supporting travel-based research and investigative approaches to contemporary design.

Dulière has won the 2018 Prize for her proposal Crafted Images: Material Flows, Techniques, and Uses in Set Design Construction—a project which aims "to examine construction methods and supply systems in the global film industry, engaging the space-making elements of film and set design as well as potential innovations around material use and reuse throughout architecture and construction generally."

The University of Pennsylvania School of Design has established a new $50,000 fellowship as well as an international medal of excellence thanks to a generous $1.25 million donation courtesy of alumna Lori Kanter Tritsch (MArch '85). "PennDesign has been home to so many visionary architects,” said Lori Kanter Tritsch, a practicing architect and longtime partner of Estée Lauder Executive William Lauder. "We want to celebrate today’s visionaries and encourage the next generation to follow their lead” she added.

Dubbed the MAD Architecture Travel Fellowship, it sends five international students to China, and five Chinese students out of the country.
