A 12th-century Scottish monk may have invented modern architectural drawing techniques, new research claims

Research from a professor at the University of Aberdeen has advanced evidence that the art and practice of architectural drawing may have been invented by a 12th-century Scottish clergyman working in Paris around the time of the construction of Notre-Dame Cathedral and other important Gothic structures.

Dr. Karl Kinsella is a lecturer in Medieval Art History at the institution. His new book, God’s Own Language: Architectural Drawing in the Twelfth Century, presents the idea that a previously unknown monk named Richard the Scot was likely the first person to use the term ‘plan’ for drawings, sections, and elevations he apparently made in order to demonstrate the vantage point of the prophet Ezekiel's visions using then-modern concepts of geometry.

NOMA announces its 2023 summer fellowship cohort by welcoming 13 architecture students and graduates

Continuing to not only champion but provide pathways to academic and professional advancement, the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) celebrates another fellowship cohort of young designers.

The NOMA Future Faces (NFF), formerly known as the NOMA Foundation Fellowship, recognizes 13 architecture students and graduates for this 2023 cohort as they engage in a two-month-long summer fellowship.

These fellowships are "hosted at leading architecture firms across the country where fellows engage in design research and benefit from firm mentorship," explains NOMA. "In an industry where only two percent of licensed architects in the United States identify as Black, the NFF plays a crucial role in providing valuable professional experience to underrepresented students."

Yale Architecture names new scholarship in honor of Francis Kéré

The Yale School of Architecture has just announced a new scholarship named after 2022 Pritzker Prize winner Francis Kéré in the interest of supporting African students at the school as they complete their journey to a career in architecture.

“There are so many aspiring African architects, and with a Yale education, they will be able to excel,” Kéré said. “I am the first African architect to be recognized with a Pritzker, and, thanks to the Francis Kéré Scholarship, I hope there will be many more to come.”

Kéré taught at Yale as a William B. and Charlotte Shepherd Davenport Visiting Professor in 2019 and, more recently, as the prestigious Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor in 2022. He has remained active in the school’s academic community, which he referred to as “welcoming and vibrant” and also a “place to be.”

Former Columbia GSAPP dean James Stewart Polshek has been posthumously honored with a new endowed scholarship in recognition of the commitment to design excellence and social causes he embodied while helming the school for fifteen years.

The Ennead founder passed away in September and was subsequently remembered with a foundational gift of $125,000 from the firm that was meant to keep alive his enduring legacy as both an architect and educator. The new $350,000 total fund will thus be given in perpetuity to an M.Arch student in their final year of study whose work demonstrates the intellectual rigor and social concern Polshek strove for beginning with his appointment in 1972.

The Catholic University of America and Yale School of Architecture have established a scholarship fund to honor late Ugandan architect Doreen Adengo

A new endowment fund will provide four-year scholarship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing an architecture education in honor of the late architect Doreen Adengo who passed away in 2022 after battling cancer. The scholarship fund has been jointly established by Yale School of Architecture and the Catholic University of America.

Born in Uganda in 1976, Adengo received her B.Arch from Catholic University in 2000 before entering Yale and graduating with an M.Arch in 2005. From there, she went on to found her own eponymous practice (Adengo Architecture) after ten years of working in offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and London.

Adengo left behind a legacy of achievement in both urbanism and architecture that helped greatly influence the development of contemporary architecture and urban design strategies while earning her the reputation and status of a role model for young practitioners.

The Royal College of Art has recently unveiled a new scholarship named for its late visiting professor and designer, Virgil Abloh.

The £35,000 (about $40,000) RCA Virgil Abloh Scholarship will cover the full tuition and fees for talented Black British students facing financial restrictions who are interested in studying any program at the London institution’s School of Design.

The scholarship also provides important networking and professional opportunities to students as supported by Abloh’s former creative partner Samuel Ross and additional parties in various creative industries across the UK.

The University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has received $1.35 million from retired urban planner and Taubman alumni David Lepo '78. The gift adds to the David A. Lepo Urban Planning Scholarship Fund, which he established in January 2022.

The scholarship supports students with financial needs in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program. It also places a special focus on students from Ohio, which is where Lepo is from.

“I've had a very fortunate life, and that includes the opportunity to attend Taubman College,” said Lepo. “Some people don't have as easy a way as I did. I was very fortunate. I was an out-of-state student and could still afford to go to Michigan. I want everybody to have that chance because there's no reason not to allow everybody to rise to their best.”

The Interior Design program at Woodbury University's School of Architecture has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Angelo Donghia Foundation.

The Angelo Donghia Foundation is part of the renowned home furnishings company Donghia Inc., founded by the late American interior designer Angelo Donghia. The award will be used over the course of three years for a Senior Studio program for Interior Design students and help fund "fieldwork study expenses," allowing students to gain hands-on experience during their final year of study.

A scholarship fund honoring the legacy of the late Kevin Roche has been established by the Connecticut Architecture Foundation (CAF) in coordination with the local firm Svigals + Partners and in time for what would have been the Pritzker winner’s 100th birthday this year. Roche’s children, who were behind the decision to repurpose their father’s heirlooms, said the establishment’s purpose was to “[make] the Pritzker work for the betterment of architecture in a new way, refocusing its lens from the most heralded to the least.”

The Hip Hop Architect Michael Ford has surprised a high school senior student in Detroit with a $10,000 scholarship from The Hip Hop Architecture Camp to study architecture.

Sarah Shaw-Nichols is a student at Ford’s former school Cass Technical High School. The scholarship was awarded through Ford's initiative that aims to introduce underrepresented youth to architecture, urban planning, creative placemaking, and economic development through the lens of hip hop culture.

The funding for the scholarship came from Herman Miller, which has recently collaborated with Ford on a variety of projects, such as the Conversations for Change program and a custom Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman piece.

ARE scholarships for aspiring Black architects launched by the Architects Foundation

The Architects Foundation has announced the launch of the Large Firm Roundtable (LFRT) ARE Scholarship, providing support for aspiring Black architects within the licensing process. Through the scholarship, the organization is aiming to double the number of licensed Black architects in the United States by 2030.

The scholarship will cover the cost of the ARE, a one-year subscription to the AIA’s exam prep course ArchiPrep, one year of dues to either the AIA or NOMA, one year NCARB record fees, and $500 in study materials. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must identify as Black or African American, be eligible for the ARE, hold an NCARB Record, and be either an Associate AIA or a member of NOMA.

Architecture, master planning, and interior design firm, The Architectural Team (TAT), has announced a scholarship in partnership with Boston’s Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT).

“The Architectural Team Endowed Scholarship” is a need-based scholarship for students pursuing degrees in Wentworth’s School of Architecture and Design. It is intended to build a pipeline into professional practice for underrepresented students.

Applications are set to open in early 2022 for the 2022-23 academic year. TAT will make a $25,000 contribution to the scholarship, which will be dollar-matched by funds from the Wentworth endowment as part of the school’s Advancing Student Access and Potential (ASAP) Challenge program. In addition, scholarship recipients will have an option to apply for a one-semester co-op opportunity at TAT, allowing them to receive professional experience and build networks.

Pratt Institute School of Architecture announced in late July the launch of the Kathryn and Kenneth Chenault Scholarship, an initiative started by Pratt Board of Trustee member Kathryn Chenault and her husband Kenneth to "support diversity in the School of Architecture."

The IDC (Institute of Design and Construction) Foundation has awarded Pratt Institute's School of Architecture with a $130,000 grant. This will be second year that the IDC Foundation has awarded the department with funding. According to a Pratt press release, the IDC's gift "continues to support enhancing education in architectural design, engineering, and building construction through scholarships and fellowships, and student experiences such as study abroad programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Twenty-four Pratt students have already benefited from their first year of funding."

Druker (Loeb Fellow ’76) and the Bertram A. and Ronald M. Druker Charitable Foundation — the largest single gift in the school’s history.

Druker’s long-standing involvement in the development of the school goes back to him being one of the early inductees into the school’s prestigious Loeb Fellowship program, a time during which he first articulated many of the principles that define not only his projects but also his perspective on urban planning and design across the region.

Followed from the Future is Now forum held in Madrid's Royal Theater on the 1st of June, Mayor of Madrid and Lord Foster brought together leading figures in the fields of science, design, architecture, politics, art, economics and history, to a capacity audience of 2,000 and 75,000 online viewers.

With the support of the Rolex Institute, the Foundation will host week-long events in its Madrid Headquarters in November 2017. Jennifer Ly wins 2017 Rotch Travelling Scholarship

Jennifer Ly, a designer at Foster + Partners, was recently announced as the lucky winner of the 2016-17 Rotch Travelling Scholarship. Founded in 1883 in honor of Benjamin Smith Rotch, it allows the recipient to travel for at least 6 months studying architecture.

Starting with 110 entrants in stage one, only five finalists advanced to present their projects to the jury in Boston. Jennifer Ly ultimately won the jury's favor with her project “New Common”. Based in Silicon Valley, Ly — who received her master's in architecture at Harvard GSD in 2014 — will receive $38,500 to fund at least six months of travel in the coming year.

For the tenth year in a row, RIBA and Norman Foster are offering a traveling scholarship in the form of €7,000 (an increase over last year's €6,000) to the destination of the winning student's choice. Students can't enter directly: RIBA and CAA validated schools are allowed to submit only one application each for one student by April 28th, whose merits will then be judged by a panel consisting of both financial backer Norman Foster and RIBA members. In a quasi-apocalyptic vein, the student's proposed research topic should "relate to the survival of our cities and towns and fall under one of the following themes:

Rotch Scholar Christopher Karlson publishes yearlong research on European performing arts-based architecture

After Christopher Karlson won the coveted Rotch Travelling Scholarship in 2011, he was required to document his research as images, drawings, and text to be submitted as a compilation report to the Rotch Trustees. Now, that report is finally available to the public as a print-on-demand book.

The 363-page document shows Karlson's yearlong journey to 35 European performance arts landmarks as an exploration of commercialized culture in the 'post-Bilbao' period (1997 to the present).

In place since 2004, this scholarship is intended to recognize and foster students who have demonstrated a talent and passion for architecture. $10,000 will be awarded to one scholarship recipient; a currently enrolled student entering their final year in a graduate or undergraduate level, NAAB accredited, architecture program in the fall of 2014. Amber Long, young Philadelphia architect, killed in attempted robbery

Archinect is shocked and saddened to report the death of Philadelphia architect Amber Long, a recent Philadelphia University graduate working for U.S. Construction Inc. Long was shot and killed this past Sunday night, the victim of an attempted robbery while walking home with her mother. She was known for her passion in sustainability and green architecture, both as a student and in her young professional life, planning to become a LEED-certified, registered architect.

Friends, family and Philadelphia University colleagues have joined together to create a scholarship foundation in Long's memory, to be awarded to a student with the energy, selflessness and passion for sustainability that Long was known for.
