Dora Epstein Jones, former A+D Museum Director, joins UT Austin School of Architecture faculty

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture has announced Dora Epstein Jones will be joining its faculty in the fall as one of five new appointments.

Previously, Jones served as former faculty at Texas Tech University at Huckabee College of Architecture in Lubbock and will be coming to campus as the school’s newest Professor of Practice. She had previously been employed as the executive director of Los Angeles’ A+D Architecture and Design Museum prior to her tenure at Texas Tech, where she was instrumental in steering the development of a new research praxis for faculty that “forge[d] stronger interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture, philosophy, and history.”

Heather Woofter named new dean of UT Austin's School of Architecture

Heather Woofter has been appointed dean of the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture (UTSOA) following a national search to replace Michelle Addington following her successful tenure, which began in July of 2017.

She is currently the Director of the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis's Sam Fox School of Design and will begin her new role at UTSOA effective August 15. Woofter comes to the position with prior academic experience at her undergraduate alma mater Virginia Tech and other universities, where she was a visiting professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and Konkuk University in South Korea.

Get Lectured: University of Texas at Austin, Spring '23

The University of Texas at Austin's Spring lineup of public events and lectures is kicking off our 2023 Get Lectured series with visits from speakers who will "address contemporary topics like housing, social equity, and the impact of technology on our fields."

On January 18, the school welcomes Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu of Oyler Wu Collaborative. January 23 brings a lecture from Tod Williams of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. February 8 will host a lecture by Michael Hsu of Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, followed by a lecture from Alex Swender on February 10 and a lecture from Alex Joseph of PARTISANS on February 13.

Lorcan O’Herlihy of Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects will present his lecture on March 8, followed by Ross Altheimer and Maura Rockcastle of TEN x TEN Studio, who will give a lecture on March 27. A visit and lecture from Jorge Pardo will take place on March 29, followed by a presentation from Karl Klein on April 3, concluding the school's Spring lecture series.

UT Austin's Materials Lab awarded $60,000 grant to reframe collection with focus on sustainable materials

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture's Materials Lab and Interior Design Program have been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Angelo Donghia Foundation. The money will be used to reimagine how students learn about materials by reframing the Materials Lab’s existing collection to better highlight sustainable products.

Beginning this fall, two graduate students and one undergraduate interior design student will work closely with Jen Wong, Lecturer and Director of the Materials Lab, to restructure the initiative’s circulating library and digital databases. They will be tasked with employing industry-standard sustainability criteria and certifications from resources, including the Mindful Materials database, the International Living Future Institute, and Building Green, to develop a new classification system for the collection. It will highlight materials relating to circularity, embodied carbon, health and toxicity, and social equity.
