RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Fellow will look at the adaptation of urban wildlife to mega-cities

The Royal Institute of British Architecture, alongside Norman Foster, has announced the winner of their twelfth Travelling Scholarship. After receiving the highest number of entries of any year thus far, the annual, £7,000 prize has been awarded to Steven Hutt of University of Greenwich for his proposal, ‘East of Eden.’

Travelling to Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan, Steven will investigate how urban wildlife has adapted to the rapid rise of densely populated mega-cities in the far east of Asia. Some of the urban environments Hutt will be looking include the ‘Sanzhi Pod City’—a dilapidated city that has become a breeding ground for five new species of orchid—and the wider Pearl River Delta—a rapidly growing concrete jungle with conditions that has also allowed other species to thrive—among others.

The 2018 RIBA Norman Foster Traveling Scholarship, supported by the Norman Foster Foundation, is now open and accepting applications from enrolled architecture students globally. One winner will be awarded a £7,000 grant by a panel of judges, which will include Lord Foster and RIBA President Ben Derbyshire.

Now in its 11th year, the scholarship focuses on international research, in a location of the student’s choice, related to the survival of towns and cities. Previous winners have travelled through the Americas, Europe, Africa, South East Asia, the Middle, and Russia.

The list of institutions invited to nominate students is selected by the RIBA and approved by Foster + Partners. As in previous years, this list will include all institutions that offer qualifications validated by the RIBA or are recognized by the Commonwealth Association of Architects. Foster + Partners announced today that University of Lincoln student Chloe Loader was awarded the 2017 RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, a yearly £7,000 student scholarship that gives the recipient an opportunity to travel internationally and “research the future survival of our cities and communities”.

In her submission “Emerging Cities: Sustainable Master-Planning in the Global South”, Loader will examine how the cities of Curitiba, Mumbai, and Jakarta have each handled rapid urbanization to identify how other cities with similar economics and demographics can potentially evolve.

She'll begin her travels in Curitiba, Brazil, where she will study how the city has developed a successful urban model while handling large influxes of rural migrants. She will then travel to Mumbai and Jakarta to compare and contrast them with her Curitiba findings. Loader will conclude her project by exploring potential design strategies for urban development to engage communities.
