Jean Nouvel designs 'dazzling and lasting' kitchen for Reform

Jean Nouvel has collaborated with Danish design company Reform on a new kitchen unit, the first designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect. Described as “tight and minimalist, yet characteristically dazzling and lasting,” the kitchen is defined by an understated, art deco design language. The kitchen is available in black or untreated metal, both featuring a monochrome design activated by diffuse reflections across their surface.

The kitchen is constructed of steel imbued with vertical ridges, finished in a high gloss, reflective surface. The countertops are available in stainless steel with gray and black Fenix laminate, complimenting and accentuating the unit’s reflectivity.

Construction update: Jean Nouvel's Hekla Tower for the La Défense district in Paris

Jean Nouvel’s Tour Hekla development in Paris’ La Défense financial district is nearing completion after construction began in late 2018.

The 49-story building represents the Pritzker winner’s third attempt to build in La Défense after designs in 1989 and 2008 went unrealized owing to engineering difficulties and economic concerns. Now, with an approval behind them, the team at Ateliers Jean Nouvel has combined with developers Hines and AG Real Estate to plan 76,000 square meters of new office space that will allow nearly 5,800 workers flexibility and added green space.

Phase one of Jean Nouvel's Ecuadorian residential complex is underway

In the mountains of Ecuador's Cymbayá valley stands Jean Nouvel's latest residential project, Aquarela. In collaboration with local architecture developer Uribe Schwarzkopf, a new complex will transform the area into nine residential spaces.

Initial construction began in 2017, and the 136,580-square meter project is warping up phase one of its development. The 650 unit project aims to "echo" the surrounding environment with its lush greenery overflowing the stone covered balconies. The project team worked with Uribe Schwarzkopf to maintain their sustainability focus by following an "eco-efficiency matrix dictating the conscious use of materials to generate the least possible impact on the environment."

Jean Nouvel’s 53 West 53 supertall in New York City nears completion

As work on the 1,050-foot-tall 53 West 53 tower designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel in New York City moves toward completion, crews have made progress installing the multicolored aluminum panel cladding that wraps the tower’s stacked pinnacles.

The 53-story tower is attached to the Museum of Modern Art—“Purchasers will receive title to a special Benefactor MoMA membership, affording many substantial museum benefits and privileges,” a press release reads—and features 145 luxury residences.

Designed with expressed diagrid structural elements and a sharply tapered form, the tower offers a collection of condominiums ranging in configuration from one to five-bedrooms with the largest units taking up an entire floor of the tower and a series of duplex penthouses capping the building. The penthouse units, according to marketing materials, are accessed via private elevator bays.

Jean Nouvel sues to stop €170.6 million fine for late delivery of Paris Philharmonie

French architect Jean Nouvel is moving to sue the Paris Philharmonie following a 2017 ruling against the architect that levied a €170.6 million fine on him for delivering the the group's new €386 million performance hall project late and extremely over budget.

The project, which opened in 2015, was originally budgeted to come in at €173 million, but was delivered more than two years late due to construction delays and on-site design changes that Nouvel says "martyred" and "sabotaged" the project.

According to a report in The Guardian, Nouvel's lawyers explained that the fines are "'unprecedented in the world of architecture' and amounted to a death sentence for Nouvel’s studio."

A group of leading French architects have denounced a plan to renovate the Gare du Nord, one of Paris’s main train stations, calling the designs that would turn the station into a glassy, mammoth, restaurant-filled shopping mall “indecent,” “absurd” and “unacceptable.”

Plans to drastically expand and modernize Paris's foremost train station were unveiled in 2018 with a commitment to meet the increased travel volume during the Olympic Summer Games in 2024 and cope with the more complex arrival procedures of British nationals in the post-Brexit era.

An open letter signed by leading architectural figures, including Pritzker Prize laureate Jean Nouvel, now sharply rebukes the renovation plan.

"Forcing hundreds of thousands of people to walk through commercial spaces becomes unbearable when this gift to trade goes with long and unnecessarily complicated journeys," recites the New York Times a section of the letter which was published in Le Monde this week. "This project is unacceptable and we demand a rethink from floor to rafters."

Along the banks of the Rhône and Saône rivers in Lyon stands an unmissable new tower designed by the famed architect Jean Nouvel. The 16-story building's pastel-colored facades and angular parapet present a stark contrast to the tower's more traditional industrial and residential apartment block neighbors.

The neighborhood of La Confluence is transforming into an area filled with contemporary architecture, quite a change from its history as a formerly industrial area. Amid this graying backdrop, the new residential tower, called Ycone, gently adds a tone of color and material richness.

'A tattooed museum:' Jean Nouvel on his design for the National Museum of Qatar

[...] the museum site is surrounded by the urban landscape of a modern city, but it still remains under the influence of the desert and the sea, the French architect tells The Art Newspaper in an interview in his Paris studio. Hence his choice of a design inspired by the desert rose, a flower-like cluster of gypsum crystals, which he sees as the “most powerful symbol of the desert, and the influence of wind, time and water”.

Interviewed by The Art Newspaper, Jean Nouvel talks about his design process that lead to the creation of the monumental National Museum of Qatar which opened in the capital city of Doha this week. "The place has become a pedestal for images, a sort of transmitter, a tattooed museum," Nouvel explains.

"Asked about the welfare of migrant construction workers, an issue which has drawn international scrutiny in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Nouvel says that his team checked that there were decent working and living conditions for employees of the museum building project."

Jean Nouvel's “desert rose” National Museum of Qatar opens to the public

Following over a decade of planning, the National Museum of Qatar finally opened its doors to the public today. Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, the 560,000 square-foot museum was built with a complex structure of interlocking curved discs and cantilevered angles, which was inspired by the rose-like, crystallized formations from the desert. The building's sand-colored concrete reflects its desert environment so that it appears to emerge from the ground.

A central court called the Baraha sits within the museum's ring of galleries and will serve as an outdoor gathering space for cultural events. Inside, this structure of interlocking disks continues and creates a variety of irregularly shaped volumes.

Jean Nouvel's controversial 53 West 53rd Street residential skyscraper nears completion

Last week, the final piece of the third and highest apex of Jean Nouvel’s first residential skyscraper was anchored and installed over Midtown. 53 West 53rd Street now stands 1,050 feet tall, and is currently the 7th-tallest skyscraper under construction in New York City.

If the introduction of 432 Park Avenue, the 1,300-foot-tall Rafael Viñoly and SLCE Architects-designed apartment tower wasn't a jarring enough addition to the New York skyline, the completion of a controversial second building will soon normalize the movement towards ultra-tall residential living.

Across from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Jean Nouvel's 53 West 53rd Street apartment tower is nearly complete. At 1,050 feet tall, it is currently the 7th tallest building under construction in the city. While not the tallest of the supertall that are coming to define New York City's skyline, it stands as a unique triumph for the French architect and a bold addition to the MoMA block. All architects must be fully responsible for the political conditions and consequences of the projects they accept; any position that would make them only an executant constitutes an insult to their function and their ability to act.

The National Museum of Qatar, designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, is being inaugurated on 28 March 2019 [...] Nouvel, who also designed the Louvre Abu Dhabi, drew inspiration from the crystalline forms that emerge in the desert as the basis for his design with curved discs, intersections and cantilevered angles.

The architect behind 53 West 53rd wanted the tower to be synonymous with New York City, to be a building that couldn’t easily be slipped into another skyline. “A worldwide catastrophe today is the number of buildings that are parachuted because they were preconceived. Offices, housing, shopping malls all look the same,” Jean Nouvel told The Real Deal, translated from French.

Back in January, the Jean Nouvel-designed MoMA tower was on the heels of reaching its full 82-story height and now, that milestone has been accomplished. Last week, the long-awaited supertall, named 53W53, topped out and it now stands at 1,050 feet tall, tying with the New York Times building and the Chrysler Building as the city’s sixth tallest building.

Jean Nouvel's ultra-luxurious MoMA tower 53W53 is now topped out to its full height at 1,050 feet. Once completed, the tower will include 145 residential units designed by Thierry Despont, amenities, and new MoMA galleries and a restaurant that are expected to open in 2019. Starchitecture is out of fashion these days, but it can still produce visual wonders. The look of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel, might be described as Arabic-galactic. In the form of an immense, filigreed gray half-sphere resting on a low base infiltrated by water channels, it could pass as a spaceship, an unfinished mosque or a Venetian pavilion set on the edge of the Persian Gulf.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has finally opened its doors a decade after the agreement between the French and Emirati governments was signed to establish the mega-museum on Saadiyat Island. [...] An underwhelming entrance via a nondescript car park might be improved in years to come by an adjoining garden. “It should appear in a few years,” Nouvel said, adding that this was dependent on funding.

Jean Nouvel rejects accusations of exploitation at Louvre Abu Dhabi

The French architect Jean Nouvel has defended his Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi, a massive domed complex that opens in November, from accusations it was built by exploited and abused migrant workers. [...] In an interview as the finishing touches are put to the colossal construction, the architect dismissed accusations over exploited workers as an “old question” and insisted conditions for those building the museum were better than for some employed in Europe.

"A 2015 a Human Rights Watch report," The Guardian explains, "suggested migrants working on the Louvre museum and neighbouring Guggenheim, part of a £18bn 'cultural hub' on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, were subjected to conditions amounting to forced labour including summary arrest and deportation if they complained."

Nouvel insists on having inspected the workers living quarters at the beginning of the project, resulting in no concerns: "We saw no problem."

As the brand-new rendering above shows, the luxury condo tower designed by Jean Nouvel will boast an unusual amenity: floors 2, 4 and 5 of 53W53 will serve as new gallery levels for the Museum of Modern Art when construction is completed. Additionally, according to a fact sheet, "benefactor W53 MoMA membership runs with each residence, and includes curated benefits and the potential for the building to host private events in the museum's sculpture garden." The tower, which is slated to top out at 1,050 feet, will be home to 145 residences ranging in size from one to five bedrooms, with a few private-elevator-accessible penthouse suites.

Mr Pouille posted pictures of the museum's exterior, including its 7,000-tonne dome, which shelters many of the museum's gallery spaces while creating a microclimate for its internal plaza areas. They also show the Louvre Abu Dhabi's concrete beach, whose steps have been designed to act as an amphitheater-like public gathering space and viewing platform, just opposite the main museum complex.

Ludovic Pouille, the social media-savvy French ambassador to the UAE, has posted photos from his recent visit of Jean Nouvel-designed Louvre Abu Dhabi on Twitter.

The opening of the museum is projected to take place later this year.

Jean Nouvel's prefab 'Simple' home can be reconfigured from the inside out

The modular, prefab 'Simple' house took only two days to build, and is now installed in Paris' Tuileries Garden, part of the FIAC art fair. Nouvel affectionately referred to Simple as "a mobile home that stays still," describing the moveable windows and partitions within the structure.

Produced with Revolution Precrafted, a prefab company producing "limited-edition" properties, the structure is made of lightweight aluminum exterior panels, with wood and foam interior lining. "All of the essential notions relating to housing must be condensed into a single object that can be built very quickly and inhabited by one, two, three or four people within the same volume," said Jean Nouvel of the home.

Ranging in designs from 40-160-square-meters, versions of the Simple house are available to purchase from Revolution, but for now the home will exist simply as a pavilion on the Tuileries grounds until October 28.

A new documentary follows Jean Nouvel as he traverses the globe

“Every project is an adventure, is a passion,” states Jean Nouvel in a new documentary that follows the Pritzker Prize-winning architect as he travels around the world. The fifteen-minute film, titled Jean Nouvel: Reflections, includes reflections by Nouvel on the major achievements of his career, from the Institut du Monde Arabe to the Doha Tower.

With stylish cinematography and editing, the documentary begins with a meditation on the early influences of Nouvel’s work, notably the events of Paris in May 1968. It shows the architect sketching out his designs and working on site.

Jean Nouvel's museum extension plans narrowly rejected in Geneva

The people of Geneva have narrowly rejected a controversial plan to extend and renovate the city’s Musée d’Art et d’Histoire by the French architect Jean Nouvel. The “non” camp won the public vote on 28 February with 54%. Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Paris designed the planned extension, which was approved by Geneva’s municipal council last May, in collaboration with the local firms Architectures Jucker and DVK Architectes.[...] The council must now launch a new competition for the museum.

Jean Nouvel loses court case over 'sabotaged' Philharmonie de Paris

Jean Nouvel, the famed French architect, on Thursday lost a court battle against a £280 million Paris concert hall he designed but whose architecture he claimed had been "martyred" and "sabotaged". Mr Nouvel boycotted the January opening of the Philharmonie de Paris, an ultra-modern building in the French capital's eastern Parc de La Vilette, accusing project managers of cutting corners to save money during its completion.

Jean Nouvel applied for a court mandate ordering that his name and image be completely removed from all references to the "sabotaged" Philharmonie de Paris at the Parc de La Vilette. Nouvel boycotted the grand opening of the unfinished 2,400-seat concert venue in January. In a column for Le Monde, Nouvel claimed he was used as a scapegoat for cost overruns and delays and he also wrote about how the venue's premature opening didn't "allow [the] architectural and technical requirements to be respected" (English translation here).

According to recent reports, Nouvel's lawyers state that the architect is not seeking compensation but for modifications to remedy 26 parts of the building that did not comply to his original design. This includes the promenade, foyers, parapets, facades, and acoustic elements of the approximately $427.4 million (£280 million) project.

The court hearing is currently scheduled for April 16.
