At age 79, architect Liu Thai Ker is leaving RSP to start his own firm

The new practice, Morrow, is named after the studio [Liu Thai Ker's] father, the pioneer artist Liu Kang, ran in the 1940s and 1950s. And though he joked that he was probably "the oldest man to start a company", Dr Liu stressed that he has no plans to retire soon and intends to work for as long as he can.

Age is just a number! Dubbed the “architect of modern Singapore”, 79-year-old Liu Thai Ker is leaving his Director position at RSP Architects Planners & Engineers to start his own practice, Morrow, which will open December 1.

Leading 40 employees (who are also coming from RSP), Liu Thai Ker “hopes his firm can help other cities to produce better plans, and also ‘architecture design that is not a direct copy of Western magazines’”, The Straits Times writes.

Announcing the 2017 winners of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers!

Six talented winners were revealed today for the 2017 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. Established in 1981 by the Architectural League of New York, the Prize carries a legacy in that many now-well-known architects received the award at the start of their careers, like Steven Holl, Billie Tsien, Stan Allen, Shih-Fu Peng & Roisin Heneghan, J. Meejin Yoon, James Slade & Minsuk Cho, and several more.

Open to North America-based designers who are no more than 10 years out of school, the juried portfolio competition had “Support” as its 2017 theme. Support “identified a present situation in which precarious forms and precarious social arrangements exist side by side. How does one clarify the modes of support in architecture today when the discipline’s role is obscured by a tangled network in which exchanges between built form and various systems of framing, assistance, and reinforcement are constantly in flux?”

Winners of New Practices New York 2016 announced

Judged by a five-member jury including Architect's Newspaper editor-in-chief William Menking and Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MOMA Martino Stierli, the 2016 New Practices New York winners are MODU, SCHAUM/SHIEH, stpmj, Studio Cadena, Taller KEN, and the suitably-named Young Projects. Some of the award-wining work includes a "sliding screen partition made from folded, polished stainless steel" by Young Projects in Tribeca:

stpmj garnered the award by submitting their Shear House project, an environmentally sensitive house sited in Yecheon, Korea:

Meanwhile, Taller KEN used an inventive moulded fiberglass element for their Zona 14 House in Guatemala City:

An analysis of donut-shaped buildings in modern work culture

That’s not to say that all circular buildings represent some emergent 21st-century order. It is interesting, though, that past precedents have usually been buildings designed for spectatorship: sports stadiums or, more resonantly, panopticon prisons, where inmates’ cells are arranged in a ring so they’re visible to guards in a central observation tower. Take away that tower and you have the Apple campus.

Circles are an emerging form of office buildings (e.g. Apple HQ, Zappos, Government Communications HQ) and organizing people (Holacracy), as they convey positive qualities like transparency and open collaboration. But, as one New Zealand artist warns in his work, what sinister undertones linger within these structural concepts?

Six winners for the 2014 New Practices New York competition

The AIANY New Practices Committee officially announced the winners of the 2014 New Practices New York competition at the Center for Architecture in New York this week. The portfolio competition acknowledges young architecture and design firms and promotes their innovative work. Qualified firms had to be founded no earlier than 2004 and be based in New York City's five boroughs.

Out of 64 entries, the jury selected six winners:

AIANY Selects Seven Firms for New Practices New York 2012

The AIA New York Chapter recently announced seven promising and pioneering new architecture and design firms from the New York area to receive the New Practices New York 2012 awards.
