The Architectural League of New York announces the 2022 Emerging Voices

The Architectural League of New York has named its annual group of Emerging Voices. The competition is one of the most coveted and unique in the field of architecture and design, recognizing work that constitutes the vanguard of young professionals based in North America.

Every year since 1982, the organization has selected eight emerging practices based on a competitive portfolio competition. Past winners have included luminaries like Steven Holl, Enrique Norten, and Tatiana Bilbao. Each Voice is said to represent the future of architectural practice as seen in their designs’ potential to address large-scale issues and cast influence across multiple architectural disciplines. The jury reviews only realized work on an invite-only basis.

The Architectural League of New York's Emerging Voices awards highlights the work of emerging practices through its portfolio competition. Since 1982, the awards have helped launch the careers of more than 200 North America-based architects. Past winners include Toshiko Mori, Tatiana Bilbao, Enrique Norten, Casper Mork-Ulnes, Miriam Peterson, Nathan Rich, Olalekan Jeyifous, Mimi Hoang, Rosalyn Shieh, and many others.

The invite-only, two-stage review from approximately 50 entrants brings together these best of the best in design. "The award spotlights individuals and firms based in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with distinct design voices and the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism. The jury reviews significant bodies of realized work and considers accomplishments within the design and academic communities as well as the public realm."

Being named an Emerging Voice is considered a big honor. Since 1982, The Architectural League of New York's reputable portfolio competition has helped launch the careers of over 250 North America-based architects, many whose names are now well known, like Steven Holl, Morphosis, Toshiko Mori, Deborah Berke, Jeanne Gang, Tatiana Bilbao, Enrique Norten, Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, and many more.

The two-stage, invite-only competition distinguishes eight mid-career practices and individuals who not only have distinct design voices, but also demonstrate strong potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism.

Receiving submissions from approximately 50 firms, the jury reviewed significant bodies of built work, how the work addresses issues in the built environment and landscape, and accomplishments within design, academia, and the public realm. The 2020 Emerging Voices are:

Duvall Decker Architects combine greater agency and public outreach to benefit Mississippi (and the profession at large)

Since they founded Duvall Decker nearly 20 years ago, the Deckers, as they’re known, have focused mostly on neglected corners in and around Jackson, Mississippi’s capital. To pay the bills, the two have redefined for themselves the ambit of a small architectural practice. They have become developers and even branched into building maintenance: a soup-to-nuts strategy that has allowed them more than just financial breathing room.

Helping impoverished Mississippi communities? Check. Making money while creating a business model that empowers you with the decision-making powers of developers? Check. Being notable and effective enough to earn your own profile in The New York Times by Michael Kimmelman? Done, done, and done for Duvall Decker Architects, which also was named one of 2017's Emerging Voices by the Architectural League of New York. What's especially enheartening about this profile is how by virtue of increasing the quality of their own professional lives, the architects have also vastly increased the well-being of their community.

Aranda\Lasch and CC ARQUITECTOS give first Emerging Voices lecture of 2015

Last Thursday, the Architectural League of New York launched its 2015 Emerging Voices lecture series with firms Aranda\Lasch and MANUEL CERVANTES CESPEDES / CC ARQUITECTOS. Architects Benjamin Aranda, Chris Lasch and Manuel Cervantes Cespedes presented a survey of their work, ranging through a wide array of scales and site locations.

All three architects grounded their work in an extensive description of their process and research methodologies that influence the forms and logic of their individual projects. Both firms seem to have rooted their work in interdisciplinary explorations, adding diversity to their architectural approach.

Lasch framed the firm’s work: “It is about patterns, math and science, but its also about history – there seems to be an obsession about historical objects.” The firm’s projects each have a historical lineage, particularly a grotto they designed using only four modular boulders, inspired by the typology of the Romantic grotto. If you're in Atlanta in the next few weeks, make sure to see Joseph Choma's solo-exhibition, Object to Atmosphere, as part of the Young Architects Forum Atlanta Emerging Voices 13 exhibition. Choma is this year's recipient of the AIA Atlanta 2013 Emerging Voices Citation for his research and experimentation in architecture.

Emerging Voices 13 will also feature a composition of the YAF Atlanta 48HRS Design Competition entries and winners.
