Barozzi Veiga-designed Oolite Arts complex hopes to become a new hub for Miami's growing artistic community

Two years after beating out more than 100 different international firms and being named to its commission, Barcelona’s Estudio Barozzi Veiga has finally unveiled renderings of its new “signature building” for the nonprofit Oolite Arts in Miami.

The museum and educational center will offer space for artists and the community to enhance each other through an exchange created by the addition of the new village-like cultural hub, acting as an anchor to the increasingly trendy Little River Art District.

The updated design appears to show an open-ended scheme with plenty of trees and other greenery dotting an oasis-like internal courtyard. Interior space is organized into repeated vertical elements with an influx of natural light providing framing for its office and exhibition spaces, two classrooms, a theater, and the 21 free studios promised as part of Oolite’s storied artist-in-residency program.

Howard University's Bradford Grant named Instagram artist-in-residence at National Portrait Gallery

Architect and educator Bradford C. Grant has been named as the inaugural Instagram artist-in-residence by Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Grant, who is a professor in the Department of Architecture at the Howard University College of Engineering and Architecture, will "provide engaging insight into the museum’s programs and its community through his sketch work and made-from-life drawings," according to the university's website. Grant's work will be shown via the gallery's Instagram account, @smithsoniannpg, throughout his residency, which will last through the Fall 2020 semester.

An artist-in-residency is stranded aboard a bankrupt freighter off the coast of Japan

Part of the 23 Days at Sea residency, British video and performance artist Rebecca Moss left Vancouver on August 23 in a Hanjin freighter, expecting to dock in Shanghai on September 15. Run by Vancouver's Access Gallery, the residency focuses on issues of globalization, but what ended up happening during Moss's residency, while on-theme, wasn't exactly its goal.

On August 31, with debts amounting to $900 million, Hanjin Shipping Company filed for bankruptcy. Now placed in a receivership, meaning "in the custodial responsibility for the property of others, including tangible and intangible assets and rights", Hanjin was refused entry by Shanghai. It's now stuck in aquatic limbo off the coast of Japan, looking for a place that will allow it to dock. The shipping company is the seventh-largest in the world, accounting for 7% of container trade between North America and East Asia.
