Anchor House has ample space for their transition with 772 beds at 450,650 square feet. Its construction was funded entirely through the Helen Diller Family Foundation, helping the university towards its 9,000-bed goal to end a housing crisis that has <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150279794/uc-berkeley-revises-proposed-people-s-park-housing-scheme-as-chancellor-promises-to-accommodate-its-unhoused-population" target="_blank">persisted</a> for almost a decade.</p>

He will be remembered for his experimental teaching methods and approach to designing buildings as ecological systems, both of which later became widely accepted as either field looked to embrace sustainability as its new baseline standard. </p>
<p>Van der Ryn's <a href="https://ced.berkeley.edu/news/sim-van-der-ryn-pioneer-of-ecological-design-passes-away-at-89" target="_blank">memorial page</a> on the CED's website also credits his work with Murray Silverstein as leading the way for post-occupancy user studies. Dean Renee Y. Chow added her own context to his legacy at the school, saying: "Sim was one of the people who laid the foundation for CED’s ongoing commitment to resilience and environmental equity. The 116-year-old home owned by architect Claude Stoller until his death last year in Berkeley is just steps from <a href="https://archinect.com/UCBerkeley" target="_blank">UC Berkeley</a>’s campus and includes four bedrooms and 3.5 baths in a 2,555-square-foot envelope.</p>
<p>The listing is for $1.9 million. According to SFGate.com, which <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/realestate/article/first-home-designed-famous-bay-area-architect-sale-19797549.php" target="_blank">first reported</a> the news last week, "The property is also a mix of Morgan’s original vision and contemporary amenities: The 4,182-square-foot lot hosts the home as well as an outbuilding — itself a diminutive replica of the main house — currently used as a studio, and a redwood board and batten garage with a 220-volt power outlet. Established maple and redwood trees as well as a vine-covered pergola put the finishing touches on this historic landscape."</p>

<p>The bill <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-09-11/california-housing-construction-crisis-shortage-affordable-yimby-scott-wiener" target="_blank">passed the state senate</a> along with the related SB 423 on Monday. If signed into law, it would streamline the process by which churches and other nonprofit organizations can enact housing at sites that previously had been limited by local land use restrictions and the California Environmental Quality Act (or CEQA).</p>

<p>Current Professor of Architecture Lisa Iwamoto was appointed Chair of the department effective December 1st by the CED’s acting Dean Renee Chow.</p>
<p>Iwamoto has been on the faculty at Berkeley for the past two decades and is also a founding partner of the San Francisco-based practice <a href="https://archinect.com/iwamotoscott" target="_blank">IwamotoScott Architecture</a>, which has won multiple national awards since its founding in 2002.</p>
<p>“I am pleased to appoint Lisa as the next chair of the department. She has dedicated her career to balancing practice with academia and enters the position with a well-rounded approach to architectural education that can meet the contemporary environmental challenges and opportunities we face,” Chow said in a statement.</p>

<p>Chakrabarti <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150143568/pau-s-vishaan-chakrabarti-to-lead-uc-berkeley-college-of-environmental-design" target="_blank">ascended to the position</a> in 2019 after a successful career in New York, where he quickly established his firm <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/149950367/pau" target="_blank">PAU</a> as an industry leader in sustainable design. </p>
<p>The 55-year-old left said he Berkeley with a “new foundation from which to build” and departs in the midst of a tenure in which CED underwent a tremendous amount of change and restructuring. </p>
<p>A university statement cited Chakrabarti’s “enormous mark on the college over the past year, even in the midst of a global pandemic” and praised the architect for his leadership commitment to social justice issues.</p>

So did the blue carpet in my childhood bedroom enmesh gender between my toes? And if we alter texture — including how we talk about it — might we transform gender in both minute and brash ways?</p></em><br /><br /><p>Whether or not they realize it, architecture critics generally build a body into their writings. And we must allow ourselves, and others, to write bodies other than cis, straight, white, able ones into the affect of our analyses. Changing words — say, crafting new architectural metaphors for trans and queer embodiments — can alter our perceptions of bodies and buildings alike. </p>
<p>Lucas Crawford, the latest recipient of the <a href="https://placesjournal.org/series/gender-sexuality-environment/" target="_blank">Arcus/Places Prize</a> for innovative public scholarship on gender, sexuality, and the built environment, explores how the language of architectural criticism influences the ways that we discuss the design of built space.</p>

The Housing Lab will advise promising ventures while they evolve their business models and connect them with the industry leaders and capital to achieve greater scale.</p></em><br /><br /><p>In <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/615/california" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">California</a>, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/27/opinion/california-housing.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">collapse</a> of proposed statewide <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/27/opinion/california-housing.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">legislation</a> that would have eliminated single-family zoning and could have boosted density along transit corridors has left housing activists scrambling.</p>
<p>While state legislators regroup to tackle the structural issues, like zoning, underpinning California's <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/322270/housing-crisis" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">housing crisis</a>, the Terner Center for Housing Innovation is putting its money on...well, money. This week, The Terner Center, a partnership between the<strong></strong><strong> <strong></strong></strong>College of Environmental Design and the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, <a href="https://archinect.com/UCBerkeley" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Berkeley</a>, unveiled the nation's first housing innovation startup lab focused on lowering the cost of housing. The group has partnered with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and is currently accepting applications from existing housing innovation ventures that are ready to be incubated to success.</p>

They examined the city from 1990 to 2000 and up to 2015, focusing on neighborhoods near transit stops. The goal was to see if these areas saw higher rents and more displacement than other areas.
The answer? Yes — with some exceptions.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Some of the UCLA researchers' key findings for Los Angeles Country (via the project's website, urbandisplacement.org):</p><ul><li><em>Our analysis found that areas around transit stations are changing and that many of the changes are in direction of neighborhood upscaling and gentrification.</em></li><li><em>Examining the changes from 2000 to 2013, we find that relative to non-transit areas, transit neighborhoods are more associated with higher increases in whites, college educated, higher income households and greater increases in the cost of rent. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/p6/p6uf79fz3htkl2be.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>Sheila Kennedy — a principal of <a href="http://archinect.com/firms/cover/101016801/kva-matx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">KVA MATx</a> and the first woman to hold the title of Professor of the Practice of Architecture at <a href="http://archinect.com/schools/cover/342/massachusetts-institute-of-technology-mit" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MIT’s School of Architecture & Planning</a> — was announced today as the 2014 recipient of the Berkeley-Rupp Prize.</p><p>Awarded every two years by the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design (CED), the $100,000 Berkeley-Rupp Prize is given to a distinguished design practitioner or academic who has made significant contribution to advance gender equity in the field of architecture, and whose work exhibits commitment to sustainability and community. The prize consists of a semester-long professorship, a public lecture, and a gallery exhibition at the CED. Deborah Berke of Deborah Berke Partners received the inaugural Berkeley-Rupp Prize in 2012.</p><p>Kennedy is scheduled to begin her residence in January 2015. “A couple of months ago I started fooling around with Legos and I made a couple of mock-ups of the Campanile,” he recalls. “I knew that Lego has a suggestion site—if you submit a proposal and it gets 10,000 votes, they’ll consider making a kit. The 2014 challenge revolved around the topic: 'The Architect and the Healthful Environment.' 141 undergraduate architecture students from 28 countries responded to this year’s call to describe examples of healthful and unhealthful environments in their respective cities and to compare them analytically.</p></em><br /><br /><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd">
