Landscape Architect Kate Orff named 2023 TIME 100 Influential People honoree

Historically, landscape architecture was concerned with the composition of private gardens, but Kate Orff is a landscape architect who’s never been hemmed in by garden walls—seeking instead to liberate landscape to do nothing less than repair our warming planet through design.

The SCAPE founder and Columbia GSAPP Urban Design Program Director joins an exclusive club of TIME Magazine’s ‘100 Influential People’ that includes David Adjaye, Bjarke Ingels, Wang Shu, Jeanne Gang, and Kengo Kuma. (HOK was also cited last year for the Terminal B project at LaGuardia Airport, which the magazine said sets “the gold standard for airport design.”)

Orff was previously included on Rolling Stone's list of “25 People Shaping the Future in Tech, Science, Medicine, Activism and More” in 2017, the same year she was awarded the MacArthur "Genius" Grant fellowship in a first for landscape architects nationwide.

David Adjaye and HOK are both named as TIME100 honorees

David Adjaye has been given a TIME100 Impact Award, and HOK has made the magazine’s list of the 100 most influential companies as part of the annual designation released this week. The two are the sole representatives of the architectural industry on a pair of lists that includes multiple online retailers, tech company leaders, houses of finance, and engineering concerns.

TIME singled out HOK’s design for the new Terminal B at New York's LaGuardia Airport, saying it now constitutes “the gold standard for airport design moving forward.”

The magazine also selected Adjaye as one of its 2022 Impact Award recipients for his innovative work across multiple typologies.

Kengo Kuma has been named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People

Kengo Kuma champions an ideal of “losing architecture”—intricate buildings that disappear into their environs—although it’s hard to miss the new National Stadium … His stylistic fingerprints can be seen throughout the elaborate project … Greenery dots the facade of the oval-shaped structure, the centerpiece of this year’s Games, allowing a series of wooden eaves—a favored material for Kuma, procured from prefectures across Japan—to better blend in with the surrounding garden.

Kengo Kuma’s design for the Japan National Stadium served as the centerpiece for this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games. Kuma also recently announced museum projects with literary tie-ins in Denmark and Norway and has been able to add sneaker collaborations and homeware to his portfolio successfully.

The 67-year-old Yokohama native joins Jeanne Gang, David Adjaye, and Bjarke Ingels as architects to be named to the prestigious list in the past five years.

Referring to the growing socioeconomic divides in our cities, Jeanne has warned her profession against “sorting ourselves into architects of the rich and architects of the poor,” and focuses instead on discovering “new possibilities for the discipline and beyond.”

From her iconic Aqua Tower in Chicago to closing the pay gap at her practice, Jeanne Gang continues to make waves in the architecture profession. This week, Gang was the sole architect to be included in the 2019 ‘TIME 100’ list, which recognizes the world's most influential individuals for their activism, innovation, and achievement.

“For Jeanne, architecture is not just a wondrous object. It’s a catalyst for change,” wrote actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith in her TIME citation on Gang.

In recent years, Gang was named a 2018 RIBA International Fellow, has received the 2017 Marcus Prize for Architecture, and was the 2016 Architect of the Year in the Women in Architecture Awards, among other accolades. A few of Gang's upcoming projects include the University of Chicago Center in Paris — her first project in France — and the $8.5 billion expansion program for Chicago's O’Hare International Airport.

TIME Magazine has revealed 100 destinations for their first annual list of the World's Greatest Places. Included in the lineup are a range of museums, parks, hotels, and restaurants that they believe are breaking new ground and offering truly extraordinary experiences.

Among the selected are a host of architectural gems designed by some of the profession's most notable stars. One of the entries on the list is Herzog and de Meuron's Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, praised by the magazine for its show-stealing acoustics. Another is one of Los Angeles's hottest new restaurants, Vespertine. Designed by Eric Owen Moss, the magazine noted not only the restaurant's unusual dining experience, but also its unique architecture, describing the space as a "cross between a spaceship and a waffle."

David Adjaye named one of Time's "100 Most Influential People"

Every architect has to contend with gravity—but when David designed the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the challenges of that elemental force went far beyond the ordinary. How can a design acknowledge, and embody, the weight of this monumental history and yet transcend it right before your eyes?

It feels like this is going to be yet another great year for David Adjaye. The architect, who back in January became Sir David Adjaye after receiving the Knights Bachelor award from the Queen of England, is the only architect on this year's "100 Most Influential People" list (a distinction previously held by Bjarke Ingels in 2016).

Contrary to many, maybe including himself, I do not consider Bjarke Ingels the reincarnation of this or that architect from the past. On the contrary, he is the embodiment of a fully fledged new typology, which responds perfectly to the current zeitgeist. Bjarke is the first major architect who disconnected the profession completely from angst. He threw out the ballast and soared.

"With that, he is completely in tune with the thinkers of Silicon Valley, who want to make the world a better place without the existential hand-wringing that previous generations felt was crucial to earn utopianist credibility," writes Rem Koolhaas for TIME's 2016 list of the "100 Most Influential People".

"We are friends," Koolhaas continues. "Once, during lunchtime, I used his office to prepare a competition presentation. (We lost.) On the menu that day was quiche. Wow, I wondered, so you can do great architecture without violating anyone’s comfort zone?"

Ingels once worked for Koolhaas at OMA before starting BIG. Since then, they've competed against each other for commissions. Ingels once described their dynamic as "oedipal" in regards to a competition for a project in Miami.
