<p>While the NFT bubble has burst, the tantalizing potential of blockchain, which is the foundation of NFT’s, bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies, endures. Some have even written that blockchain offers the “<a href="https://archinect.com/features/article/142920059/towards-a-decentralized-architecture-with-foam-the-blockchain" target="_blank">possibility of entirely reorganizing the profession</a>” of architecture.</p>
<p>Harvard University Graduate School of Design Executive Education offers <a href="https://bit.ly/gsdblockchain" target="_blank">From Crypto to the Metaverse: Blockchain Applications in Real Estate</a> to equip architects for this paradigm shift.</p>
<p><strong></strong>We asked Jose Luis Garcia del Castillo y Lopez, Lecturer in Architectural Technology at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, to introduce this January's program.</p>

<p>The museum <a href="http://press.moma.org/news/digital-art/" target="_blank">announced its acquisition</a> of Anadol’s 2022 Generative AI piece <em>Unsupervised – Machine Hallucinations,</em> along with the blockchain-based piece <em>3FACE. 2022</em> from artist Ian Cheng, this week. Anadol's work was a gift to the museum by the 1OF1 Collection (which is led by Ryan Zurrer) and the RFC Collection, which is led by Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile and Desiree Casoni.</p>

Titled <em>Ghost Forest Seedlings</em>, and produced by <a href="https://verso.pacegallery.com/project" target="_blank">Pace Verso</a> with Web3 art innovators E.A.T_WORKS, the work will be released on September 18 to align with Climate Week NYC.</p>
<p><em>Ghost Forest Seedlings</em> builds on <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150264314/maya-lin-s-ghost-forest-brings-the-climate-crisis-to-madison-square-park" target="_blank">Lin’s 2021 <em>Ghost Forest</em> installation</a>, which saw 50 Atlantic white cedar trees placed in Madison Square Park to highlight Earth's fragility amidst the climate crisis. The latest artworks, each priced at $1,000, depict a seed or group of seeds that grow into an intricate root pattern over a predetermined amount of time. Each of the 500 unique works from the project will include three components: a signed print of the final root system, a generative <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1732715/nft" target="_blank">NFT</a> that shows the seedling’s evolution in real-time, and a video timelapse tracing the seedling’s complete growth pattern.</p>

The legendary skateboarder this week announced plans to partner up with The Sandbox — an online game built on the ethereum blockchain where players can spend cryptocurrency to buy virtual land — to build the “largest virtual skatepark ever made,” the company said in a Wednesday press release.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Called <em>Tony Hawk LAND</em>, the virtual space is being developed through a partnership between Tony Hawk Inc. and The Sandbox. <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1732715/nft" target="_blank">NFT</a> production company Autograph will design purchasable avatars based on Hawk, along with his most iconic skateboards, equipment, and apparel, including a digital replica of the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/15910/skateboard" target="_blank">skateboard</a> he used at the X Games in 1999.</p>

<p>Located in Vanuatu, the 800-acre private island is named after Bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto and will be subdivided into seven separate “NFT zones” and 21,000 individual parcels that can be purchased exclusively as NFTs. The Satoshi Island development will feature a range of sustainability measures like solar panels and a specialized waste management system that combine with a goal of 100% self-generated power in a move away from the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/09/03/climate/bitcoin-carbon-footprint-electricity.html" target="_blank">energy-intensive</a> mining process involved in crypto.</p>

<p>According to the report, average rates per cubic pixel of digital lumber have increased by 73% since the beginning of the year, marking a three-fold price jump compared to the beginning of Q2 2021. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/f9/f9a9afd49b1092d1cc4a57d081d40827.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p><a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/680540/refik-anadol" target="_blank">Refik Anadol Studio</a> has announced details of their <em>Machine Hallucinations -Space: Metaverse</em> <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1732715/nft" target="_blank">NFT Collection</a>, which is set to be auctioned by <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/826980/sothebys" target="_blank">Sotheby’s</a> Hong Kong. To create the NFTs, Anadol has minted a machine’s memories and dreams of space onto the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/735337/blockchain" target="_blank">blockchain</a>, manifested through eight unique artworks. The works are set to become the first-ever examples of immersive digital experiences being converted into NFTs.</p>

Following their <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/digital-catalogues/machine-hallucinations-space-metaverse" target="_blank">online auction from Sotheby’s Hong Kong</a> from September 30th to October 4th, the works will be exhibited at the Digital Art Fair in Hong Kong from October 1st to 17th, 2021.

These props, in various stages of construction, share a fundamental quality of ephemerality and mobility, as if recalling their origins as a dream spawned on the internet.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The self-declared libertarian micronation of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/134106713/introducing-liberland-an-aspirational-libertarian-micro-nation-along-the-danube" target="_blank">Liberland</a> has vanished somewhat from the media's spotlight since its founder and current President, Vít Jedlička, planted the utopia's state flag on Gornja Siga, an unoccupied Danube island between Serbia and Croatia, in 2015. Liberland instantly found an early and vocal supporter in <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/221047/patrik-schumacher" target="_blank">Patrik Schumacher</a>, director of Zaha Hadid Architects and <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150064446/patrik-schumacher-calls-for-a-capitalist-revolution-to-fix-housing" target="_blank">outspoken evangelist</a> for free market capitalism, but what has really been happening since then? <br></p>
<p>Hans Larsson's recent <a href="http://volumeproject.org/liberland/" target="_blank"><em>Volume</em> piece</a> brings us up to speed and talks about the Schumacher-juried Liberland master plan design competition, decentralized autonomous blockchain governance, and neo-metabolist-inspired off-grid floating settlements.</p>
<p>"When seen from the right angle, the elements coalesce into an image of a new country being born," Larsson writes. "Shift your position slightly and you see a banal hoax. But if enough people buy into it, does this even matter?"<br></p>

Once deployed, a dozen lines of computer code can fulfill the same role as the county records office, the courts and the police. You can have “the function of a trusted bureaucracy without the expense of putting together a trusted bureaucracy”, Waldman explains.</p></em><br /><br /><p><em>The homeowner posts a price for the rental. The renter sends the money through her smartphone. Inside the front door is a very small computer connected to the internet. The computer knows when the renter is allowed to enter and unlocks the door for her when she pushes a button on her phone.</em></p><p>Smart contracts run on blockchain ledgers, the same technology that enables Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
