Interested in exploring a career in architecture and design but want to develop foundational skills and grow your design portfolio? Below are featured architecture summer programs from our Archinect Partner Schools that are still accepting applications!

These nine summer programs are offered for kids, high school students, recent high school graduates, and adults. The courses and workshops listed below offer participants, even those without prior design experience, access to the fundamentals of an architectural education. Our list also includes programs for those with existing backgrounds adjacent to architecture looking to explore specific topics with a design emphasis.

This summer, Pratt Institute's Immersion Studio welcomes students and professionals to explore a career in architecture! This architectural fundamentals course is taught by the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design faculty and is geared toward professionals and students interested in attending graduate architecture school.

Through a series of virtual studio sessions and lectures, the course introduces students to a series of design approaches to conceptualize architectural investigations using the most current techniques, including visualization.

Registration for SCI-Arc's landmark summer programs Making+Meaning (M+M), Design Immersion Days (DID), and Introduction to Digital Design (IDD) are open.

Open to creative individuals, inspired professionals, and current college students and graduates, Making+Meaning is a four-week career exploration and portfolio-building summer studio program that introduces students to architectural experimentation and transformative design techniques in a unique and lively studio setting.

Staffing shortages lead to a suspension of summer school activities at the Bartlett

Weeks after issuing a public apology related to an independent investigation into decades of misconduct by its faculty and staff, the Bartlett School of Architecture has announced the cancellation of its summer school program owing to last-minute staffing shortages.

The Architects’ Journal is reporting the decision to halt instruction for certain summer classes as it grapples with the fallout of the investigation, which this month led to the suspension of several individuals named in the investigation. UCL had promised more actions would quickly follow at the time.

A five-day course for students aged 16–18 was supposedly called off as full refunds have been issued to the students who enrolled prior to the July 4th start date. HomeGrown Plus, a nonprofit aimed at increasing diversity in the field of architecture, said it was disappointed by the news, which meant that its 10-student opportunity program would also have to be canceled.

The College of Environmental Design (CED) at UC Berkeley was the first college to combine architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning in one entity. This happened in the 1950s, and throughout the years, students have benefited from CED’s interdisciplinary approaches, as well as the strengths of the college’s individual departments alike. For example, CED has been consistently placed in the Top 10 QS ranking in the category Architecture & Built Environment.

In 2022, the CED Summer Programs are in their ninth year and continue to build their success upon the unique tradition and achievement of the college. Summer Program participants consistently give the programs and their instructors excellent reviews. Additionally, CED Summer Programs alumni have been admitted to graduate degree programs at Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, UCLA, Yale, and last but not least, UC Berkeley.

The Architecture Lobby launches a virtual summer program tackling capitalism, labor, and practice within architecture

Advocates of social and structural change within architecture and professional practice, the Architecture Lobby has announced the launch of a new online summer program that will address three themes: capitalism, labor, and collective practice.

The Architecture Beyond Capitalism (ABC School), invites students, faculty, practitioners, and members of various publics in all parts of the world to "interrogate the structures and systems of power." Starting on Saturday, June 19, 2021, each theme will be discussed and broken down into a 2-hr live session every Saturday for six weeks. The Architecture Lobby adds, "each theme has two components: debates stimulated by lessons from people whose work is central to the week's theme and salons for discussing the outcomes of design assignments pertinent to that theme."

KTGY's virtual summer internship cohort sets sail

The COVID-19 pandemic may have changed the nature of summer employment opportunities for architecture students and recent graduates, however firms are doing their best to adjust to these difficult circumstances and many architecture firms are doing what they can to follow suit.

This month, KTGY announced its summer Internship program cohort. With 16 students representing 11 different schools within the U.S., Tricia Esser, KTGY Architecture + Planning's CEO, shared on LinkedIn "Since KTGY was founded, our Summer Internship program has been a priority. It is an investment into the future of the industry and an opportunity to mentor the next generation as they build their careers."

The 6-week program will focus on aspects of design, studio life, and business practices, in addition to a design week challenge. The 16 student interns are:

Space Saloon and Designers on Holiday to take a "DeSaturated" look at water scarcity using desert-based design-build workshop

Looking for a unique design-build experience this summer? Well, you're in luck because non-profit design laboratory Space Saloon has announced its third annual design-build festival, DeSaturated. Created in collaboration with design studio and campsite residency group Designers on Holiday and rural resilience group Blue Sky Center, the eight-day design festival aims to bring a one-of-a-kind immersive experience that is open to all students and young design professionals within the disciplines of art, design, and architecture.

The festival invites individuals to experience a hands-on approach to architectural research, experimentation, and prototyping. Spanning over eight days in New Cayama, California, this year's design brief focuses on water scarcity.

A floating university by Berlin firm Raumlabor explores the future of architecture schooling

Created by architects Raumlabor, the Floating University in Berlin invites students and experts from all over the world to explore solutions for future urban challenges. It’s said that the things we learn at university today will be outdated by the time we graduate. So what does a learning environment look like where students research cities of the future?

Berlin-based firm Raumlabor have created a floating university running through the summer months to explore new learning environment possibilities. Located in a rainwater basin in Berlin, the temporary structure is under constant development with students, professors, and experts implementing their ideas.

The floating university includes a library, workspaces, an auditorium with a pool, an experimental kitchen and bar, and a water-filtering system. Students are invited from the fields of architecture, design, arts, and sustainable technology to participate in this hands-on program. The University will be dismantled in September with all materials either rented and returned or used for upcoming projects.

Entitled Rural Compression: Cosmic Dust, this year’s topic intersects architecture, the ecology of the Hudson Valley, and astronomy. Through studios and critiques with accomplished architects, residents will produce designs for a center for observational cosmology in the Hudson Valley.

5 residents will be selected for this year’s program. Past residents have ranged from undergraduates and graduate students from Harvard, Columbia, Pratt and Sci Arc, as well as practicing architects and young professionals.

Students branch out with algorithms and natural forms for AA Summer DLAB::WHITE

Resembling the surrounding tree trunks in London's Hooke Park forest, the Callipod installation was created by a group of 18 students who participated in the AA School of Architecture's Summer DLAB::WHITE at AA London and AA Hooke Parke for nearly three weeks last summer. Students in the yearly summer workshop explore algorithmic/generative design methodologies fused with large-scale digital fabrication tools that aim to enhance architectural design. Following the Summer DLAB's color-based agenda, WHITE focused on investigating organic formation processes and reinventing them through architectonic structures.

In the first phase of the workshop, students designed their own proposals that had to include an algorithmic process with a logical approach in the design in addition to illustrating how each concept will be fabricated at a certain scale.
