They house doctors&rsquo; offices and dry cleaners, furniture stores and accounting firms. Large shop windows separated by the thinnest possible aluminum strips offered passersby views of the library&rsquo;s bookshelves and clusters of comfortable reading chairs.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Sydney E.&nbsp;Martin's&nbsp;Mercantile Library was awarded the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/64991/aia-gold-medal" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">gold medal</a> in 1954 by the <a href="https://archinect.com/features/tag/815849/aia" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">American Institute of Architects (AIA)</a>. Inspired by modern retail buildings, Martin designed the library with a transparent glass facade to display the books as merchandise. This innovative design is hailed as one of the 1950's most daring <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/728541/modernist" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">modernist</a> buildings by historian&nbsp;Jeffrey L. Baumoel. The interior has been gutted and the roof has reportedly caved in. The building is now owned by&nbsp;Brickstone Realty, known for several historic renovations. She practiced in Chicago during Mies van der Rohe&rsquo;s prime and, from there, moved to Brazil, where a singular modernist language was being created for Brasilia, the most ambitious planned capital of the 20th century.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Georgia Louise Harris Brown has been featured as part of Redshift's <em>Respect</em> series, focusing on architect visionaries. Brown was the first <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/87779/african-american" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">African-American</a> <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/13720/women" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">women</a> to graduate with an architecture degree, and the second professionally licensed African-American female architect in the nation.&nbsp;Beverly Loraine Greene was the first, and a role model to Brown.&nbsp;</p> <p>She studied under Mies at his Illinois Institute of Technology and was heavily influenced by his <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/728541/modernist" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">modernist</a> style. Her first job in Chicago was with Kenneth Roderick O'Neal, an African-American architect and structural engineer who also studied with Mies.&nbsp;</p> <p>Working with&nbsp;Frank J. Kornacker Associates by 1949, Brown worked on several key projects such as&nbsp;860&ndash;880 Lake Shore Drive. Known for his theatrical lectures, Scully taught at <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yale</a> from 1947 to 1991 where his retirement only lasted a year. By popular demand he returned and taught until 2009, when health related issues caused him to cease lecturing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Scully promoted strong modernist opinions while also championing contextual and social awareness.
