Architect Stefano Boeri faces bid-rigging allegations in Milan’s BEIC design competition

Architect Stefano Boeri has responded to charges of alleged bid-rigging in relation to his role as the jury chair for a 2022 competition to design the new European Library of Information and Culture (BEIC) in Milan.

The 66-year-old Boeri told the Italian news agency ANSA this week, “I am calm and confirm my complete willingness to cooperate with the competent authorities to provide all the information in my possession in order to clarify a situation that I find unbelievable,” before saying he would not provide any further comments at this time.

The allegations were made public as news of an investigation on the part of local tax police broke earlier in the week. National Museums Liverpool re-tenders Slavery Museum design contract after Adjaye departure

National Museums Liverpool (NML) has issued a new tender for design contracts for the anticipated new Liverpool Slavery Museum a month after its original architect David Adjaye was formally removed from the project over sexual misconduct allegations that were first made public in June.

The announcement was picked up today by UK-based publications. NML says whoever is selected will shepherd the project from the RIBA Plan of Work scale's stage 3 (Spatial Coordination) to the completion stage 7 (Use) in coordination with community partners and the museum. The hope is for whoever takes over the project to complete the planned overhauls of Albert Dock's existing Hartley Pavilion and the Martin Luther King Jr. Building, which houses the new museum. Ralph Appelbaum Associates will remain on as the project’s exhibition designers as well.

Portland Museum of Art unveils competing conceptual designs for new $100 million expansion

Four finalist concept designs were just unveiled by the Portland Museum of Art for a planned expansion of the institution set to be completed by 2026 in the thriving New England cultural capital.

The $100 million project will add a total of 60,000 square feet of space to the existing museum in the form of a new six- or seven-story structure meant to accommodate the PMA’s collections, which have recently grown.

"Right now, because of our growth, the real risk is not to build," Director Mark Bessire explained. "If museums don’t continue to grow, if you fall back, it can take a generation to recover."

The project concludes the overhaul of Portland’s Congress Square district and will include restorations of some of its existing buildings, three of which are more than 100 years old, funded by a capital project that has already raised more than $30 million. AIA announces 2022 Film Challenge winners

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has just announced its 2022 AIA Film Challenge winners.

Grand Prize, Runner Up, and Third Place winners were selected from a field of 32 qualified entries for the competition, which awards short 1:30 to 3-minute documentary films that “demonstrate how architects work with residents and civic leaders to design sustainable and equitable communities.”

This year’s contest was judged by 2021–2022 NOMA president Jason Pugh, University of Illinois at Chicago professor and associate dean Stewart Hicks, and three others. A special People’s Choice winner was also selected via an online public vote. That honor went to a film from Boston-based Darguin Fortuna, who examined the restrictive barriers towards entering the architectural profession and the work Flow Design Inc. is doing to counteract the resulting homogeneity through education. Airbnb has named the 100 winners of its recently-launched OMG! Fund design contest celebrating the “craziest and most unique” buildings submitted to the short-term rental giant from more than 20 countries across the world.

2022 eVolo Skyscraper Competition winners use vertical architecture to combat climate change

eVolo Magazine has revealed the 2022 winners of their annual Skyscraper Competition. Chosen from a pool of 427 projects, the three winners and twenty honorable mentions offer visionary ideas for the future of vertical architecture, shaped by novel approaches to technology, materials, function, and aesthetics.

The top three projects were created by designers from South Korea, China, Austria, and Poland, with topics including the modification of weather conditions, the prevention of tsunamis in the Pacific, and the promotion of flora and microorganisms.

The Architectural League of New York has announced the winners of the 41st edition of its annual Prize for Young Architects + Designers portfolio competition. Each contestant is an early-career architect with no more than ten years out of a B.Arch or Master’s program. The 2022 winners now join a list of prestigious past awardees that includes names like Steven Holl and Meejin Yoon.

Oliver Wainwright considers the impacts of Belgium’s Open Call bidding system

Unlike the toxic culture of open international competitions, which see countless architects waste days of unpaid labour to compete in a beauty contest of novelty forms, the Open Call is focused – and paid. The democratic process has seen Pritzker prize winners drawn alongside recent graduates, unheard-of elsewhere. Unlikely as it may seem, the scheme has made this small part of northern Belgium home to some of the best new public buildings in the world.

The Guardian critic used Florian Heilmeyer’s new book, Celebrating Public Architecture: Buildings from the Open Call in Flanders 2000–2021, as a means of introduction to the system that was first enacted in 2000. Heilmeyer’s aim is to advance the notion that it “prove[s] that public architecture can actually be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time.” Wainwright thoroughly concurred with the assertion, adding his own opinion that a shift towards a more democratic process could benefit the health and safety of his own country.

The American Academy in Rome (AAR) has awarded the 2022–23 Rome Prize and Italian Fellowships to thirty-eight American and four Italian artists and scholars. Established in 1894, the AAR is the oldest overseas center for research and independent studies within the arts and humanities. One of South China’s most coveted vacation destinations is about to get a spur thanks to a new design from Büro Ole Scheeren.

Billed as an enhancement of the natural surroundings on Hainan Island, Sanya Horizons will stand 160 meters (525 feet) above the resort-dotted tropical coastline to offer itself as what the firm says is a “unique ecological leisure destination” on a massive 83,500-square-meter (898,786-square-foot) beachfront plot.

The project will combine two hotels — the Regent Sanya Bay and Hotel Indigo Sanya Bay — into one development, with each arranged in a stack that frees up much of the space surrounding the structure for an even more enhancing program of natural gardens and swimming areas. The combination of the massing also creates a unique and memorable curvilinear form that is both more structurally and ecologically efficient. Every second year the VELUX Group invites the students of architecture to participate in the International VELUX Award competition on the theme “Light of Tomorrow. Since the launch in 2004, more than 10,000 students from more than 800 schools from all regions of the world have participated in the competition.

The competition invites students to explore the role of daylight in architecture. The aim is to encourage and challenge students of architecture, and to create a deeper understanding of daylight as an ever-relevant source of energy, light, and life.

For the celebratory 10th edition in 2022, the students will develop their projects in one of the two categories: ‘Daylight in buildings’ or ‘Daylight investigations.’ In order to participate in the competition, students need to register until April 1, 2022. The USC Architectural Guild has announced the winners of the 11th annual Design Charrette.

Past challenges have addressed pressing issues such as homelessness, climate change, and the need for the city to rapidly adapt ahead of its bid as host of the 2028 Summer Olympics, among other themes. Each entry in this year’s Charrette had the unique opportunity to create an important piece of infrastructure which could serve as a weapon in the fight against one of the greatest public health challenges in the past century.

Responding to the 2022 theme of Catalytic Community Space, entries from fourth-year, fifth-year, and graduate students answered a two-fold challenge to design a pop-up Covid-19 testing site that can later be repurposed into a community-oriented amenity.
