Get Lectured: UCLA, Spring '24

Our semesterly Get Lectured rundown continues today with a look at the events and public programs on the campus of UCLA Architecture and Urban Design for the Spring academic term.

The events kicked off yesterday, January 10, with a special presentation from SO – IL’s co-founder Florian Idenburg. His in-depth talk about the firm’s work will be followed by another from MArch Class of 1981 graduate and Koning Eizenberg Architecture Founding Principal Julie Eizenberg on Monday, January 29.

The next month begins with Oana Stănescu's lecture on February 8, followed by Jeannette Kuo on February 21. Alums and BairBalliet Studio co-founders Kelly Bair and Kristy Balliet present their work next on February 29. Events continue into March with local favorite Michael Maltzan's appearance on March 4.

Dana Cuff will present the 135th UCLA Faculty Research Lecture on Thursday, March 7, in Schoenberg Hall, followed by the Ideas After IDEAS alumni conversation on April 19. Tatiana Bilbao presents th...

Our Get Lectured series offers a rundown of all the events and public lectures taking place at different schools of architecture in North America. Today, our tour continues with a look at what’s in store at the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Design for its Fall academic term.

This week began with an October 10 visit from Abalos+Sentkiewicz AS+ founders Iñaki Ábalos and Renata Sentkiewicz. They will be followed on October 18 by Portland-based designer Volkan Alkanoglu’s lecture "In Pursuit of Novel Form." Aleksandra Jaesch will follow Alkanoglu on October 25 with the lecture 'No Trespassing Beyond This Point.’

This year’s RIBA Royal Gold Medal winner Yasmeen Lari will speak on November 1, followed by the "Architecture After the New Green Deal" conference from November 3-4. Our infrastructure is aging, and as it does, we face dilemmas around what to do with it. Renovate? Replace? Eliminate?

Today, these age-old questions are complicated by the climate crisis: threats like rising, warming seas, and–evidenced vividly this summer–wildfires and extreme heat call for innovation in how we treat our aging buildings and cities. While architects mull these questions, they are also considering their field's contributions to the climate crisis–emissions and carbon footprints, material waste, and environmental displacement.

Dilemmas abound, but Julia Koerner sees immense opportunity around 3D printing at the scale of buildings and houses. Summer is here, and schools like UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Design are preparing for their Summer '23 lecture series. To accompany its AUD summer programming (JumpStart and TeenArch Summer Institute), UCLA's upcoming lecture series "offers programming and conversation that is simultaneously fundamental and complementary to [our] Summer Programs pedagogy."

Starting on July 7, a lecture between NMDA's Niel Denari and ALLTHATISSOLID's Max Kuo will take place. FormlessFinder's Garrett Ricciardi will give a lecture on July 10, followed by a lecture from UCLA AUD IDEAS Technology Studio lecturer Laure Michelon and David Freeland of FreelandBuck on July 14.

Natalie Alima of BIOLAB Studio will present a lecture on July 17, followed by a lecture from LA-based duo Sean Boyd and Mora Nabi of Nabi Boyd. Details: "Join A Rising Tide, and AAPI Design Alliance for an event during NYCxDESIGN to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islanders in design. Hosted by the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, this event, timed to coincide with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, will feature short presentations by emerging API design firms and a networking hour for interior designers, architects, makers, and landscape architects. Get Lectured: UCLA, Fall '22

UCLA School of Architecture announces its Fall '22 lecture series with an exciting lineup of guest speakers and public events.

Starting on October 3, the school welcomes LA-based architect Barbara Bestor, founder and principal of Bestor Architecture. Later that week, the school welcomes students, faculty, and visitors to its Decolonizing Regionalism Symposium on October 7. A book launch and panel discussion featuring Todd Gannon and his new book, Figments of the Architectural Imagination, will take place on October 17. Educator and designer Germane Barnes, founder and principal of Studio Barnes, will present a lecture on October 19.

In November, architect and author Enrique Walker will present a talk on November 7, followed by a lecture from Alper Derinboğaz, founder and Principal of Salon Alper Derinboğaz, on November 14. Natasha Sandmeier named new Executive Director of Los Angeles’ A+D Museum

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design adjunct Natasha Sandmeier has been named as the next Executive Director of the Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles (A+D), the institution announced on Monday.

In her new role, Sandmeier will work to “advance the next generation of museum programming and community building.” She has been serving in the position since June and replaces Anthony Morey, who stepped down in early 2021.

The A+D Museum is going through a transition from its longtime brick-and-mortar location downtown to a post-Covid virtual programming format for the time being. A press release mentioned Sandmeier is working closely with its Board and Managing Director Camille Elston on the search for a new physical home. For now, she is helping to maintain the A+D’s calendar of slated exhibitions for the rest of the year.

AIA|LA awards Gold Medal to Michael B. Lehrer

The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA|LA) has announced its 2020 AIA|LA Presidential Honorees, bestowing its prestigious 2020 AIA|LA Gold Medal on architect Michael B. Lehrer of Lehrer Architects.

The AIALA Gold Medal is the "highest honor the organization bestows on an individual" and was awarded this year to Lehrer, who, according to AIA|LA "embodies the high level of achievement loosely covering four areas that characterize this year’s AIALA Presidential Honorees class: design excellence, service to the region and country, the fostering of next generation designers, and support of the field."

Examining history and theory education at Los Angeles’s schools of architecture

Please join Archinect and the Architecture + Design Museum on Saturday, December 7th at 2pm for History + Theory Education in LA's Schools of Architecture, a panel discussion investigating the current and future state of historical and theoretical approaches to architectural education. The panel discussion is presented in conjunction with The Los Angeles Schools exhibition, for which Archinect is serving as media partner.

As climate collapse, equity-based social movements, and technological advances destabilize and recalibrate traditional architectural practice, how is architectural thinking coping?

Richard Weinstein, former UCLA architecture dean, dies at 85

Los Angeles, Richard S. Weinstein liked to say, “is full of holes.” He meant it as a compliment — at least to a degree. After working early in his career as an advisor on urban design to New York City Mayor John Lindsay, Weinstein, who died Feb. 24 in Santa Monica at 85, moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to become dean of the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA. After 10 years in that role, he spent another 13 as a professor in the department.

Christoper Hawthorne describes the supportive relationship Richard Weinstein had with another innovative L.A. architect at UCLA at the time, Thom Mayne, quoting him: “He [Weinstein] thought of architecture as a noble profession. Can you imagine?”

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design just revealed their lecture series for the 2017-18 school year, “THIS, NOT THAT”. The series brings together engaging speakers “to present arguments for their respective positions, or ideological stances, toward the design of the built environment. Their arguments will be supported by presentations of their creative efforts in research, pedagogy, or practice.” Sou Fujimoto will kick off the series on October 16.
