2022 eVolo Skyscraper Competition winners use vertical architecture to combat climate change

eVolo Magazine has revealed the 2022 winners of their annual Skyscraper Competition. Chosen from a pool of 427 projects, the three winners and twenty honorable mentions offer visionary ideas for the future of vertical architecture, shaped by novel approaches to technology, materials, function, and aesthetics.

The top three projects were created by designers from South Korea, China, Austria, and Poland, with topics including the modification of weather conditions, the prevention of tsunamis in the Pacific, and the promotion of flora and microorganisms.

Winners of the 2021 eVolo Skyscraper Competition envision the future of vertical architecture

It's that time of the year again: the Skyscraper Competition just revealed the winning design submissions from around the world. Hosted annually by eVolo Magazine, the contest calls for innovative tall-building concepts that challenge the way we understand vertical architecture.

From a pool of 492 entries this year, three winners and twenty honorable mentions were selected by the jury. The winning design teams from Ukraine, Israel, and China proposed genetically modified trees shaped into living skyscrapers, a rainwater-catching high-rise for Mexico City, and traditional wooden Hmong houses organized inside an adaptable stilt frame.

One of the most anticipated annual design challenges just revealed the top entries of this year's edition: 3 winners and 22 honorable mentions were selected from 473 submitted projects at the 2020 EVOLO Skyscraper Competition.

The winning teams from China, the United States, and Taiwan successfully challenged the established understanding of vertical architecture and proposed a rapid-deployment healthcare skyscraper for epidemic outbreaks, a vertical park for recreational activities within high-density urban areas, and a vertical housing community for fishermen in climate change-stricken St. Louis, Senegal.

eVolo Magazine has announced the winners of this year's Skyscraper Competition, which is one of the biggest and best known architectural ideas competitions out there.

The yearly contest invites entrants to submit their most creative skyscraper designs that rethink vertical architecture and its relationship to the built and natural environments.

This year, the jury selected three winners hailing from Serbia, Poland, and the United Kingdom, along with 27 honorable mentions. Among the 2019 winners are a vertical city-district in Belgrade that serves as landfill; another that cleans the air of heavily polluted areas; and a nature reserve skyscraper with research facilities.

From the creator of eVolo Magazine comes a brilliant redesign for the scale-ruler

The scale-ruler is as much a staple of architectural draftsmanship as the T-Square or vellum, and it potentially just got a significant redesign. Carlo Aiello, the founder of eVolo Magazine, recently published photos and a video of ESCALA, a 2-in-1 drawing tool combining the scale-ruler with an insertable fountain pen.

As of writing this article, 326 Kickstarter backers have invested $21,445 in the product, far exceeding its goal of $7,500.

eVolo Magazine has concluded another successful Skyscraper Competition for 2017, and Archinect and Bustler are thrilled to announce the winners! The sky is indeed the limit for this competition, which gives participants complete freedom in designing their skyscraper interpretations. At the same time, entrants are challenged to re-examine the skyscraper's definition, purpose, and the potential for vertical living in the 21st century. Since eVolo first launched the Skyscraper Competition in 2006, they have received over 6,000 projects from around the globe.

As expected, competition runs high every year. Out of 444 submissions this year, the jury chose three prize winners and 22 honorable mentions. The prize winners are:

“New York Horizon” would be virtually impossible to implement in the real world, given the actual urban landscape of the proposed site, which includes some of NYC's subway lines for starters. That being said, the criticism “New York Horizon” has sparked in recent weeks raises bigger questions — particularly involving the rise of “meme-tecture”, the cultural value of landscape architecture, and re-evaluating the setup of open ideas competitions.

Here comes the "dronescraper"

A drone skyscraper has been proposed by designers Hadeel Ayed Mohammed, Yifeng Zhao and Chengda Zhu that acts as a central control terminal for drones to dock and recharge, situated in the heart of Manhattan. The ‘dronescraper’, dubbed ‘the hive’ has been proposed as an alternative to Rafael Vinoy’s 432 Park Avenue superstructure, which is set to become the tallest residential tower in the western hemisphere.

Floating in mid-air, inspired by traditional designs, or built out of carbon dioxide, the sky is indeed the limit in the annual eVolo Skyscraper Competition. Since eVolo first launched the contest in 2006, there's no question that the 2016 edition will be just as competitive.

Every year, participants worldwide are invited to reinvent the skyscraper: examining its definition, historical context, purpose, and exploring the potential for vertical living in the 21st century. The fun part is that entrants are given complete freedom in designing their skyscrapers.

Get a headstart on those submissions! You can sign up for early registration now until November 17, 2015 for $95. Then from November 18 until January 19, the registration fee will hike up to $135.

The final registration deadline is January 19, 2016. Submissions are due on January 26, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern Time.

eVolo wants to know the endless ways that the skyscraper can be reimagined in their annual Skyscraper Competition. First launched in 2006, 2016 is expected to be another popular year attracting hundreds of submissions worldwide. Participants rethink the skyscraper by incorporating novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations. Additionally, they're strongly encouraged to consider globalization, adaptability, and the various issues of contemporary urban living in their designs.

The registration deadline is currently scheduled for January 19, 2016 and the submission deadline is January 26, 2016. This year's jury includes: Matias del Campo, Thom Faulders, Greg Lynn, Marcelo Spina, and Skylar Tibbits.

Behold the almighty skyscraper, both a historical architectural feat and a signifier of change -- whether in an idealistic sense or not -- in the urban landscape. In relation to that, eVolo Magazine hosted another year of their popular Skyscraper Competition, which gives participants worldwide the freedom to conjure up their own skyscrapers as a way to challenge how we understand vertical architecture and its relationship to the natural and built environment.

The winners for the 9th annual eVolo Skyscraper Competition have finally been revealed! The sky is indeed the limit for the popular worldwide competition, which gave participants complete freedom with their skyscraper designs. Imaginative ideas aside, entrants also had to examine the skyscraper's definition, purpose, and potential in the 21st century.

Out of 525 entries from 43 countries in all continents, the Jury awarded three winners and 20 Honorable Mentions.
