Archtober 2024: Check out these Buildings of the Day with architect-led tours in NYC next month

Archtober is back for its 13th edition in New York City. The month-long event, organized each year by the Center for Architecture in collaboration with partner organizations, includes the always-popular Building of the Day spotlight, offering architects a unique close-up inspection of superlative new projects in the region with tours led by architects and other design professionals.

Archtober, a New York City-based platform that promotes the discovery of architecture and design through experiences and content, will celebrate the next installment of its annual festival from October 1–31, 2024. In collaboration with over 100 partners and sponsors across the city, the 2024 festival will gather events, exhibitions, resources, and activities across the five boroughs to raise awareness of the importance of architecture and design in New York City.

In recent years, Archtober has continued to grow and deepen its impact with the addition of an annual festival theme, which we launched in 2023. Archtober 2023: NYC's Building of the Day series is back with architect-led tours

Archtober, New York City's annual month-long festival of Architecture and Design, is about to commence once again, featuring a packed calendar of exciting events and activities across the five boroughs.

Organized by the Center for Architecture in collaboration with a host of partners, Archtober is returning its popular Building of the Day initiative, which offers unique opportunities to explore nearly 30 outstanding buildings and sites through tours led by architects and other design professionals.

Archtober 2020: find all Buildings of the Day in one handy list

As September is wrapping up, we look forward to Archtober 2020 kicking off tomorrow. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the month-long celebration of architecture and design is presented as a hybrid virtual and in-person festival this year — allowing visitors to join events and activities online from a safe distance, or even from outside of New York City.

Returning once again is Archtober's popular Building of the Day series, pandemic-adjusted for 2020 and held in an accessible, virtual format. Tours or presentations will be held Mondays through Fridays at midday and, for the first time, also include architecturally significant sites outside of the New York area as part of Archtober's new Travel To series.

Explore Soviet architecture while dancing through Moscow

A new tour group fusing Soviet architecture with the latest Russian electronica is launching a series of outdoor parties amid the historic courtyards of central Moscow. Culture group MosKultProg will be holding two events in March, mixing historian Sergey Niktin's historical tour along Moscow's legendary Kutuzovsky Prospekt with sets from St Peterburg-based DJ Egor Holkin.

Moscow keeps expanding its options for exploring the city's mesmerizing architecture: if you've done the virtual/augmented reality tours of never-realized icons of Soviet architecture and already 'Pokémon Go-caught' all the famous figures of Russian history via the Know Moscow.Photo. app, you can now take an architectural walking dancing tour while grooving to epic DJ sets of Egor Holkin.

The organizers behind the concept, TanzProg, plan to bring their edutainment initiative also to other European cities this summer, including London and Paris.

The Moscow That Never Was: new VR/AR tour showcases unrealized icons of Soviet architecture

New virtual reality tours are giving Muscovites the chance to see the Russian capital as the socialist utopia envisioned by the city’s Soviet architects. The new project, The Moscow That Never Was, lets visitors glimpse shelved Soviet landmarks as they should have appeared on Moscow’s streets using VR goggles.

The 2-hour virtual/augmented reality tours through central Moscow feature utopian architectural projects that never quite saw the light of day, including the infamous Palace of the Soviets (imagined as the world's tallest building, crowned with a 300-ft Lenin statue), an alternate Lenin Mausoleum, Stalin's eighth 'sisters' skyscraper in Zarayadye Park, the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry HQ on Red Square, among others.

Tour Paris' Brutal landmarks with this new architectural guide

Paris is not only the City of Lights, but also one of the great repositories of Brutalist buildings. "Brutalist Paris Map," a new architectural guide book put together by photographer Nigel Crow and edited by Robin Wilson of the Bartlett, marks the sixth in a series of publications touring various architectural genres in different cites.

The book will point you to monuments such as Les Choux de Creteil, Les Orgues de Flandre Les Damiers, and Bourse by Travail among a slew of others.
