The Syracuse University School of Architecture has shared its public speaking information as part of our Get Lectured look at different events in store on campus for the Spring semester.

Oberlander Prize winner Julie Bargmann will visit campus on February 13 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series and be followed by an appearance from Rachely Rotem of MODU, who will deliver the L.C. Dillenback Lecture February 15. She is followed by a lecture from assistant professor Jess Myers on February 16. A workshop with UT Austin SoA Associate Dean Korey Bieg follows on February 22, and the next month begins with a visit from current Harvard Loeb Fellow Adi Kumar on March 1.

March continues with a special presentation on Chinese calligraphy with Shishu Su on March 22. His appearance precedes the The Landscape of Women’s Bodily Autonomy symposium on March 26. Get Lectured, Architect's ongoing highlight of public lectures and events happening at architecture schools across the country, continues with a look today at what’s happening at the Syracuse University School of Architecture this Fall.

The school’s sesquicentennial year begins with a discussion with the former and the incoming Harry der Boghosian Fellows Lily Chishan Wong and Christina Chi Zhang on September 12. Class of 1973 alum Patrick Ahearn returns to campus on September 19, followed by a September 21 presentation from Drawing Architecture Studio principals Li Han and Hu Yan detailing the studio “A Little Bit of Syracuse” they taught last spring to a group of ten students.

The month continues on September 28 with D. Christina Chi Zhang named Harry der Boghosian Fellow for 2023-24

Christina Chi Zhang has been named the Harry der Boghosian Fellow for 2023-24 by the Syracuse School of Architecture. Zhang, who is currently completing the final year of her master of architecture degree program at the Yale School of Architecture, will use the fellowship to explore the limits and implications of photography, cartography, drawing, and virtual reality.

During the 2023-24 academic year, Zhang will teach an architecture studio and two professional electives at the Syracuse School of Architecture. The studio and electives will center on her research project “Scales of Healing in Post-Traumatic Landscapes,” exploring the tools of representation used to document, analyze, and represent post-traumatic landscapes at different scales.

Syracuse University reappoints Michael A. Speaks for a second term as Dean of the School of Architecture

The Syracuse University School of Architecture has announced the reappointment of Dean Michael A. Speaks to another five-year term.

Speaks, at the helm since 2013, has been instrumental in establishing numerous academic and faculty-focused programs, including the Harry der Boghosian Endowed Fellowship Program for emerging academics in architecture.

The former Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Design also worked to establish the school’s China Studies program, which now has studios in Beijing and Shanghai, along with a host of academic exchanges and scholarship programs in South Korea and Taiwan respectively.

“With Michael’s deanship has come a new era of success for the School of Architecture,” Syracuse Provost Gretchen Ritter said of his tenure thus far. “He has extended the school’s reach and enhanced its already strong academic program. I know the school will continue to flourish with him at the helm, and I look forward to our continued work together.”

As the Spring term unfolds, Archinect is looking at all the exciting events at architecture schools nationwide with our Get Lectured series. Today we look at events and speakers coming to Syracuse University’s School of Architecture this semester beginning with South Korean critic Jooeun Sung, who visited campus on January 24 to speak about notions of empathy and values as they relate to architecture.

Desegregation activist and Biden Administration appointee Sara Bronin on January 26. Following Bronin’s visit precedes a guest lecture from historian and preservation specialist Jeffrey A. “Free” Harris on February 3, sponsored by the school’s National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) chapter. His appearance will be followed by an alumni panel discussion on February 10, and a presentation in New York City from Harvard GSD faculty member Ruo Jia on February 13.

Archinect continues its Get Lectured series by highlighting the Fall 2022 lectures and public events held by Syracuse University School of Architecture.

September 8 was the exhibition opening of 2021-22 Harry der Boghosian Fellow Leen Katrib. Caitlin Meives and Christopher Brandt presented the Francis E. Hares Preservation Lecture on September 13. New York-based author, editor, and columnist, Matt Shaw presented a lecture on September 15.

UC San Diego's Kelema Lee Moses, Ph.D. will present a lecture discussing urban island design and curatorial response on September 27. Soft Firm co-founder and D. Kenneth Sargent Visiting Critic Lexi Tsien will showcase projects and examples of collective/DIY building and their relationship to public space and the public realm on September 29. B.Arch alumni, Brad Rubin '05, presents "Non-Traditional Careers: A Journey from SU Architecture to Hollywood" on September 30.

Architect Lily Chishan Wong named 2022–23 Harry der Boghosian Fellow

The Harry der Boghosian Fellowship at Syracuse School of Architecture was created in honor of architecture alumnus Harry der Boghosian ’54 during the Spring of 2015. Since then, the program continues to provide emerging designers and academics "with the opportunity to collaborate on projects while developing a unique design research project that both advances their work and career and contributes to the intellectual and design life of the school. Each of the fellowships includes teaching related to the candidate’s area of interest and resources for the development of research and creative work."

For the 2022–23 iteration, Syracuse Architecture has announced Lily Chishan Wong as its newest fellow.

Wong received a BFA in Architectural Design from Parsons and a BA in Philosophy from Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School. She went on to receive her M.Arch from Columbia GSAPP, where she was the recipient of several accolades such as the Award for Excellence in Total Desig...

Syracuse University names Leen Katrib the 2021-22 Harry der Boghosian Fellow

Established in 2015, the Harry der Boghosian Fellowship is a one-of-a-kind program initiated by Syracuse University. The program provides emerging faculty members and designers early in their careers the opportunity to spend a year "developing a body of design research based on an area of interest while teaching at the School of Architecture."

Created in memory of Harry der Boghosian '54 by his sister Paula der Boghosian '64, this year's Fellow is architectural designer Leen Katrib. Born in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Katrib received her Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from the University of Southern California and earned her M.Arch from Princeton University. She has worked for architectural practices such as Marvel, LTL Architects (Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis), McEwen Studio, Peter Marino Architect, and OMA. It's safe to say that nobody knows what the future of architectural education will be. These days it's hard to know what next month will bring us. Few people would argue, however, that academia is ripe for change, as are many facets of modern life that have not evolved at the pace the world has changed in recent decades.

To address this necessary change, we invite you to join us for a special discussion this upcoming Monday, from 1-2 pm EST / 10-11 am PST, featuring a distinguished panel of leaders of architectural education. Deans from across the country will be addressing, head-on, the change they hope to see, and the challenges they currently face to make that change.

AIA Upjohn Research Initiative grant winners focus on NZE, performance, and life cycle assessment

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has chosen the winners of the latest round of AIA Upjohn Research Initiative grants.

The grants offer $15,000 to $30,000 in research support for "applied research projects that enhance the value of design and professional practice knowledge," according to the AIA website. This year's winners aim to tackle a variety of performance and sustainability-related topics, including Net Zero Energy (NZE) standards and building life cycle assessment metrics.

A research team headed by Nina M. Sharifi, PhD of Syracuse University and Gabrielle Brainard, AIA of Pratt Institute aims to develop research titled Envelope Retrofit Guide: Net Zero Energy Ready Strategies for Existing Buildings. This project, according to the researchers, "will produce an Envelope Retrofit Guide to assist architects in the early stages of net zero ready retrofit projects." Professor Kermit Lee Jr., Syracuse School of Architecture's first black graduate, honored in student organized exhibition

Kermit Lee Jr., died in 2018 and was the first Black graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture. In dedication, Syracuse’s National Organization of Minority Architecture Students chapter created an exhibit honoring his legacy and named it “The Living Room Conversation: In Memory of Professor Kermit J. Lee Jr.”

Curated by architecture students Benson Joseph and Parinda Pin Sangkaeo, The Living Room Conversation features Professor Lee's drawings from his time as a student and further chronicles his life and legacy. According to The Daily Orange, the exhibition was split into four parts, each a different season in Lee's life: student, teacher, architect, and person.

SHOP to design Syracuse University's National Veterans Resource Complex

What should a National Veterans Resource Complex look like, exactly? SHOP Architects has been given the official opportunity to find out, courtesy of Syracuse University. The early renderings for this project, which the school in a release is careful to note "are conceptual in nature and may not reflect the final NVRC design" show a rectilinear, sloping tiered structure with a massive central open-air courtyard.

According to Syracuse University, the NVRC "will include classroom spaces to accommodate local and national veteran-focused programming. It will also house a conference center and a roughly 1,000-seat auditorium, which will be available for use by the whole campus and fills a critical space void."

The facility will be designed to be LEED-certitified.

The fellowship ... makes it possible for junior faculty to spend a year developing a body of design research based on an area of interest while teaching [...] Maya Alam will explore new possibilities of identity and iconicity in architecture by reconsidering alternative connections between object, observer, and context. “I hope to explore with my students new categories of form and new architectural possibilities in engagement that fall outside the disciplinary conversation”

"I just want to point out that Professor Boghosian (which is what we called him at UA) was also a Cranbrook grad; the fact that he went there piqued my curiosity about the place, because he was clearly different form my other professors. Professor Boghosian was a dreamer but a fantastic teacher and a very thoughtful critic; even when giving hard criticism, he always did so kindly and for the love of our discipline. Congratulations to Professor Alam!"

Syracuse University is one step closer to selecting a world-class partner to conceptualize, design, and construct the new National Veterans Resource Complex (NVRC). The NVRC Selection Committee, made up of faculty, staff, students, and design professionals, recently reviewed the qualifications of 28 of the world’s foremost architecture firms.
