Inside the new entertainment annex at Hollywood’s iconic Sheats-Goldstein Residence

The latest addition to Hollywood’s famous Sheats-Goldstein Residence and Estate has been completed by Los Angeles-based firm Conner + Perry Architects. Named Club James, the new annex was originally envisioned by mid-century architect John Lautner and estate owner James Goldstein.

The overall residence continues to be a draw for architecture lovers, serving as one of Los Angeles’ most famous mid-century homes and being featured in many films, television series, fashion locations, and music videos. The home began construction in 1962 as a collaboration between architect Lautner and the Sheats family, and later the current owner James Goldstein. Conner + Perry Architects has overseen the project since 2015.

Goldstein and his team of architects, builders, engineers and landscape designers have been working on the Lautner house addition since 2003, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Goldstein’s property, which he has been tinkering with for more than 50 years. [...] “The purpose of all of this was to make the inside feel like it was outside,” said Goldstein, who describes a very collaborative working relationship with Lautner until the architect’s death, at 83, in 1994.

We swear, no BIG or Trump on this episode. We discuss the donation of Lautner's breathtaking Sheats-Goldstein house, complete with jungle, nightclub and infinity tennis court, to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to become the museum's first acquired piece of architecture (along with a sizable endowment for maintenance). The U.S. saw a major step forward into the realm of driverless cars, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told Google that its computers in autonomous vehicles could legally be counted as drivers, while the internet ogled Nissan's self-parking office chairs.

It's also that time of year again, when the AIA announces the keynote speakers for its National Convention (check out our podcast on last year's convention in Atlanta), and this year's threw us for a loop – first, actor Kevin Spacey was named as Day 1 speaker, and praised for his "disruption" of "appointment television". I want the house to be an educational tool for young architects, and I want to inspire good architecture for Los Angeles - James Goldstein

In a most generous move, public in Los Angeles is assured to have access to a masterpiece designed by legendary architect and maintained by its colorful owner Jim Goldstein who dedicated a good part of his living to the healthy survival of the house.

"Even though he had the Concannon Residence torn down, to his credit, James Goldstein made sure in his will that the expanded Goldstein House, and with that the legacy of both structures, will never be sold. The 1990 documentary "The Spirit in Architecture: John Lautner" screens in Beverly Hills on January 2, and it includes not only dramatic images of the buildings, but also interviews and insights from the builders, owners, and the architect himself.

Like the fine wine of architecture, the work of John Lautner only gets better with age. Whether experienced in exhibition form (the Hammer Museum's 2008 show was a marvelous introduction for those unfamiliar with his canon) to documentary film, Lautner's fearless yet elegant exploration of space and material continues to captivate decades after his death in 1994. What better way to start off 2016?
