Interdisciplinary design conference invites an architect, chef, escape room designer, blacksmith, and more to lend insights on design

Architect and author Francis D.K. Ching is among this year's speakers, along with blacksmith Matt Jenkins of Cloverdale Forge; Duluth installation artist Kathy McTavish; escape room designers and engineers Jamie Fassett-Carman and Mark Larson of Trapped Puzzle Rooms; 3-D printer and researcher Kevin Johnson; and chef Lucia Watson.

For the 32nd annual Lake Superior Design Retreat, organized by AIA Minnesota, architects and those interested in design come together to explore multidisciplinary aspects of design. In the spirit of the conference, this year's speakers cover a wide range of crafts and disciplines, one of which includes the legendary Francis D.K. Ching, known most popularly for his books Architecture: Form, Space, & Order, Building Construction Illustrated, and Building Codes Illustrated.

Artists and researchers of “Seeds of Time” exhibition join forces to rethink approaches to sustainability

Organized into the three “zones” of Field, Sequence, and Rooms, the exhibition will bring together the minds of artists and designers like Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Yoko Ono, and Olafur Eliasson and researchers such as the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, who will propose solutions and approaches to the ever-pressing issues of environmental and social sustainability.

As Chapter 2 of the Shanghai Project, the “Seeds of Time” is a cross-disciplinary exhibition designed by Hong Kong- and Madrid-based COLLECTIVE studio and curated by Dr. Yongwoo Lee and Hans Ulrich Obrist. The exhibition is at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum until July 30.

Architect Gustav Dusing selected for inagural Antarctic Biennial

As part of the newly launched interdisciplinary Antarctic Biennial, architect Gustav Dusing and artist Sho Hasegawa will be sent to Antarctica in March 2017 for what could be described as an inspiring, if chilly, imaginative tabula rasa. The winners for the Biennial were chosen during this year's Art Basel Miami. As the website for the organization explains, "We are building a unique community of people who are interested in reimagining the future of shared spaces, beginning with Antarctic culture as a model for global development. With the artistic core, we are creating the platform for the interdisciplinary dialogue."

RISD architecture students perform minimalist music masterpiece (for course credit)

Their choice of Terry Riley’s piece was ideal. Goethe called architecture “frozen music.” “In C” perfectly illustrates Goethe’s corollary: “Music is liquid architecture.” [...] Interdisciplinarity is a popular buzzword on many campuses, but in most cases it remains a mere slogan. Here was a shining model for other schools [...] It prompted students like Huizhong Sun and Marco Aguirre to remind me about the architectural concepts of simultaneity and interpenetration, and of “transparency”

The performance was part of a new RISD collaborative initiative, organized by the architecture department's head, Laura Briggs. Briggs brought together David Gersten (architect) and Michael Harrison (microtonal composer) to teach "Outside the Guidelines," where they approach architecture from complementary visual and auditory perspectives.
