The Murphy House wins 2016 RIBA House of the Year

The wait is over! Today, RIBA revealed Richard Murphy Architects' Murphy House in historic New Town, Edinburgh as the 2016 RIBA House of the Year. Henning Stummel Architects' Tin House in west London was also announced as the seventh shortlisted house.

Architect Richard Murphy designed the house as his personal residence. The house, which sits on an awkward plot at the end of a terrace, only has an 11 m. x 6 m. footprint and a floor area of 165 m2. Despite its modest size, the Murphy House comprises of five levels, with hidden spaces and a quirky jigsaw element of moving pieces and disappearing walls that charmed the jury.

The house includes three bedrooms, a living/dining/kitchen area at varying levels, a study, basement storage, garage, utility room, and a roof terrace. In creating the scheme, Murphy drew inspiration from his own design heroes like architect Carlo Scarpa.

Modern Mews and The Garden House shortlisted for 2016 RIBA House of the Year

Just one spot left on the shortlist for the 2016 RIBA House of the Year, which distinguishes the most innovative house designed by a UK-based architect. The Institute announced today that Modern Mews by Coffey Architects and The Garden House by Hayhurst and Co. are the latest projects to join the list. Once all seven houses are revealed, only one will be crowned as the winner on December 15.

Garden House in Hackney, east London by Hayhurst and Co.

Captivated by the meticulous attention to detail in the house, the jury cited Hayhurst and Co for skillfully creating a peaceful and private home that also provides “a rich and layered experience in a very small space”, calling it “a real achievement given the overlooked and enclosed nature of the site.”

RIBA is taking a little more time in revealing the shortlist for the 2016 House of the Year award. Most recently, RIBA announced that DSDHA's Covert House and the Murphy House by Richard Murphy Architects have made it onto the shortlist, along with the Outhouse and Ansty Plum revealed last week.

Anticipation for the 2016 RIBA House of the Year winner builds up as competition grows narrower...Last Thursday, the first two houses in the shortlist were announced: Ansty Plum in Wiltshire by Coppin Dockray and the Outhouse in Forest of Dean by Loyn & Co Architects. After all seven shortlisted houses are unveiled, the House of the Year will finally be revealed on [BBC's “Grand Designs”] on December 15.

Built on the flint-rich fields of the countryside Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, the Flint House was recently announced as the winner of RIBA's coveted House of the Year award during a TV broadcast on Britain's Channel 4. Formerly called the Manser Medal, House of the Year still holds the same purpose of distinguishing the year's most innovative house designed by a UK-based architect. RIBA and Channel 4 featured the shortlisted homes in a weekly TV series called "Grand Designs: RIBA House of the Year" throughout this past month.

The Flint House lives up to its name, designed as if the surrounding flint-surfaced landscape was emerging. Designed by Skene Catling De La Peña to accommodate visiting relatives as well as artists, the most distinctive element of the house on first glance is the textured flint cladding and its dark-to-chalk-white gradient.
