Architects react to shocking EU referendum result

Today marks a historic turning point for the UK and European Union - the UK has voted to quit the EU. What lays ahead no one is really sure; Cameron has already resigned this morning and discussions for a second Scottish referendum have begun.

The majority within the architecture industry have strongly and vocally supported the Remain campaign celebrating the integral role the EU has played in inspiring and funding creative projects, free movement and the benefits of an internal single market. Most importantly community; a community based on respect and support that derived from the desolate situation after World War Two that at its core believed in humanity.

The referendum has revealed some alarming results about the state of the UK, a very clearly divided country. However the decision has been made and we must now face up to these consequences, we must now address what kind of a nation we want to be.

POP Brixton to open in late May 2015

Created from low-cost, low-energy, shipping containers, the refreshing design has a focus on sustainability and efficiency. The converted units will create a mini-city, providing much needed flexible studio, retail, office and workshop space in one of London’s most vibrant communities.

For those of you that miss the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn, a new shipping container campus will be opening later this month in London. Designed by Carl Turner Architects, POP Brixton promises to be an incubator space for start-ups and small business, as well hosting private parties, community film screenings, street kiosks, workshops and more. Construction has already begun on the project with an opening scheduled later this month.

Also presented with institute honors that night were two projects which represent the UK's most excellent small projects: the 2013 Manser Medal for the best new home went to Slip House by Carl Turner Architects, and the 2013 Stephen Lawrence Prize in recognition of fresh talent and smaller construction budgets went to Montpelier Community Nursery by AY Architects.

Home from Home, a new installation by London-based Carl Turner Architects has now opened at MUDE (Museu do Design e da Moda), the Design and Fashion Museum of Lisbon.

Home from Home examines the design and details of a typical UK home. The installation is composed of five individual structures - each one representing different parts of the home - including the front room, the kitchen, the commode, the bed and the stair. Together these parts create a playfully abstract house, articulating ideas of British domesticity.

The installation is organised by the British Council as part of New Architects: Portugal-UK, the latest in a series of New Architects International Exchange programmes initiated by The Architecture Foundation.
