In celebration of I.M. Pei's 100th birthday tomorrow, the National Gallery of Art revisits his legacy

Harmonizing with architect John Russell Pope's neoclassical West Building, the award-winning East Building, which opened in 1978, was designed by Pei in the modern idiom of its time. Magnificently realizing the long-term vision of Gallery founder Andrew W. Mellon and his children, Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce, the East Building has taken its place as one of the great public structures in the nation's capital. — National Gallery of Art

I.M. Pei's 100th birthday is tomorrow! In celebration of the legendary architect's birthday, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. will host a public talk in the Pei-designed East Building featuring architect Perry Y. Chin – a longtime associate of Pei's — and Susan Wertheim, the Gallery's chief architect and deputy administrator for capital projects.

Among the several tributes to the U.S. National Park Service's centennial birthday today, The White House, National Geographic, Felix & Paul Studios, and Oculus released “Through the Ages: President Obama Celebrates America’s National Parks”, a 360-degree VR video featuring stunning views of Yosemite National Park — narrated by special tour guide President Obama. Captured during the First Family's visit to the park earlier this summer, the nearly 11-minute video shows off popular spots like El Capitan, Mariposa Grove, Glacier Point, and a canoe ride through Merced River.

25-year-old architect wins WWI Centennial Memorial competition in D.C.

As the cityscape of Washington D.C. continues to evolve, another project is in the works at the National World War One Memorial at Pershing Park. Today, the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission announced that 25-year-old architect Joseph Weishaar of Brininstool+Lynch and New York veteran sculptor Sabin Howard won the Centennial Memorial design competition with their proposal, "The Weight of Sacrifice". Not a bad start for Weishaar's professional career, no?

In anticipation of centennial, Yale School of Architecture preps "Pedagogy and Place" exhibition

“Pedagogy and Place: Celebrating 100 Years of Architecture Education at Yale”... will present YSoA alumni work and archival documents tracing the development of architecture education at Yale and the buildings that have housed the architecture program. [...] An auxiliary installation ... depicts more than 30 architecture schools from around the world to further illuminate the evolution of architecture education and the relationship between pedagogy and place.

The free and public exhibition “Pedagogy and Place” opens December 3 and is on display through May 7, 2016, located in Yale's Rudolph Hall gallery at 180 York St.
