Five tasteful bars and breweries by Bergmeyer: Your Next Employer?

Following last week’s visit to Connecticut-based Joeb Moore & Partners, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Southern California this week to explore the work of Bergmeyer.

From their studios across Los Angeles, Boston, and Columbus, Bergmeyer has built a diverse portfolio around their core pillars of creativity, connectedness, and curiosity. “We are a design collaborative; inspired through partnership, thoughtfully creative, inherently curious, and driven to fulfill our clients’ needs,” the firm notes about its philosophy.

Over on Archinect Jobs, they are currently hiring a Managing Director for their LA office. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning more about the studio’s work, we have rounded up five brewery and bar projects by Bergmeyer that demonstrate their design approach.

Placing a ‘culinary emporium’ inside an old Toronto postal station

Giannone Petricone Associates has completed Stock T.C, a “culinary emporium” designed to offer a selection of high-quality ingredients, ready-to-eat foods, and an inviting dining experience.

Situated in a historical postal station in Toronto, Canada, the space includes an open market at the ground level, a 200-seat bistro on the second floor, and an event space with a circular bar and roof terrace on the third floor.

The restoration and repurposing of the 1936 limestone postal station included lining the perimeter walls with a second skin, from which shelves, lighting, and acoustic dampeners are hung, integrating the original structure with modern installations.

Inside the 'robust' new Ace Hotel Toronto by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects

The 123-room Ace Hotel has opened in Toronto, designed by acclaimed Canadian practice Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, recipients of the 2021 RAIC Gold Medal. Located in the city’s Garment District, the hotel adopts what the team calls a “robust, solid architecture” with a material palette including brick, concrete, steel, and oak.

The 14-story building’s exterior is clad in red brick — a “statement of resistance against recent thin and glassy developments in the area,” according to the team The main entrance is marked by a sweeping undercroft detailed in brick, concrete, copper, and wood, while oversized glass windows bring views and natural light into the interior.

Inside, the lobby features a series of poured-in-place, steel-edged concrete structural arches. Each frame terminates with an oversized industrial steel “knuckle” that transfers the load of the floors above from the arches to the foundation...

BoND’s new Company Gallery space offers a unique showcase for Queer artists and for themselves

One of the flashiest openings in the art world this fall came not in the form of a suite of salable oil paintings or an of-the-moment sculptural showcase but rather from a one-time dry goods storage space which has been converted into the new home of New York’s Company Gallery by an upstart duo called BoND.

The duo is formed by Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger, partners in business and in life, who say their design was inspired by several different elements of the history of the city’s Queer arts community for whom Company was founded seven years ago.

The gallery’s roster features a veritable who’s who of hot young artists like Jonathan Lyndon Chase and Raúl de Nieves and was looking for a space to help inaugurate “a jump to a different chapter” with the help of some highly skilled hands from inside that same community.

PARTISANS completes new bar and restaurant in downtown Toronto

Gusto 501, designed by PARTISANS, is the latest bar and restaurant by restauranteur Janet Zuccarini located in downtown Toronto. The new restaurant takes inspiration from its surrounding industrial neighborhood, utilizing the footprint of the car garage that previously sat on the site.

The facade is a massive operable wall of glass that can open and allow natural ventilation into the space. Two walls made of terracotta and steel frame both ends of the glass front. PARTISANS worked with terracotta to realize a textured interior using bricks cut into six variant angles that create an undulating, corbeled effect.

The glass roof rises 50 feet high and washes the space with natural light and creates an ever-changing interplay of shadows on the textured walls.

Inspired by a common canning jar, Snøhetta designs a new bar for the Oslo Airport

Despite being built just under 20 years ago, a rapid surge in passengers has left the Oslo Airport pretty far past capacity. So a big renovation and expansion is underway, with a first phase just completed this April. Inside the expanded arrivals and departure hall, the Norwegian superstar practice Snøhetta has designed a unique bar and “interior concept”.

Named Norgesglasset after a ubiquitous jar used for picking and storing food, the 65 square meter design riffs on its namesake. 4,000 jar clad the ceiling and back wall. Conceived as one continuous organic form, the back wall rises 4.8 meter from the floor and juts out over the seating area. It’s complemented by a chandelier, also made of the Norgesglasset jars.

The circular bar is surrounded by red chairs that match a red rubber floor and a red couch lining the back wall. The red is a nod to the red rubber gasket on the distinctive jars. Additionally, Snøhetta designed new employee uniforms and menu cards to match the aesthetic.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson has a knack for creating fictional spaces with attention paid to the last excruciating detail. His latest space is real, though, and even better, you can get a drink there. [...] Three new buildings, which were part of a century-old distillery and transformed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, will now house art rather than alcohol. The winners of the 5th annual UK and International Restaurant and Bar Design Awards were announced during the London awards ceremony on Sept. 12. Every year, the competition receives entries from the best architects, designers and hospitality operators in the UK and worldwide. The judges also usually consist of several influential figures including designers, creative and hotel directors, editors, and food critics.

Portuguese collective DOSE has sent us images and a fascinating time-lapse video of their project BLUETUBE BAR, a temporary bar to operate at the annual academic festival in Oporto, Portugal, Queima das Fitas. The project won the student competition sponsored by the School of Architecture at Oporto University.
