<p>This semester begins on Thursday, <a href="https://www.architecture.yale.edu/calendar/655-dig-it-building-bound-to-the-ground" target="_blank">January 11</a>, with Bjarne Mastenbroek’s lecture ‘<em>Dig It! Building Bound to the Ground</em>’. The events continue the next week when <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/617863/nader-tehrani" target="_blank">Nader Tehrani</a> stops by New Haven on Thursday, <a href="https://www.architecture.yale.edu/calendar/656-the-animate-analytique" target="_blank">January 18</a>, to talk about ‘<em>The Animate Analytique</em>’ in architectural design. <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/114231/tatiana-bilbao" target="_blank">Tatiana Bilbao</a> will follow his appearance on Thursday, <a href="https://www.architecture.yale.edu/calendar/657-the-people-and-i" target="_blank">January 25</a>, to deliver her lecture titled ‘<em>The People and I</em>,’ and the next month will begin Thursday, <a href="https://www.architecture.yale.edu/calendar/658-double-negatives-on-pictures-and-petroaesthetics" target="_blank">February 1</a>, with the Myriam Bellazoug Memorial Lecture ‘<em>Double Negatives: On Pictures and Petroaesthetics’</em> from Esther Choi.</p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/5d/5de0d4bc9b31dc4784e3fb0111ecaec2.jpeg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>The <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale School of Architecture</a> has just announced a new scholarship named after 2022 Pritzker Prize winner <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/891205/di-b-do-francis-k-r" target="_blank">Francis Kéré</a> in the interest of supporting African students at the school as they complete their journey to a career in architecture.</p>
<p>“There are so many aspiring African architects, and with a Yale education, they will be able to excel,” Kéré said. “I am the first African architect to be recognized with a Pritzker, and, thanks to the Francis Kéré Scholarship, I hope there will be many more to come.”</p>
<p>Kéré taught at Yale as a William B. and Charlotte Shepherd Davenport Visiting Professor in 2019 and, more recently, as the prestigious Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor in 2022. He has remained active in the school’s academic community, which he referred to as “welcoming and vibrant” and also a “place to be.”</p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/2c/2c7773dd85ef544e757dce1f55e1ce24.jpeg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><em><p>The center’s main objectives are to research, develop and test novel building-integrated systems for on-site energy generation, air cleaning, water purification and food growing [...] the CEA is a 'consortium that unites researchers in the R&D of novel building research,' bringing together the resources of multiple departments on campus.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The four-year-old Center for Architecture and Ecosystems (CEA) was founded as a collaboration between <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale School of Architecture,</a> the <a href="https://environment.yale.edu/" target="_blank">School of Environment</a>, and four other colleges. The Center has thus far conducted prototyping projects in Guatemala and South Africa and will, in the future, leverage collaborations with <a href="https://archinect.com/rice" target="_blank">Rice</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/1544387/cornell-university" target="_blank">Cornell</a>, the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/1908078/university-of-arizona" target="_blank">University of Arizona</a>, and other institutions in further pursuit of its <a href="https://www.cea.yale.edu/projects" target="_blank">ambitious</a> research and development aims.</p>

Above all, “Learning from Las Vegas” argues for a curious and open-minded anti-utopianism, for understanding cities as they are rather than how planners wish they might be—and then using that knowledge, systematically and patiently won, as the basis for new architecture.</p></em><br /><br /><p><a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale</a>’s new visiting critic <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/4359/christopher-hawthorne" target="_blank">Christopher Hawthorne</a> considers the lasting inspirational qualities and history of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1205923/steven-izenour" target="_blank">Steven Izenour</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/262701/denise-scott-brown" target="_blank">Denise Scott Brown</a>, and <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/19781/robert-venturi" target="_blank">Robert Venturi</a>'s seminal 1972 text, whose origins can be traced to a studio the young newlyweds taught in New Haven in the fall of 1968. The scholarship fund has been jointly established by <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150314629/adjaye-may-be-asked-to-repay-national-cathedral-fees-as-ghanaian-political-campaign-turns-ugly" target="_blank">Yale School of Architecture</a> and the <a href="https://archinect.com/CUArch" target="_blank">Catholic University of America</a>.</p>
<p>Born in Uganda in 1976, Adengo received her B.Arch from Catholic University in 2000 before entering Yale and graduating with an M.Arch in 2005. From there, she went on to found her own eponymous practice (<a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/150336778/adengo-architecture" target="_blank">Adengo Architecture</a>) after ten years of working in offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and London.<br></p>
<p>Adengo left behind a legacy of achievement in both urbanism and architecture that helped greatly influence the development of contemporary architecture and urban design strategies while earning her the reputation and status of a role model for young practitioners.</p>

<p>A notoriously pedantic native New Yorker, Garvin earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale and served in the city government under mayors Lindsay, Beame, Koch, Giuliani, and Bloomberg after working as an architect in the offices of Phillip Johnson <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/20/nyregion/alexander-garvin-dead.html" target="_blank">for a brief period of time</a>. </p>
<p>Garvin was behind some of the biggest urban planning projects in recent American memory. His noteworthy contributions to the county’s largest cities included the post-<a href="https://archinect.com/features/tag/1826239/9-11" target="_blank">9/11</a> master plan for the World Trade Center site in Manhattan and the BeltLine development in Atlanta. </p>

<p>Berke, who has served as <a href="https://archinect.com/features/article/149958873/deborah-berke-shares-her-vision-as-incoming-dean-at-the-yale-school-of-architecture" target="_blank">Dean at Yale since 2016</a>, was commended for her “engaged approach in every graduate architecture student’s education” in addition to the initiatives that she has spearheaded during her tenure in New Haven, which include the introduction of an undergraduate Urban Studies major, the creation of Yale’s Center for Ecosystems in Architecture as well as the school’s first architectural sciences lab.</p>

Charelle Brown, Anjelica Gallegos, and Summer Sutton have made history at Yale. Not only are all three women currently enrolled in three academic programs but through their resilience and initiative to represent <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/418923/indigenous-culture" target="_blank">indigenous people</a> in architecture. Underrepresented groups are using their stories, their struggles, and their own perspectives to change and rewrite the future of the built environment. </p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/a5/a5521742b55964759080b44c32a28b54.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>First-year professional degree students of <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale</a> School of Architecture are hard at work designing and building a new three-unit <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/110562/affordable-housing" target="_blank">affordable housing</a> complex in New Haven's Hill neighborhood. <br></p>
<p>Formally known as the <a href="http://www.yalearchitecture.org/buildingproject/bp19/" target="_blank">Jim Vlock First Year Building Project</a>, the year-long studio has been an annual ritual at the university since 1989 when then-dean <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/14974/charles-moore" target="_blank">Charles Moore</a> instituted the program. Since then, Yale students have worked to design and build homes for over 50 New Haven families, according to the university. This year's run of the program is being carried out in partnership with <a href="https://www.columbushouse.org/" target="_blank">Columbus House</a>, a non-profit organization that works to address homelessness in the New Haven area. </p>

Gehry's 90th birthday</a>, the <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yale School of Architecture</a> has received a $5 million gift for financial aid scholarships in his honor. Made by the philanthropist and real estate baron Richard D. Cohen, it is the largest gift toward financial aid in the school's history. </p>
<p>Gehry has served as a visiting professor at the esteemed university on and off since 1979, most recently teaching a semester-long studio on <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/reimagining-prison-with-frank-gehry" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">architecture and mass incarceration</a>. Given his time teaching there and his great respect for the school, Gehry said in a <a href="https://news.yale.edu/2019/02/28/school-architecture-receives-gift-financial-aid-honoring-frank-gehry" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">statement</a> that he is honored to be associated with the school through the scholarship fund. </p>
<p>The Gehry Scholarships, made possible through Cohen's donation, will be given annually to three entering master's students. The scholarship will not only support their graduate studies, but will also provide opportunities to travel to Los Angeles to see Gehry's work and visit <a href="https://archinect.com/gehry" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">his architecture firm</a>. </p>

They decided not to draw any particular conclusions from the data, and instead hope to use the exhibit as a conversation starter. “A large part of the exhibit was trying to get a more nuanced idea of sexism. By building green, we can lessen the impact our buildings have on contributing to climate change while also building resilience into our homes and communities.<br></p>
<p>Seeking new solutions, the United Nations Environment Programme and UN Habitat recently teamed up with the <a href="http://www.cea.yale.edu" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yale Center for Ecosystems in Architecture</a> to explore how sustainable design can limit the overuse of natural resources and climate change while also providing decent, affordable housing. “We clearly need more housing," said Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment. "But the key thing is that we also need smarter housing” he added.</p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/to/tocu0ft58efizoaz.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><em><p>This year’s house marks the 50th project built by first-year students in the Yale School of Architecture’s professional degree program. Since it started in 1967, the building project has produced structures for communities around New Haven, including the Bridgeport band shell, pavilions in East Rock Park and Lighthouse Point Park, and since 1989, affordable housing units for over 30 families.</p></em><br /><br /><p>First-year graduate students at Yale School of Architecture and Design have built a family house in New Haven. The two units are separated by a walkway but under the same roof. The project was realized in collaboration with <a href="http://www.columbushouse.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Columbus House</a>, a New Haven-based <a href="https://archinect.com/searchall/homelessness" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">homelessness</a> services provider. Most of the house was prefabricated on Yale campus. </p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/nw/nwci2s0vhcv3qb31.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><em><p>Inside the pavilion is a long table embedded with exhibits and audio stations telling the stories of people who are either experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, along with excerpts from data sets, state reports, urban theory, poetry, and literature.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Working with New Haven-based homeless services provider <a href="http://www.columbushouse.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Columbus House</a>, students from the <a href="http://archinect.com/yale" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yale School of Architecture</a> designed an interactive pavilion that will be featured at this year’s festival together with an exhibition of student work in the YSoA architecture gallery showing proposals for affordable two-unit dwellings. </p>
<p>“The built environment affects us all, and it is our belief that architects and designers have an important role to play in addressing many of the most vexing issues of our time, including the shortage of <a href="http://archinect.com/news/tag/110562/affordable-housing" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">affordable housing</a> and making our cities more inclusive," states Deborah Berke, Dean of the YSoA. </p>
<p>The pavilion is open to the public 10AM - 4PM through June 24, and the exhibition will be on display Monday-Friday, 9AM - 5PM, and Saturday, 10AM - 5PM. through Aug. 12 at the YSoA gallery, 180 York St.</p>

The exhibition, which is curated by Greg Lynn, is the third and final exhibition of the “Archaeology of the Digital” series organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA). The series highlights 25 seminal projects while considering the preservation challenges posed by digital archives.</p><p>Unlike the first two exhibitions, “Complexity and Convention” looks at similarities, rather than distinctions, in the approaches of various projects. But only one student enrolled in the class “despite students voicing grievances about a lack of female representation”, the Yale Daily News reports.</p><p>James-Chakraborty questions if such diversity courses should become a requirement in the school's already rigid curriculum. The AIA’s refusal to take a principled stance on an incoming administration that galvanized support through hatred, divisiveness, and fear constitutes an abdication of its self-proclaimed responsibility to speak on behalf of architects and a contradiction of its own stated beliefs.</p><p>We, the undersigned students of the Yale School of Architecture, unequivocally denounce the AIA’s endorsement of the new status quo. For too long, our profession has been complicit in giving form to landscapes of inequality and discrimination, and has itself been plagued by a history of racial and gender inequity. Stern</a> as the dean of the Yale School of Architecture. Berke has ideas about how to shape the future of the school's pedagogy.
