Announcing Black in Design: Designing Resistance, Building Coalitions—Register Now!

The Harvard University Graduate School of Design African American Student Union is excited to announce the second biannual Black in Design conference on October 6-8, 2017.

The conference promotes discourse around the agency of the design profession to address and dismantle institutional barriers faced by communities of color. The second edition, Designing Resistance, Building Coalitions, builds on the success of the 2015 inaugural conference, which brought together more than 400 design researchers and practitioners from across the United States. The conference will cover a range of topics from Exploring and Visualizing Identities, Communicating Values, Mobilizing and Organizing to Design Futuring, with the aim of serving as a platform to unearth our agency as designers to envision more radical and equitable futures.

Saturday features a full day of a fantastic array of speakers, including Michelle Wilkinson of the National Museum of Africa...

Laura Amaya interviewed Giancarlo Mazzanti, founder and principal of El Equipo de Mazzanti. The two discussed "architecture for social inclusion...from a political point of view", play or leisure, and "an architecture made of parts...or open work".

Meanwhile the latest editions of Deans List: featured Kenneth Schwartz of Tulane School of Architecture and Amale Andraos of Columbia University's GSAPP. vado retro agreed that Tulane is a "great school in a great city. enjoy it while it is still above water."

In a collaboration with the Architecture Biennial, Archinect offered up an Chicago installment of Next Up, the live-podcasting event.

Patrik Schumacher shared some criticism of the event and participants "one still wonders whether these laudable concerns should usurp the space that was presumably meant to be allocated to contemporary architecture."

midlander countered "I'd love to see some plans - it's hard to figure out the scale of things or the circulation strategy from these little renderings...While I appreciate Horsley's criticism, he seems to be missing a sense of perspective on this. For example when he suggests adding a direct subway link to Manhattan would be an inconsequential couple million. Off by a factor of 5,000 or so I think."
