However, each firm's success also comes down to the unsung contributions of emerging talent whose efforts are often overlooked. This transitional role from a recent graduate to design professional continues to teeter between a slippery slope of "exposure" and "working experience" with unfair work practices. AJ's latest initiative, AJ100 New Talent, however, aims to "champion those who may not always be given the credit they deserve."

Celebrating this year's design cohort is a step towards re-writing the narrative for architectural assistants who were once thought of as voiceless and underrepresented. The AJ adds that this celebration of talent "chimes with [their] focus on the struggles facing those entering the profession and the need for change. As we progress in our careers in architecture, we can sometimes come to a crossroads where we feel like we're pretending. Maybe it's that first time on a construction site by yourself, and the fear of looking foolish or not knowing what to say begins to creep up. Perhaps, you've just completed your ARE Exams and are now officially "an architect," but owning that identity seems strange, almost like you're acting. And even then, there are those who finally make it into a leadership role, as a design principal or partner of a firm, and, in the beginning, the status feels uneasy.

Designer, Megan Crabtree recounts this feeling from her early career. "[I] spent the first few years of my professional life trying to be a good pretender, trying to ignore this voice in my head that takes over and says I don’t belong," she writes. Michael Riscica, the founder of Young Architect has created a new kind of architecture conference. One that is geared specifically for the emerging generation of students and professionals. From his past experiences participating and speaking at architecture conferences, Riscica has identified some common characteristics that he feels need to be improved. In his view, traditional conferences tend to focus too much on lecturing from the stage and not enough on engagement and interaction. They do not typically focus on the next generation of the profession, and products and economics can sometimes grab too much of the focus. Riscica believes that an engaging conference should be "harnessing the power of the minds of the audience to see how we can serve our profession and our communities."

Architecture apprenticeship model launching next month between UK schools and firms

The first group of architectural apprentices will start at leading practices such as AHMM, Hawkins\Brown and PRP next month as a major new sector initiative gets underway. Practices AtelierWest, GPA (Get Planning and Architecture), Ingleton Wood, and To-Do Design are also pioneering two types of apprenticeships as a route into the profession in collaboration with London South Bank University.

Following the architecture apprenticeship initiative led by Foster + Partners, the first group entering the ‘earn while you learn’ program will begin next month in the UK. This approach will offer both professional experience and tuition-free academic training, while also providing a salary to apprentices.

Charles Egbu, dean of London Southbank’s School of Architecture and the Built Environment stated, "These apprenticeship courses will provide an alternative, more cost-effective route to ARB registration, while diversifying the profession and strengthening ties between the architectural industry and academia."

London Southbank’s School of Architecture will be the only one to offer Level 6 apprenticeship. Participating schools also include De Montford, Northumbria, Oxford Brookes, and Portsmouth offering Level 7 qualification.

AIA speaks out against unpaid internships in new emerging professionals campaign

The Center for Emerging Professionals introduces a campaign dedicated to informing all generations of architects about the value Emerging Professionals bring to the field and the importance of getting paid for internship hours.

Responding to ongoing debates regarding unpaid internships and the devaluing of the profession, the AIA has launched a new educational campaign called "Know Your Worth", to inform and publicize how architects should value themselves in today's profession.

In a pair of videos introducing the campaign, architects at SmithGroupJJR (Los Angeles), McGraw Bagnoli Architects (Washington, DC) and Klimatic Architecture (Washington, DC) discuss the value of young and emerging professionals to the profession, and perhaps most importantly, present an unflinching view on unpaid internships – just don't do it. "If someone is in a situation where they're needing to argue about whether or not they should be paid, my advice would be to walk away from the situation," said Laura Ondrich, Architect at SmithGroupJJR, in below's "Value Your Work" video by the AIA.
