In response to this still-too-common situation, the Van Alen Institute launched the “Open Poll” flash competition, wherein interdisciplinary teams were invited to submit design proposals that create a more accessible, engaging voting experience for all.

The three finalist teams presented their proposals to the judges and the public got to watch and vote for their favorite entry. By the end of the one-day charrette, the winning team was announced. Have a look at the finalist entries below.

Winner: “Voting at Your Fingertips: A National Celebration of the Democratic Process”
Team: Racha Daher, Alexandra Gonzalez, and Elena Kapompasopoulou

Project description: “The current voting process is inefficient, strenuous, wasteful, non-inclusive, and prone to human error. Following the 1964-65 World's Fair, the elliptical “Tent of Tomorrow” lived shortly as a concert venue and a roller-skating rink before it eventually slipped into abandonment. But, the aging landmark has another chance at finding a shiny new purpose in the New York State Pavilion Ideas Competition.

Among recent efforts to preserve the landmark, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the People for the Pavilion co-launched the competition asking architects (and non-architects) how the pavilion can be revived into a contemporary public space. Before the winning ideas are revealed in August, the public can vote now for the Fan Favorite until July 15.

As these open idea competitions tend to show all too exhaustingly often, the possibilities are seemingly endless. [German Pirate Party rapporteur Julia] Reda said this "could threaten the work of documentary filmmakers and the legality of commercial photo-sharing platforms."

The EU may soon require stricter permissions be met for any visual representation of public art and architecture. So-called "Freedom of Panorama" refers to a set of provisions in copyright law, that allows someone to create and publish images of a piece of art or architecture that's permanently located in the public space, regardless of its existing copyright provisions. The provisions are adopted to varying degrees in different countries – in the US, only buildings are protected under FOP, and in the EU, FOP provisions depend on whether the image is for commercial use or not, as well as the kind of object being photographed.

But soon, the EU may decide to effectively abolish FOP. On July 9, European Parliament will vote on an amended version of its copyright provisions, that states any/all copyright permissions for a piece of public art or architecture must be met when someone publishes an image of it with any potential commercial use.
