A new documentary explores the process behind UVA's Memorial to Enslaved Laborers for the first time

A new documentary from local filmmaker Erik Duda exploring the process and impact of the University of Virginia’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers has been released, providing insights into the creation of one of the most important public monuments in America since the opening of Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982.

Titled The Lives Between the Lines, Duda’s documentary was included as part of this year’s Virginia Film Festival and offers a look into the implementation, design, and eventual construction of the monument, which, unfortunately, had to open in a subdued ceremony last year owing to health concerns related to the pandemic.

A circular floating pathway will allow visitors to walk atop Philadelphia's Schuylkill River

A captivating, one-of-a-kind structure will allow visitors to seemingly walk atop the Schuylkill River, right along the southern shoreline of Philadelphia’s Bartram’s Garden. Set to arrive in 2022, FloatLab is a large, walkable art installation and learning lab. It is a new project from Mural Arts Philadelphia with support from the William Penn Foundation and is being designed by Boston-based firm Höweler + Yoon Architecture.

The lime green, ring-shaped pathway will change in elevation as visitors walk through it, creating points where one is walking above the water and others where one is eye level with the river. Approaches in architectural design, marine engineering, and naval architecture inform a system of eight ballast chambers below the structure’s surface, which allow FloatLab to remain consistently level and stable as the tide moves in and out.

J. Meejin Yoon named Cornell's next AAP Dean

American architect J. Meejin Yoon, founding principal of the Boston-based firm Höweler + Yoon (with partner Eric Höweler) and currently head of the architecture department at MIT's School of Architecture and Planning, has been appointed as the next Dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University.

Yoon, herself an AAP alumna (B.Arch. '95), will commence her five-year term as the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean on January 1, 2019. She will be succeeding Kent Kleinman, AAP Dean from 2008 to 2018, and the current interim Dean, Kieran Donaghy.

In a statement published today, AAP praised Yoon for her achievements as department head at MIT and her experience as practitioner:

Yoon's current research interests include the role of technology in contemporary design culture, the instrumentality of design in the public realm, and the social and environmental responsibility of the built environment.

The team won with the project "Shareway," a proposal calling for the reinvention of the Boston-Washington, D.C., metropolitan region called Boswash. The Audi Urban Future Award 2012 is an international architecture competition that focuses on specific mobility scenarios in five metropolitan, regions Boston/Washington, Istanbul, Mumbai, Pearl River Delta, and São Paulo.

Howeler + Yoon won the competition to design the center, named BSA Space, which will include gallery, office, multimedia and meeting spaces for members, potential members and the general public. The two story, 17,000 square foot center will give the BSA a very public presence in an area with lots of foot traffic among restaurants, stores, and public transportation in the Fort Point Channel district.
