Get Lectured: Woodbury University, Spring '24

Get Lectured continues its Spring 2024 roundup today with a look a the speakers and events in store at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in Los Angeles over the upcoming weeks and months.

The semester begins with a special Welding Workshop and lecture presentation from Austrian artist Thea Moelle on Thursday, January 25. That event is followed by a guest lecture and tour of Black modernist designs around L.A. with the influential Hood Century architectural documenter Jerald Cooper from February 23-25.

Be sure not to miss the trio of student, guest, and faculty exhibitions that open in the school’s Wedge Gallery on February 2, March 1, and April 5, respectively. Finally, there are also a pair of faculty-led symposiums to check out, beginning with the Association for Women in Architecture and Design presentation on March 26 and ending with Conversations About Buildings and Food with faculty members Scrap Marshall and Paulette Singley on April 19.

As schools of architecture come back into session, Archinect's Get Lectured series continues with a look at the public programs taking place this Fall semester at Woodbury University's School of Architecture.

Events begin on Friday, September 15, in the school’s Wedge Gallery with a lecture from ceramicists Claudia V. Solórzano and Courtney Cho. On September 19, UCLA doctoral candidate Alexa Vaughn will deliver the lecture ‘DeafScape / Design with Disabled People Now’ at 6pm in the Ahmanson Main Space. She will be followed by Kevin Sherrod’s ‘Color Commentary’ lecture at 7 p.m on October 20. Sherrod will be joined by DeMar Matthews and Sean Joyner on the same day for a discussion that takes place in Ahmanson an hour before.

Heather Flood appointed Dean of Woodbury’s School of Architecture

Heather Flood has been appointed Dean of the School of Architecture at Woodbury University. Described by the institution as an “inspiring leader and designer, as well as a passionate advocate of design education,” Flood’s appointment is effective as of December 1, 2022.

“I’m grateful to be part of a School that embraces change, difference, and choice,” Flood said regarding her appointment. “The exceptional faculty, administrators, and staff at Woodbury School of Architecture instill excellence while cultivating independence empowering students to think and make the world as it should be.”

Woodbury University's Interior Design program receives prestigious $75,000 Donghia Foundation grant

The Interior Design program at Woodbury University's School of Architecture has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Angelo Donghia Foundation.

The Angelo Donghia Foundation is part of the renowned home furnishings company Donghia Inc., founded by the late American interior designer Angelo Donghia. The award will be used over the course of three years for a Senior Studio program for Interior Design students and help fund "fieldwork study expenses," allowing students to gain hands-on experience during their final year of study.

James Florio receives 2022 Julius Shulman Excellence in Photography Award

Woodbury University's Julius Shulman Institute (JSI) has acted as an important bridge that connects the general public with the disciplines of architecture and photography. For this year's 2022 edition, the JSI presents James Florio with the prestigious Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award.

Florio's photographic works capture the intimate details of the built environment in nature and within cityscapes. Many of his past works and projects document how time, nature, and climate impact architecture and landscapes. While the photographs shown here primarily highlight his latest work with Ensamble Studio, other projects such as the Cervantes Theatre, Exeter Library, and Gio Ponti Denver Art Museum exhibit Florio's eye for investigating structure, materials, texture, and shadow from a macro to micro-scale.

Architecture schools continue to showcase upcoming lecture and event programming for the 2022 Spring season. For this iteration of Archinect's Get Lectured Spring 2022 focus, Woodbury University School of Architecture has an exciting line-up of guest lecturers. Woodbury explains, "for the past several years, we have chosen an annual social justice-focused topic. Two years ago, the theme was Housing. Last year, we investigated the theme of Climate Justice. This year, the theme is Intelligence."

Woodbury School of Architecture is accepting applications for three new degree programs set to launch in Fall 2022: Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Practices, and Bachelor of Science in Design Computation.

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program teaches students to transform the built environment by building sustainably. Students will integrate design, technology, and business analytics with sustainability and the liberal arts, using hands-on, studio-based learning. Coursework will explore human-centered design principles; how to apply business models, ranging from organizational management to strategic thinking to construction management; and investigations in Building Information Modeling (BIM) coupled with other construction-related technologies.

Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter announces her leave as Woodbury School of Architecture Dean

After five years as the Dean of Woodbury School of Architecture, architect and academic Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter announced this Monday morning that she will leave her position. Wahlroos-Ritter's appointment as Dean began on June 1, 2017. Since then, she has acted as a force in elevating the program and carry on with its mission to prepare students for careers in architecture.

Along with her experience as a practicing architect and facades specialist, she has also taught at other architecture institutions like SCI-Arc, Yale, Cornell, and the Bartlett. Wahlroos-Ritter joined Woodbury's faculty in 2005. Before her appointment as Dean, she has held several teaching and administrative roles, including Undergraduate and Graduate Architecture Chair and Associate Dean. Woodbury University's Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter will speak on housing at UN Headquarters

Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Dean of the School of Architecture at Woodbury University, will present on the topic of affordable housing at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This comes as part of the UN's 58th Session of the Commission for Social Development. According to Woodbury, Ingalill will be presenting the college's Housing+ Initiative, a year long program of lectures, exhibitions, and studio inquiries focused on the issue of housing. The presentation will include a discussion of three case studies meant to provide examples of the importance of partnerships and how alliances can help fuel impactful design solutions.

The three case studies include practical issues that Woodbury students are currently tackling:

The Design School at ASU names Marc Neveu as new program head of architecture

Marc Neveu will be joining The Design School in Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in fall 2018 as the new program head for the school’s innovative architecture program. As former chair of graduate and undergraduate architecture programs and current associate dean of the School of Architecture at Woodbury University in Los Angeles, Neveu brings a fresh perspective to The Design School’s rapidly evolving architecture program.

"Under Neveu’s leadership, the undergraduate program at Woodbury University was ranked nationally by Design Intelligence for the first time in the program’s history and has moved up in the rankings the last three years," explains a statement by ASU's The Design School. "Currently the executive editor of the biannual peer-reviewed Journal of Architectural Education, the former Fulbright fellow is a widely acclaimed educator and scholar whose research considers the role of history in contemporary praxis. His essays have been published in Architecture’s Appeal, with a forthcoming manuscript slated to be published this year."

An architecture program should empower students to ask questions, reframe new problems and challenge the status quo. Woodbury School of Architecture (WSoA) is doing this by rethinking the student experience to better prepare our graduates for an ever-evolving professional world. With programs such as the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL), the Agency for Civic Engagement (ACE), the Real Estate Development (RED) program, and studio partnerships with professional offices, WSoA prepares students for a profession that they themselves will transform.

Programs in WSoA are evolving. So too is the path to professional licensure. Reports show that the average time from graduation to licensure is roughly seven years, and that is the average for candidates who become licensed. Woodbury's Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter talks ethics and culture with LAT

Very rarely does ethics become a selling point for a client or a selling point when you’re talking about a studio project. It’s very rarely the idea generator. I think most practitioners traditionally came from a comfortable or upper-middle-class. It’s the Jeffersonian ideal: the gentleman designer. Architects in this country tend to have clients who are in the upper income level. And I think that has really been a problem. Our students, many of them, come from underserved communities.

Back in July, Archinect featured Woodbury's new dean, Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, as a part of the Deans List series, in an interview about the importance of economic diversity and the school's commitment to egalitarian and practical education. The Los Angeles Times recently conducted a similar interview, in which Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter discusses her priorities as the new head of the school, Woodbury's culture and ethics.

Where do you hope to take the school? What are your priorities?

One of the things I’ve been focusing on over the last 10 years is our institutes. Our civic engagement institute started as Architecture and Civic Engagement. It was incubated in the school of architecture. Woodbury University has named Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, AIA, Dean of the School of Architecture. Her appointment is effective June 1st, 2017. School of Architecture Dean Norman Millar, who previously taught at SCI-Arc, UCLA, Pasadena Art Center and was active on both the San Diego and Los Angeles campuses of Woodbury, succumbed to pancreatic cancer on April 14. He was 62 years old. Named "Educator of the Year" in 2014 by the AIA|LA and elected as President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2012, Millar's legacy extended not only to his pragmatic pedagogy, but his dedication to fostering a culture of warmth and joy among his students. According to a statement released by Woodbury, he once said that “I exited architecture school with the intention of making good buildings, and discovered that teaching expanded my passion by fostering it in students."
