<p>The semester begins with a special Welding Workshop and lecture presentation from Austrian artist Thea Moelle on Thursday, January 25. That event is followed by a guest lecture and tour of Black modernist designs around L.A. with the influential <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2156742/hood-century" target="_blank">Hood Century</a> architectural documenter <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2156759/jerald-cooper" target="_blank">Jerald Cooper</a> from February 23-25. </p>
<p>Be sure not to miss the trio of student, guest, and faculty exhibitions that open in the school’s Wedge Gallery on February 2, March 1, and April 5, respectively. Finally, there are also a pair of faculty-led symposiums to check out, beginning with the <a href="https://www.awaplusd.org/" target="_blank">Association for Women in Architecture and Design</a> presentation on March 26 and ending with Conversations About Buildings and Food with faculty members Scrap Marshall and Paulette Singley on April 19.</p>

<p>Events begin on Friday, September 15, in the school’s Wedge Gallery with a lecture from ceramicists Claudia V. Solórzano and Courtney Cho. On September 19, <a href="https://archinect.com/uclaaud" target="_blank">UCLA</a> doctoral candidate Alexa Vaughn will deliver the lecture ‘<em>DeafScape / Design with Disabled People Now</em>’ at 6pm in the Ahmanson Main Space. She will be followed by Kevin Sherrod’s ‘<em>Color Commentary</em>’ lecture at 7 p.m on October 20. Sherrod will be joined by <a href="https://archinect.com/demar.matthews" target="_blank">DeMar Matthews</a> and <a href="https://archinect.com/seanjoyner" target="_blank">Sean Joyner</a> on the same day for a discussion that takes place in Ahmanson an hour before. </p>

Described by the institution as an “inspiring leader and designer, as well as a passionate advocate of design education,” Flood’s appointment is effective as of December 1, 2022.</p>

<p>The Angelo Donghia Foundation is part of the renowned home furnishings company Donghia Inc., founded by the late American interior designer Angelo Donghia. The award will be used over the course of three years for a Senior Studio program for Interior Design students and help fund "fieldwork study expenses," allowing students to gain hands-on experience during their final year of study. </p>

For this year's 2022 edition, the JSI presents James Florio with the prestigious <a href="https://bustler.net/news/tags/julius-shulman-institute/19701/7293/livia-corona-benjamin-wins-2019-julius-shulman-photography-excellence-award" target="_blank">Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award</a>.</p>
<p>Florio's photographic works capture the intimate details of the built environment in nature and within cityscapes. Many of his past works and projects document how time, nature, and climate impact architecture and landscapes. While the photographs shown here primarily highlight his latest work with <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/67675/ensamble-studio" target="_blank">Ensamble Studio</a>, other projects such as the <a href="https://jamesflorio.com/galleries/78" target="_blank">Cervantes Theatre</a>, <a href="https://jamesflorio.com/galleries/162" target="_blank">Exeter Library</a>, and <a href="https://jamesflorio.com/galleries/2" target="_blank">Gio Ponti Denver Art Museum</a> exhibit Florio's eye for investigating structure, materials, texture, and shadow from a macro to micro-scale.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://woodbury.edu/program/school-of-architecture/programs/bachelor-of-science-in-construction-management/" target="_blank"><strong>Bachelor of Science in Construction Management</strong></a> program teaches students to transform the built environment by building sustainably. <p>After five years as the Dean of <a href="https://archinect.com/woodbury" target="_blank">Woodbury School of Architecture</a>, architect and academic <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/949686/ingalill-wahlroos-ritter" target="_blank">Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter</a> announced this Monday morning that she will leave her position. Wahlroos-Ritter's <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150010185/ingalill-wahlroos-ritter-appointed-as-dean-of-woodbury-university-s-school-of-architecture" target="_blank">appointment as Dean began on June 1, 2017</a>. Since then, she has acted as a force in elevating the program and carry on with its mission to prepare students for careers in architecture. </p>
<p>Along with her experience as a practicing architect and facades specialist, she has also taught at other architecture institutions like <a href="https://archinect.com/sciarc" target="_blank">SCI-Arc</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/1544387/cornell-university" target="_blank">Cornell</a>, and the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/299/university-college-london-ucl" target="_blank">Bartlett</a>. This comes as part of the UN's 58th Session of the Commission for Social Development. According to Woodbury, Ingalill will be presenting the college's <em>Housing+ Initiative,</em> a year long program of lectures, exhibitions, and studio inquiries focused on the issue of housing. The presentation will include a discussion of three case studies meant to provide examples of the importance of partnerships and how alliances can help fuel impactful design solutions.</p>
<p>The three case studies include practical issues that Woodbury students are currently tackling:</p>

<p>An architecture program should empower students to ask questions, reframe new problems and challenge the status quo. <a href="https://archinect.com/woodbury" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Woodbury School of Architecture</a> (WSoA) is doing this by rethinking the student experience to better prepare our graduates for an ever-evolving professional world. With programs such as the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/855400/ipal" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure</a> (IPAL), the Agency for Civic Engagement (ACE), the Real Estate Development (RED) program, and studio partnerships with professional offices, WSoA prepares students for a profession that they themselves will transform.</p>

It’s very rarely the idea generator. I think most practitioners traditionally came from a comfortable or upper-middle-class. It’s the Jeffersonian ideal: the gentleman designer. Architects in this country tend to have clients who are in the upper income level. And I think that has really been a problem. Our students, many of them, come from underserved communities.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Back in July, Archinect featured Woodbury's new dean, Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, as a part of the <a href="https://archinect.com/features/tag/378110/deans-list" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Deans List</a> series, in <a href="https://archinect.com/features/article/150016816/the-future-belongs-to-woodbury-an-interview-with-ingalill-wahlroos-ritter-the-university-s-brand-new-dean" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">an interview about the importance of economic diversity and the school's commitment to egalitarian and practical education</a>. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/gw/gw2y48su5v2i42cw.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>School of Architecture Dean <a href="http://archinect.com/woodbury/release/woodbury-school-of-architecture-s-norman-millar-elected-acsa-president" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Norman Millar</a>, who previously taught at <a href="http://archinect.com/sciarc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">SCI-Arc</a>, <a href="http://archinect.com/ucla" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">UCLA</a>, Pasadena Art Center and was active on both the San Diego and Los Angeles campuses of <a href="http://archinect.com/woodbury" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Woodbury</a>, succumbed to pancreatic cancer on April 14. He was 62 years old. Named "Educator of the Year" in 2014 by the AIA|LA and elected as President of the <a href="https://www.acsa-arch.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA)</a> in 2012, Millar's legacy extended not only to his pragmatic pedagogy, but his dedication to fostering a culture of warmth and joy among his students. According to a statement released by Woodbury, he once said that “I exited architecture school with the intention of making good buildings, and discovered that teaching expanded my passion by fostering it in students."</p>
