<p>The Swiss firm returned to its <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150274182/seoul-s-newest-art-space-opens-in-a-triangular-concrete-shape-from-herzog-de-meuron" target="_blank">debut Korean design</a> with an <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/8401/augmented-reality" target="_blank">augmented reality</a> exhibition titled <em>Exploring SongEun Art Space</em> that uses physical and digital models, drawings, sections, and printed images to give visitors a real insider's perspective on the creation and inner workings of the new 11-story museum.</p>

According to the museum, which was first established in 1879 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, "the exhibition proposes to discover how architects fit into the decorative arts, through the design of furniture, objects and lighting of architects."</p>

Artistic Directors Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, of the LA-based firm <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/4256960/johnston-marklee" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Johnston Marklee</a>, selected 140 architects and designers from 20 countries to participate. Among the vast number of attendees the biennial also boasts engagement of more than 10,000 students. </p>
<p>Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced, "The second <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/4611/chicago" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Chicago</a> Architecture Biennial reinforced Chicago's reputation as the vanguard of architectural, art and design innovation on the national and international stage". <br></p>
<p>Offering over 273 public programs, the event featured exhibitions by the Alphawood Foundation, Graham Foundation, Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The Biennial will return September 19, 2019 and run through January 5, 2020, again in line with EXPO CHICAGO. </p>

Photos, models and floor plans included in the museum exhibit show handsome brick buildings — with towers, high ceilings, open space and river views.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Washington's <a href="http://archinect.com/news/tag/136078/national-building-museum" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">National Building Museum</a> features an exhibit that tells the story of architecture of St. Elizabeths or, as originally named upon its opening in 1855, the Government Hospital for the Insane. </p>
<p>Started by Dorothea Dix, the 19th century reformer who fought for the facility to represent healthier standards for <a href="http://archinect.com/news/tag/122656/mental-health" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mental health</a> treatment, the history of the federally-operated hospital bears traces of America's changing healthcare system, evolving theories of how to care for the mentally ill, as well as the later reconfiguration of the campus as a federal workplace and mixed-use urban development.</p>

Far from the antiseptic tedium that characterizes so many architecture events these days, the second iteration of One-Night Stand LA, "<a href="http://archinect.com/features/article/149942961/getting-in-the-mood-for-one-night-stand-la-2-the-rendezvous" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Rendezvous</a>", was a raucous affair and all the better for it.</p><p>Beer flowed from the bar-cum-installation designed and staffed by Happy Hour Agency, a creative agency that hosts a “conceptual cocktail pop-up” every few months in the Highland Park neighborhood. As you waited in line for a drink (or a tube of alcoholic toothpaste), a harlequin face would appear from a hole in the wall and grin at you.</p><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/jz/jzyhgu6101oh3egm.jpg"></p><p>Just down the hall, a major highlight was the installation by Jennifer Bonner and <a href="http://archinect.com/features/article/125518443/touching-base-with-volkan-alkanoglu" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Volkan Alkanoglu</a>, which comprised an “architectural crime scene” replete with taped off floor plans, number tags and description cards. But how can we produce or maintain this position?</p></em><br /><br /><p><em>The Other Architect</em>, an expansive exhibition that considers "architecture’s potential to identify the urgent issues of our time" through twenty-three case studies from the 1960s to the present, opens tomorrow at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal.<br><br>Curated by Giovanna Borasi, the exhibition looks at various groups that have sought to critically intervene in the architectural profession, as well as to mobilize architectural thinking towards an expanded field. If the "normal architect" works within established conditions and using a defined toolset, these "other architects" developed (or borrowed) new methodologies, experimented formally and conceptually, and sought alternative organizational structures.<br><br><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/g3/g3ijcnoxjf5gxvu5.jpg"><br><br>Architecture witnessed a proliferation of radical experiments beginning in the mid-20th century, resulting in outputs in a variety of a media, such as pamphlets, manifestos, videos, questionnaires, and books. Visitors to the recent Piece by Piece: Renzo Piano Building Workshop at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai were engaged in the evolution of the famous architect’s key works through multi-media presentations. Various study models made of wood, foam, morphed plastic, and even pantyhose provided insight into the limitless and unpredictable avenues of the architectural creative process.
