Educator and historian John Beardsley selected to curate inaugural Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize

The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) has named arts curator and landscape educator John Beardsley as the inaugural curator for the forthcoming Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize.

The prize, which is set to be awarded for the first time in 2021 and will come with a $100,000 cash award as well as the resources for conducting two years' worth of "public engagement activities," was launched in 2019 by TCLF.

The prize is named after Canadian landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, a designer of dozens of widely acclaimed works, including the birch tree-filled 4,900-square-foot lobby garden located at the base of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop-designed New York Times Building in Manhattan.

The Graham Foundation awards over $560,000 in Grants to Individuals

Twice a year, the Graham Foundation issues a series of significant grants, first to individuals and then to organizations. The Foundation has just released the list of recipients of the 2017 Grants to Individuals, totaling over $560,000 divided amongst 72 projects.

"Many of our grantees this year are exploring the agency of design," states Graham Foundation director Sarah Herda. "They are testing the limits of conventional practice to make new work that directly engages the social and political dimensions of the designed environment."

Medellín wins 2016 Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2016 is conferred on Medellín, the second largest city in Colombia after the capital Bogotá. The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is a bi-annual award give to a city to honor "outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of liveable, vibrant and sustainable urban communities around the world."

Organized by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Centre for Liveable Cities, the prize comes with a $300,000 check written by the Keppel Corporation.

RIBA launches new International Prize for world's best new building, Richard Rogers to chair Grand Jury

RIBA is establishing their own award for the world's best new building of the year, naming it the RIBA International Prize. Launched today, the International Prize will be awarded to the building that best "demonstrate[s] visionary, innovative thinking and excellence of execution, whilst making a distinct contribution to its users and to its physical context," regardless of style, scheme type, and budget. According to RIBA, the International Prize was created for "the general advancement of Civil architecture", as stated in their 1837 charter.

Registered architects around the world can send submissions until the February 9 deadline. For the first edition of the prize, submitted buildings must have been completed within the past three years (Jan. 1, 2013 - Feb. 1, 2016). Afterward, the prize will be awarded to a building completed within 2 years.

Dominique Perrault to receive 2015 Praemium Imperiale Arts Award for architecture

Dominique Perrault is the 2015 architecture laureate for the prestigious Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award, as announced by the Japan Art Association today. Bestowed by the Japan Art Association since 1988, the award celebrates the association's 100th anniversary and honors the late Prince Takamatsu, who was a patron for 58 years and had faithful commitment to the arts.

The Praemium Imperiale recognizes lifetime achievement in the arts, and its list of winners include 134 legendary cultural figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. The prize also comes with a cash prize of 15 milion yen (approx. US$122,000). As expected, the list of architecture laureates is of a high caliber, including Steven Holl, David Chipperfield, Henning Larsen, Ricardo Legorreta, Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid, and Peter Zumthor, to name a few.

David Adjaye named as recipient of 2016 McDermott Award at MIT

With a few high-profile projects and a retrospective in Chicago already in tow, David Adjaye was announced by the Council for the Arts at MIT as the 2016 recipient of the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts. First established by the Council in 1974 as a way to honor rising creative talent, the award distinguishes individuals whose body of work shows strong potential for producing more notable work in the future.

In addition to the $100,000 — which represents an investment toward the recipient's future creative work — the prize includes an artist residency at MIT for the spring 2016 term. During his residency, Adjaye will publicly present his body of work, give a keynote lecture, and interact with students and faculty. The residency aims to provide the recipient an opportunity to develop mutually enlightening connections with the MIT community, and have access to the school's cutting-edge research and creativity.

Frank Gehry Awarded Getty Medal For "Changing the Course of Architecture"

Gehry becomes the first designer or artist to win the award that the Getty launched in 2013. The prize – a bronze medal with a profile portrait of J. Paul Getty – recognizes lifetime contributions in various art-related fields that are part of the Getty’s mission, including philanthropy, art-history research, archeology and conservation of art and architecture, as well as art-making.

Frank Gehry can now add the Getty Medal to his collection of esteemed prizes, including the Pritzker, the Order of Canada, and the AIA Gold Medal. The Getty Trust announced the awarding of the medal to Gehry, with an official dinner to follow on September 28, 2015. The award seems fitting for a man who, while he has never been comfortable calling himself an artist, last year stated that "I don't beg for work. I don't have publicists. I'm not waiting for people to call me. I work with clients who have respect for the art of architecture."

As J. Paul Getty Trust President and CEO James Cuno noted, "There have been very few individuals in all of history who have changed the course of architecture, and Frank is one of them. He effectively reinvented architecture with his use of new technologies in the design of beautiful and iconic buildings. And architecture will never be the same as a result.”
