University of Seville architecture professor develops new mathematical concept that can impact 'engineering and construction of buildings'

During the construction of the university’s new engineering building, Cabeza-Lainez found that calculating the area of a roof with straight lines resting on a semicircle was impossible just by using pi. After 30 years of research, [he] published a paper about his discovery in ScienceDirect [...] Both articles present his proposal of a number psi (Ψ), with a value of 3.140923, close to pi but which can be applied to a versatile geometric form that he calls an antisphere.

According to El Pais, mathematician and architect Dr. Cabeza-Lainez had to develop his own proprietary calculation software in order to prove the equation. He has also published a book on solar light transfer and says the application of psi in various forms can lower costs associated with energy consumption by 50%.

British architectural historian Gavin Stamp has died at age 69

Gavin Stamp, the architectural historian, who has died aged 69, was “Piloti” who wrote the “Nooks and Corners” column in Private Eye magazine; a television presenter of great charm and humour; a conservationist who personally saved one of the finest Arts and Crafts buildings in London; a photographer, draughtsman and writer of prodigious talent.

The architecture community lost historian, writer and broadcaster Gavin Stamp on December 30 2017 due to prostate cancer. Stamp had an immense impact on British architecture and authored several important architectural history books. He was also a television series presenter, co-founder of the Twentieth Century Society, and a key player in the Victorian Society.

Architecture majors work the hardest in college, study reveals

A study conducted by Indiana University's National Study of Student Engagement reveals that architecture majors spend the most time outside of their classes studying, beating out even engineers. On average, an architecture major will spend 22.2 hours a week working on projects and generally furrowing their brows, while those head-in-the-clouds chemical engineers spend only 19.66 hours a week. Before taking home the "Living on Ramen in the Studio" prize, however, it's worth noting that pretty much every major has to spend some time outside of classes studying: even those undertaking PR + advertising spend an average of 12.17 hours in exterior academic pursuit, according to The Tab.

ASCA Launches "#IMadeThat" Campaign For Architectural Students and Schools

As part of a larger communications outreach campaign, The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture has launched a new online sharing portal called IMadeThat.com. A kind of HootSuite for architectural students and faculty, the portal collects all Vine, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter posts tagged #imadethat about academic architectural projects into one place.

The campaign hopes to form connections between existing and potential students, as well as provide a more detailed understanding of what, exactly, constitutes the study of architecture. Like the vast majority of social media undertakings, the scope of the project would not have been feasible or at least easily accomplished without the aid of technology. The real-time, public postings will enable commentary on sketches, works-in-progress, and completed thesis projects from a much larger community than an in-room crit panel or roving professor.
