Field of RIBA London Award winners spans from housing to infrastructure to Westminster Abbey to the Royal Opera House

An eclectic range of project types is represented in this year's RIBA London Awards which were just announced by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The 47 winning projects were selected from 83 shortlisted projects published in March and feature new work by some of the UK's heavy hitters, including Heatherwick Studio, David Chipperfield Architects, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, dRMM, and Grimshaw.

"2019 winning projects range from a one-bedroom private house which spans the length of two private garages to one of the busiest train stations in the country," commented RIBA London Director, Dian Small. "They also include several significant public sector housing projects, beautifully-designed school extensions, state of the art office buildings and exquisite conservation projects, which breathe new life into some of London’s greatest treasures."

RIBA announces 85 shortlisted projects for 2017 London Awards

RIBA revealed a hefty shortlist for the 2017 London Awards today. Starting out with 215 hopeful submissions, the jury picked 85 to advance in the regional competition, including projects designed by David Chipperfield, AHMM, WilkinsonEyre, Coffey Architects, Fletcher Priest Architects, Grimshaw, Haworth Tompkins, Zaha Hadid Architects, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, and many more notable contenders.

In the coming weeks, one of the five London juries working across the West, North, East, South East and South West areas of the city will visit all the shortlisted projects for further evaluation. Here's the full shortlist:

See the RIBA 2016 London Awards winners, Wilton's Music Hall named regional Building of the Year

RIBA revealed an array of projects as the winners of the 2016 London Awards during a recent ceremony. First launched in 1966, the yearly competition distinguishes some of the area's top-notch design projects in various architectural categories. While winning in the competitive London Awards is already a great honor, they're just the beginning of RIBA's yearlong awards cycle. Now, the London Awards winners will move on to compete in the RIBA National Awards.

Herzog & de Meuron named 2015 RIBA Jencks Award winners

Herzog & de Meuron have the widest approach to architecture varying their style for each job. In this sense they epitomise the global search for an architecture of pluralism, one flexible enough for very different cultures...The high quality of the work is as notable as the wit; the amount of production as much as its personality. -RIBA President Stephen Hodder

Herzog & de Meuron, whose works include the recently approved yet controversial Tour Triangle in Paris and the redevelopment of Berlin's Tacheles cultural center, received the 2015 RIBA Jencks Award for being a practice "that has recently made a major contribution internationally to both the theory and practice of architecture." In a statement by RIBA President Stephen Hodder, he noted that "the contribution to our profession from Jacques and Pierre is constantly profound."

The award, which includes a £1,000 pound honorarium and the opportunity to deliver a lecture to RIBA chaired by Mr. Charles Jencks, will be officially presented on October 29th in London.

RIBA celebrated the winners of the 2015 London Awards, which highlights top-notch architectural design within the London capital region. Starting from 159 entries down to a final shortlist of 67 projects, 38 projects won awards during a recent evening ceremony at the National Theatre. A few of the winners scored extra in receiving London Special Awards, including the RIBA London Building of the Year Award.

The regional London Awards are considered an honor, but they're just the start of a series of RIBA competitions. Regional winners will be considered for the RIBA National Award. Once the National winners are announced in June, those winners will finally advance to compete for the coveted RIBA Stirling Prize for best building of the year.
