Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is setting up shop in New York this fall

In anticipation of scaling up its recent slate of work within the country, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is said to be opening an office in New York this fall –representing the firm’s first expansion into an American market in its illustrious 42-year history.

Associate partner Georgina Robleddo, who has been with Rogers Stirk Harbour since 2003, will head the new office. The firm, which has initiated projects in Philadelphia and Manhattan in the past few years, says it has thus far remained “cautious of overtrading in unfamiliar markets” but “expect that the percentage of turnover coming from outside of the UK will continue to grow.”

As commercial and office real estate markets continue to be upended by societal shifts touched off by the COVID-19 pandemic, some economists are looking to these now under-utilized spaces as potential avenues for bringing additional housing supplies online in American cities.

A recent report from nonprofit think tank RAND Corporation explains that 40% of respondents to a recent survey by the firm indicated that they are working from home, a figure that paints an uncertain picture for the millions of square feet of office spaces these workers are no longer utilizing. The report explains that many office spaces are grouped in specialized central business districts, where they draw from regional populations in order to fill their cubicles and open offices areas. Kohn Pedersen Fox breaks ground on terraced Silicon Valley office development

Global architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) has broken ground on Platform 16, a new 1.2 million-square-foot office and commercial complex slated for a site next door to Google's forthcoming Transit-oriented village in Downtown San Jose, California.

According to a press release published by the firm, "Platform 16 offers access to outdoor space on each floor, and will include active pedestrian plazas, expansive floorplates, and 15-foot floor-to-floor heights, prioritizing the experiences of diverse occupants."

Additionally, the building's highly articulated facades are crafted to "create a sense of depth and texture with a faceted expression that modulates their scale and evokes an organic composition," a design that, according to the architects, reflects "a nod to the project’s sustainability" attributes. KAAN Architecten completes a new base for the Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay in France

The new Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (ISMO) was recently completed by Dutch firm KAAN Architecten. The institute moved into their new building as part of the Université Paris-Saclay's future campus in Orsay, France.

Located about 12 miles outside of Paris in Plateau de Saclay, the science institute is a grouping of physics laboratories, an educational building, housing, offices, and a reception center for international researchers.

Open offices are closing people off from each other more, according to this recent study

Bernstein hopes the research will offer empirical evidence that will help managers consider the possible trade-offs of moving to an open office plan. In seeking a lower cost per square foot, they buy into the idea that it will also lead to more collaboration, even if it’s not clear that’s true. “I don’t blame the architects,” he said. “But I do think we spend more of our time thinking about how to design workspaces based on the observer’s perspective” — the manager — “rather than the observed.”

If you're not a fan of open offices, you now have some empirical evidence in your favor. In two field studies recently published by Ethan S. Bernstein and Stephen Turban, they found that face-to-face interaction decreased by approximately 70 percent in both cases, while digital communication increased.

“In short, rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM,” the researchers write in the abstract of the study.

City of London’s One Poultry to become design-led creative office

Development manager General Projects, along with architects BuckleyGrayYeoman, have been commissioned to re-establish the building as a Grade A HQ office and retail building, thoughtfully designed around the evolving needs of today’s creative sector businesses, whilst celebrating and reconstituting the building’s original splendour as a masterpiece of modern British architecture.

One Poultry, completed almost two decades ago in 1998, is both an iconic and striking building, located above Bank underground station in the heart of the City, with neighbours including the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England. Recently awarded Grade II* listing, One Poultry, with its characteristic, colourful material usage and prominent positioning, is truly a landmark building. Recent exhibitions, books, and talks have focused on the history of this project; of the start of the site, and the turbulent unbuilt plans of the previous Mies van der Rohe design.

BuckleyGrayYeoman's scheme, which will deliver 110,000sqft of inspirational Grade A offices, will maintain the solid, inspirational, postmodernist style with commissioned artwork, generous facilities, and ‘gallery-style volumes’ including ceilings soaring to almost four metres.

Inside the MVRDV House, the firm's new family home-style office

MVRDV settled into their new office headquarters inside the remodeled Het Industriegebouw, nestled in the heart of Rotterdam. Now dubbed by the firm as the MVRDV House, the building was originally designed by iconic Dutch architect Hugh Maaskant in 1952. The new 2,400 square-meter interior is modeled like a family home, filled with ample working and gathering spaces that reflect the “work hard, play hard” balance many firms strive for in their office's design.

Now with 140 employees based in Rotterdam, “[t]he expanding MVRDV family needed a new house,” says MVRDV co-founder Jacob van Rijs. MVRDV's new office has “everything that [a] home requires, a living room, a dining room, a sofa for the whole house to sit together,” he described. Surrounded by various creative start-ups and design firms, MVRDV believes they fit right in their new neighborhood.
