Built in 1932, the bridge held an iconic status in the collective imagination of the city, particularly due to its easily-recognizable silhouette, formed by two swooping, steel arches. Now officials report that one of these arches will be preserved and placed somewhere in the new, 8-acre park that will soon be beneath the new viaduct, which is designed by Michael Maltzan and features ribbon-like, Y-shaped columns. The city also gave away around 1,000 pieces of the bridge as commemorative objects.

Once the lifeline of the city and, before that, the Tongva people, the river was paved in the early 20th century following a series of devastating floods and then – at least according to a well-worn narrative – forgotten by the public.

After years of potamic amnesia, or so the story goes, Los Angeles suddenly remembered its river, finding in the thin stream a possible answer to both its growing thirst and perpetual identity crises. Now, nobody seems to talk about much else besides “our forgotten river”. In a sense, the LA River is the ecological inverse of Kim Kardashian: famous for being not-famous.

Part of the museum’s ongoing lecture series inCOLLABORATION, Maltzan’s talk focused on the relationship his projects hold to their infrastructural, urban and social contexts, as well as his conception of the role of contemporary architecture in the future of American cities.

The talk was divided into three categories: housing, civic or landscape design, and infrastructure. Yet as Maltzan moved from one to the next, he noted the conceptual permeability of these categories. On the one hand, he asserted that the movement between a house and an infrastructure project, for example, can be radically divergent. This is a fact with which Michael Maltzan Architecture has become intimately acquainted as they have greatly expanded their reach both programmatically and geographically in recent years. On t...
