Pedro&Juana's immersive jungle setting selected for MoMA PS1's 2019 Young Architects Program exhibition

The Mexico City-based practice Pedro&Juana has been selected as the winner of MoMA PS1's 2019 Young Architects Program. Run by Ana Paula Ruiz Galindo & Mecky Reuss, the duo's winning entry, titled Hórama Rama, beat out proposals by fellow finalists Matter Design, TO, Oana Stănescu and Akane Moriyama, and Low Design Office.

Finalists announced for 2019 MoMA/PS1 Young Architects Program

MoMA PS1 has announced the five finalists who will compete for the 2019 edition of its annual Young Architects Program. Challenging emerging architectural talent to develop creative proposals for a temporary summer outdoor installation, the highly coveted commission serves as a stage and shelter for the museum's seasonal Warm Up concert series. Architects are also asked to address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling, with their installation.

To choose an architectural studio, over 100 nominators from across North America are asked to submit a young office for consideration. Previous talent tapped by the program has included SHoP Architects, Andrés Jaque/Office for Political Innovation, The Living/David Benjamin and SO-IL.

Dream the Combine's 'Hide & Seek" installation to provide interactive setting for Warm Up Summer Music Series at MoMA PS1

The eagerly-awaited, annual Warm Up series of concerts and events has launched, with an interactive setting provided by Minneapolis-based practice Dream the Combine, winners of this year’s MoMA PS1 Young Architect’s Program competition. Titled Hide & Seek, the winning installation, featuring a large-scale, network of mirrors, will activate the courtyard through September, playing host to more than 75 musical artists.

This year's construction, done in collaboration with Clayton Binkley of ARUP, features nine intersecting elements sprawled across the entire MoMA PS1 courtyard. Scriptive elements, ranging from trampolines to runways, invite visitors into performance and establish platforms for improvisation while the horizontal structures contain interactive mirrors, that move in the wind or with human touch.

Every summer, the winning design of MoMA's PS1 Young Architects Program helps set the mood for the museum's Warm Up music festivities, providing shade, seating, water and atmosphere. Installed in the museum's outdoor courtyard, the YAP-winning design must also address issues related to the environment and sustainability.

The finalists for 2017 are as follows: Bureau Spectacular / Jimenez Lai; Ania Jaworska; Office of III: Sean Canty, Ryan Golenberg and Stephanie Lin; Jenny E. Sabin; SCHAUM/SHIEH: Rosalyne Shieh and Troy Schaum.

In order to get this far, the firms first had to be among the ~30 nominated to the YAP by deans of architecture schools and editors of architecture publications. A dinosaur, a flying saucer, a rock garden: Parasite 2.0's installation for YAP MAXXI

Most Americans know MoMA’s Young Architect’s Program (YAP) through its annual summer festival in the MoMA PS1 courtyard in Long Island City, but they also have an impressive international program. For the Roman edition of the program, this year’s winner, studio Parasite 2.0, installed a giant green dinosaur, a neon flying saucer, and other peculiar objects in the sunlit courtyard of the Zaha Hadid-designed MAXXI Museum.

Entitled MAXXI Temporary School: the museum is a school. A school is a battleground, the installation is composed of three sets made of wood, recycled rubber and metal. One of the sets has two walls rising from a star-shaped podium accessible by a tunnel. Another comprises a rock garden, a rainbow, and the flying saucer. In the third, a dinosaur spout water alongside images of the planet Saturn and Easter Island moan.

The Mexico-city based firm Escobedo Solíz Studio, founded in 2011 by Lazbent Pavel Escobedo and Andres Solíz, has been announced as the winner of MoMA and MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program (YAP).

The annual competition (now in its 17th year) is aimed at emerging architectural talent, giving young designers the chance to exhibit in an interactive, urban setting during the PS1’s summer programming. As stipulated within the competition, the winner's design must provide shade, seating and water, and “address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.” Prior winners have included Andrés Jaque (2015), The Living (2014), CODA (2013), MOS (2009), and WORKac (2008), among others.

For nearly two decades, the Young Architect's Program (YAP) has brought both young and established talent to MoMA PS1's courtyard to form a welcome space for overheated crowds that often interact with the work during the institution's popular Warm Up series [...] So what happens to the pavilions and their creators once the DJs pack up their gear, the throngs of people leave, and the summer is over?

Artnet news looked at the afterlife of some of YAP pavilions that have graced the MoMA PS1 courtyard in Queens. Here's a quick summary of some of the featured anecdotes:

SHoP Architects "Dunescape," 2000

SHoP Architects, the firm behind the recently-inaugurated Barclays Center in Brooklyn, designed "Dunescape" comprising cedar structures that you could climb over and in. At the end of the summer, the wood was donated to a trade school where it used for woodworking practice.

Winner of this year's MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, Andrés Jaque of the Office for Political Innovation, joins us on the podcast this week to discuss his winning design, COSMO. In a continued thread from last year's YAP, The Living's "Hy-Fi", Jaque's COSMO focuses on issues of sustainability and ecology – its main element is a series of pipes that will purify water with biological treatments.

Before winning the YAP, Jaque's office already had a piece in MoMA's permanent collection, IKEA Disobedients (2011), the museum's first "architectural performance" acquisition. COSMO will be installed from June 23 through September 7.
