University of Illinois launches center for autonomous construction research

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Grainger College of Engineering has announced the creation of a research and development center dedicated to autonomous construction technologies. The initiative, funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers, will engage with research on self-driving construction vehicles and their integration into modern construction practices.

The Center for Autonomous Construction in Manufacturing at Scale (CACMS) will delve into prominent challenges in autonomous construction, including control systems, artificial intelligence applications, system architecture, and advanced manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing. Vehicles ranging from traditional wheeled vehicles to tracked units will also undergo testing and development at the center, which will also hold a fleet of self-driving cars.

Final design for Discovery Partners Institute headquarters presented to Chicago Plan Commission

The Chicago Plan Commission was presented the final design for the Discovery Partners Institute’s new headquarters at the 78 as the development looks to get final site plan approval.

The OMA and Jacobs-designed project is proposed for a one-acre parcel anchoring the south end of the upcoming The 78 mega-development, a mixed-use innovation district set to rise along a 62-acre stretch of disused rail yards. The headquarters is expected to be the first building to begin construction at the development. Standing eight stories and spanning approximately 213,000 square feet, the scheme will feature office, classroom, lab, and event spaces for the University of Illinois System’s Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) and its partners.

The building will be composed of a series of stacked volumes enclosed with a dome-like glass and steel form. OMA/Jacobs selected to design the University of Illinois' new DPI innovation hub in Chicago

A joint team of OMA and Jacobs has been selected to design a new 200,000-square-foot headquarters for the University of Illinois System's Discovery Partners Institute in Chicago, the state and Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on Thursday.

The multi-year project will transform a disused 62-acre former yard site as the first construction in the larger The 78 Innovation District that is meant to provide a high-tech connection between Chinatown to the South Loop.

Pritzker says its “futuristic design” matches the state’s ambition to create a hub for innovation downtown on land donated to the state by Related Companies’ Midwest operation. Beyond the typical economic stimulus components provided by the project, the development will support a host of K-12 education and entrepreneurship programs, continued wastewater monitoring, and a hodgepodge of other collaborative business ventures geared toward the tech industry.

Celebrating 140 years of women in architecture at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Believe it or not, female representation and leadership within academic architectural institutions have come along way over the last 100 years. To highlight this progress, the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is paying homage to previous female graduates who earned a degree in architecture from the school, starting with Mary Louisa Page in 1878. Page was he first woman to graduate from architecture school in North America; The university began offering architecture courses a decade earlier in 1868.

Now, in 2019, the university aims to recognize the contributions its female graduates have made to the architectural profession by hosting a Women's Reunion and Symposium from September 26th to the 28th. In addition to the symposium, the school will host an exhibition titled Revealing Presence: Women in Architecture at the University of Illinois 1874-2019 that highlights the work created by some of these graduates.

A short back story. Towards the end of the school year, Julien De Smedt came to UIC to lecture. I was fortunate enough to be able to interview him for a forthcoming Fresh Meat article. Through the conversation, talk of short films came up. This led on to another conversation and then to something else (i don't remember all the details I'll have to review the recording). Long story short, I was asked to come to Copenhagen to work on a small Project for JDS.

Zago as many of you may know is a professor at Sci-Arc, Nicholson is at the School of the Art Institute (not to be confused with AI, the online/art school/thing)and Rob Livesey, and Jose Oubrerie come from Ohio State. As I understand it Oubrerie is a disciple of Corb.
