AIA moves one step forward in approval of Equity in Architecture resolution

A total of 4,117 AIA delegates largely voted in favor for the widely talked about Resolution 15-1, titled "Equity in Architecture", during the Election at the 2015 AIA National Convention in Atlanta last month. Sponsored by AIA San Francisco and the AIA California Council as a response to architecture's long tradition of gender and racial disparity, the resolution calls for the Institute to take definitive measures to strengthen the presence of underrepresented demographics especially in membership, firm leadership and ownership in the profession. The Resolution was drafted by Rosa Sheng, AIASF Assistant Treasurer and Equity by Design Committee Chair; Julia Donoho, co-founder of the Julia Morgan Foundation; and AIA National Vice President Frank Pitts.

NCARB will phase out the "intern" title

The great intern-titling debate has been resolved – "intern" is getting the boot.

This Thursday at the AIA National Convention in Atlanta, NCARB President Dale McKinney announced that NCARB's Board of Directors had unanimously agreed to "discontinue the use of the word intern, intern-architect, or any other regulatory "title" describing those pursuing licensure." The "sunsetting" of the term "intern" was proposed by the Future Title Task Force, a committee of interns and licensed architects, who devoted a year of research and discussion to evaluating the IDP program and specifically, the naming debate around the word "intern" and the different progressive phases around licensure. Under this proposal, there exists no specific title for those seeking licensure. NCARB will resolve "Intern Architect" title debate at AIA National Convention

Back in August of 2014, NCARB began reevaluating whether the title "Intern Architect" was an appropriate label for those pursuing licensure. Currently used to call an architect experienced enough to be working towards licensure, but not yet licensed, "Intern Architect" is fraught by the associations around the status of an "intern" in most professional cultures, as someone not inherently experienced and near the absolute bottom of an employment hierarchy.

Now, NCARB aims to settle the debate over the title in an announcement formally made at the AIA National Convention next week in Atlanta, Georgia. Culminating the efforts by NCARB's "Future Title Task Force" devoted to this issue, the announcement will not only mark changes in titling for the architecture profession, it will also set out new guidelines for US licensing boards.
