Archinect - News 2024-05-04T08:20:41-04:00 https://archinect.com/news/article/145210767/the-chicago-architecture-biennial-prepares-for-round-two-in-2017 The Chicago Architecture Biennial prepares for round two in 2017 Justine Testado 2016-01-07T19:33:00-05:00 >2016-01-07T21:03:02-05:00 <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/3z/3z9q0vntnww7tylt.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>Met with "unequivocal success", as described by Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago Architecture Biennial will be back in fall 2017.&nbsp;The Chicago Cultural Center had a bustling three months serving as the venue of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, "The State of the Art of Architecture", which ran from October 3-January 3.</p><p>While the content of the Biennial itself is <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/143437694/zaha-hadid-is-not-impressed-by-the-chicago-architecture-biennial" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">up for debate</a>, the event attracted&nbsp;over 500,000 attendees. Students, educators, architects, and the general public got to check out <a href="http://archinect.com/news/tag/658383/cutting-across" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">exhibitions</a>, full-scale installations like those from <a href="http://archinect.com/news/tag/539255/lakefront-kiosk-competition" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Lakefront Kiosk Competition</a>, and a slew of public programs.&nbsp;</p><p>There isn't much about the 2017 event just yet, but official dates, leadership, and the Biennial's theme will be revealed in the coming months. Launched in late 2014, the global competition invited architects to propose kiosk designs inspired by the Windy City and its Lake Michigan waterfront.</p><p>The winning proposal &mdash; in addition to <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/123067654/chicago-architecture-biennial-announces-three-lakefront-kiosk-teams-between-local-architecture-schools-international-firms" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">three commissioned kiosks</a> designed by architects in collaboration with students from local Chicago architecture schools &mdash; will be installed at the Biennial starting this October. Today, the Biennial announced the three partnerships -- between local Chicago architecture schools and international firms -- who will each envision an innovative kiosk design to be realized during the Biennial. A jury of architects, curators, and city representatives will select one winner to receive the BP Prize, which includes an honorarium for design development and a construction budget to realize the design.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The very first Chicago Architecture Biennial is gearing up for its run October 2015 - January 2016: themed "The State of the Art of Architecture", the biennial just announced its "Lakefront Kiosk Competition", to design a kiosk for use on Chicago's waterfront during and after the Biennial.</p><p>As stipulated in the <a href="http://chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/141218_CABLKC_PDF_Final.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">brief</a>, the kiosk must serve a commercial purpose during the summer season, and still function as "an&nbsp;iconic work of architecture that will attract visitors and enliven the lakefront year-round".
