Malta's chamber of architects lays out guidelines for development near ancient Megalithic temples

The chamber of architects has issued guidelines for its members working on projects close to Megalithic temples. “As professionals in the field of architecture and engineering, it is imperative that we approach the design and planning of development projects within the buffer zones of UNESCO World Heritage Sites with the utmost care and sensitivity,” the chamber said.

This is the first time Malta’s chamber of architects and civil engineers, Kamra tal-Periti (KTP) has introduced these types of rules for UNESCO buffer zones, areas around sites with legal and customary restrictions on their use and development to protect them. KTP’s directive lays out the limitations on developments that can be carried out within the buffer zones of Megalithic temples in Malta. It also provides guidance on how to develop in compliance with the guidelines.

KTP has required that only development consistent with the purpose and intent of the buffer zones and the UNESCO World Heritage Convention can be carried out within the buffer zones designated for the Megalithic temples. Development must also be of a scale and design that aligns with the international architectural and cultural heritage value of the temples and their buffer zones. A new study sheds light on pigeons' apparent disdain for modern architecture

The abundance of feral pigeons [...] is mostly affected by the presence of modern buildings with low abundance of pigeons found in areas where there is a preponderance of modern buildings. The study confirms the results of international studies which indicate that the densest populations of feral pigeons occur in historic town centres, as the old buildings provide ample nesting sites, while the high human population density of both locals and tourists in historic towns provides constant food

According to the authors, the Maltese study “lays the ground for further research on feral pigeon populations and their ecology in urban environments as well as contributing information for management programmes that are tailor-made to the local situation and circumstances.”

Rat populations are also barometers of recent changes to the built environment, such as outdoor dining and the increase in brownfield sites in some countries. Pigeons' risky lifestyles may nevertheless be a useful educational resource for children.

More in line with human activity, however, the study found that birds also apparently view parks as a source of “feeding opportunities and less stress.”

First look at Zaha Hadid Architects' Mercury Tower redevelopment in St. Julian's, Malta

Zaha Hadid Architects recently revealed their design for the new Mercury Tower development in the bustling Paceville district in St. Julian's, Malta. In response to Malta's growing tourism and hospitality industry, the project involves the renovation and redevelopment of the historic Mercury House site, which had been derelict for over 20 years.

The refurbishment of the Mercury House includes the preservation of its remaining facades that date back to 1903, as well as the reinstatement of its remaining historic interiors as gathering spaces for the new residential apartments and boutique hotel. The site also includes two underground vaults created during the Cold War.

With the Mercury House at its base, the project's new developments emerge from behind the house so that it can remain as a focal point. The developments include a large public piazza surrounded by cafes and shops, and most noticeably, a new 31-story apartment and hotel tower.
