Notre Dame’s plans for contemporary stained-glass windows spark cries of ‘vandalism’ in Paris

Plans for the contemporary replacement of some of the stained glass windows inside Notre Dame Cathedral’s damaged interior have sparked a considerable outcry from the public a year before the Parisian landmark is set to begin reopening in the wake of the destructive 2019 fire.

Calls for a new competition to design windows for six of Notre Dame’s seven south aisle side chapels has led to a petition signed by 120,000 people urging the French government to reconsider on grounds that they would distort the originality of architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s 19th-century expansion, according to a report from The Guardian.

The new window designs would replace what emerged from the catastrophe undamaged and are therefore considered important relics of the blaze by heritage experts and other conservation specialists. Charles Munger is back in the news after some insensitive comments made over the weekend re-entered the debate over windowless dormitories and student housing scarcity nationwide.

Yahoo! Finance is reporting on comments the would-be billionaire designer of the derided and then dropped megadormitory project at the University of California, Santa Barbara had in a podcast conversation hosted by MarketWatch.

“The world of architecture is a game of trade-offs,” Munger told the outlet. “You’ve got to get used to the fact that billionaires aren’t the most popular people in our society. I’d rather be a billionaire and not be loved by everybody than not have any money.”

Munger’s cynicism is certainly evocative of many insiders’ takes on the industry in its current state. The comments also betray a troublesome societal trend regarding the mental well-being of young people, especially as it relates to college life.

New York Mayor Eric Adams pitches a case for windowless apartment units in the city

Mayor Eric Adams opened a new window into his vision for building New York City out of the current housing crisis, with a riff on “dormitory” style accommodations [...] During a conversation on Monday at the Greene Space, New York Public Radio's live events venue, Adams said he wants to 'do a real examination' of the laws that require windows in bedrooms — a major tweak that could make it easier for developers to convert empty offices into apartments.

The Mayor’s comments in favor of window features found in Dormzilla-like residential design caught the ire of critics, who were quick to illustrate its potential fire hazards and physiological impacts. Adams’ suggestion seems a bit at odds with the city’s push to deliver better affordable housing with 40,000 office conversions and other measures, but are nevertheless in line with several of the recommendations for “flexible regulations“ attributed to the Adaptive Reuse Task Force proposed in December 2022.

According to Gothamist, Adams then also commended WeWork’s flawed housing development model and the widespread adaptation of single-room occupancy (or SROs) constructions that typically have windows but have been dwindling since being made illegal under New York City law in 1955.

A new prototype multilayered fluid window system devised by researchers at the University of Toronto may have the potential to be an effective tool in the push toward greater sustainability in the building industry, according to their research published in the national academy of sciences journal PNAS.

Munger Hall update: New report outlines 'safety hazards' in megadorm's design

A new independent review produced by a 13-member panel made up of faculty and community members at the University of California, Santa Barbara has outlined a host of health and safety risks inherent in the contested Munger Hall megadorm design proposal.

The report cited the need for Covid-safe ventilation techniques, safer egress routes, and the psychological toll taken on students as factors to be considered in a “robust redesign” that would follow the changes made previously in response to a torrent of community feedback. It also decried a lack of outside input early on.

“[A] majority of Panel members believes that such information could have averted the critical concerns raised by the current design,” the report stated. “Research and analysis weighed by this Panel reveal significant health and safety risks that are predictable enough, probable enough, and consequential enough that it would be unwise for UCSB to proceed without significant modifications to the design.”

The "anti-noise control window" is designed to stop urban sound pollution in its tracks

The system uses a microphone outside the window to detect the repeating sound waves of the offending noise source, which is registered by a computer controller. That in turn deciphers the proper wave frequency needed to neutralize the sound, which is transmitted to the array of speakers on the inside of the window frame.

A team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore led by Masaharu Nishimura and Bhan Lam have developed a prototype approach that can decrease the amount of urban noise that infiltrates a dwelling.

The grid of circular speakers is installed within the open window frame and filters out constant sounds of a certain frequency. It has yet to be perfected to block out sporadic and low-pitched sounds, however.

WindowSwap, a new website created by husband and wife duo Sonali Ranjit and Vaishnav Balasubramaniam, two Singapore-based creatives, allows users to look through the windows of people across the globe. According to The Stable, Ranjit said of the project:

After delays, the pizza-slice-shaped windows on the Little Caesars headquarters in Detroit are almost complete

After a year's delay, construction crews Monday were installing the final glass panels in on the upper floors of the new Little Caesars headquarters on Woodward Avenue near the Fox Theatre. Originally expected to be opened last summer, the building was delayed over an apparent problem with the unique pizza-slice wedges of glass that form the facade.

The SmithGroup-designed Little Caesar's headquarters in Detroit is finally continuing its construction progress, nearly a year after hiccups with the tower's pizza-shaped window installation delayed the project's completion.

Central Atlanta Library: debate over adding windows to 'dark' Marcel Breuer building

Drilling holes—for windows, granted—into famed architect Marcel Breuer’s final project could cost $1 million, and preservationists are peeved such plans are still on the drafting board. But despite community pushback, the window plans are still very much alive. Tuesday night, a crowd again convened at downtown’s Central Atlanta Library, a Breuer-designed Brutalist building, to argue against aspects of the $50 million plan to renovate the 38-year-old structure.

To drill or not to drill—that's at the center of a heated debate between the Atlanta–Fulton Public Library System, who would like to see additional windows to bring some natural light into their aging Marcel Breuer-designed Central Atlanta Library building, and preservationists, who insist that the concrete shell of the brutalist structure from 1980 must not be altered.

"What we’ve always heard about this building is it’s dark; it’s dingy; it’s dank, and the windows are a way to enliven this," Atlanta library director Gabriel Morley said about the building that once faced demolition not too long ago. "It’s a way to bring some inside out and some outside in."

Employees at Apple's new headquarters keep walking into its famed glass walls

The Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA, designed by Foster and Partners, was built with much glass—the building's exterior features the famed curved panels of safety glass while the interior is populated with work spaces, also made from glass. Well, apparently, the favored building material is starting to be a real pain as Apple employees keep bumping into the clear, spotless walls.

This is not the first time Apple's penchant for prioritizing aesthetics over functionality has posed a safety risk. This winter, their flagship store in Chicago, also designed by Foster, caused a snow-related safety hazard due to its thin, gutter-less, carbon fiber roof.

Let’s say you want to switch to solar—for ecological or economic reasons—but are a renter. Installing solar panels on your roof isn’t really an option unless you get permission from your landlord. Enter Solar Gaps, or photovoltaic solar blinds that can be installed easily, and temporarily, on any window. According to their Kickstarter, Solar Gaps can reduce your electricity bill by up to 70%

The smart blinds track the sun throughout the day and adjust their position accordingly. They can generate up to 100W-150W of renewable energy per 10 sq. ft. (≈ 1 m2) of a window, which can power three MacBooks. They also are still regular blinds, and so can reduce energy by shading the interior to lower AC costs. Moreover, the Solar Gaps integrate with existing smart home tech, like Google Home, and can be controlled with your smart phone.

Massive 'spine' skylight in Calatrava's WTC Oculus nears completion

Santiago Calatrava said the roof would open. And evidently it will. On Friday morning, a 5,700-pound glass panel was hoisted into place as a 355-foot-long operable skylight took final form in the Oculus pavilion of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, designed by Mr. Calatrava. Another panel went up in the afternoon. Those are among the last of 996 pieces of blast-resistant glass to have been installed at the Oculus since March 15. The glazing should be finished on Monday [...].

With help from volunteers, we took pictures of dozens of buildings and found that on average, blinds or shades covered about 59 percent of the window area. And over 75 percent of buildings had more than half of their window area covered. As the study puts it, “Tenants are moving into these rooms with a view, but more often than not, can’t see out the window.”

Offering a small-campus environment in the heart of a historic, dynamic downtown, the University of Washington Tacoma is often cited as one of the most important factors in Tacoma’s renaissance. Over the next few weeks we're going to present our three favorites from the 2012 myMarvin Architect's Challenge. The myMarvin Architect's Challenge winners projects are original designs, built within the last ten years, which incorporate Marvin® windows and/or doors.

Marvin is proud to showcase some of the architectural community’s most
inspired work in our annual Architect’s Challenge

First up is the Leicester House in Asheville, NC, by Eric Gartner of SPG Architects.

This hilltop residence, located at the edge of a wooded knoll in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, has expansive southern and western views. A hint of the views is provided through the glass door, but it is not until entry that the full impact of the hilltop views can be experienced.
