The Flatiron Building is still up for grabs after auction winner fails to make deposit

Ownership of Manhattan’s iconic Flatiron Building is still up in the air after the surprise winning bidder at last week’s auction failed to follow through on a $19 million deposit that would have guaranteed his sole ownership of the building, which has been vacant for years.

Last week, the private equity firm known as Abraham Trust came out on top of a whirlwind auction that was initiated as part of a lawsuit brought against the building’s minority owner, Nathan Silverstein, by his partners to determine who takes over the sole controlling stake and can therefore decide its future.

As reported by the Commercial Observer, the firm subsequently missed the deadline to make its required 10% deposit on the property it bought for $190 million by Friday. This will set off a ripple effect, as the partnership that originally brought the suit and placed second in the auction is apparently declining its option to make the purchase at their final bid of $189.5 million. A protracted battle over control of one of New York City’s most iconic buildings will finally be settled at auction later this month. A group of developers will hash out their ownership of the Flatiron Building after a State Supreme Court judge ruled a sale could move forward on March 22 at Mannion Auctions. The auctioneer, Matthew D. Mannion of Mannion Auctions, LLC, confirmed that the sale is public — meaning anyone can bid, and the Flatiron Building is therefore anyone’s to win.

The city’s landmark first skyscraper, designed by Daniel Burnham and Frederick Dinkelberg has sat empty since publishing house Macmillan left the building for greener pastures of FiDi in early 2019. However, the four majority owners of the property aren’t looking to sell, according to quotes they provided to Hyperallergic. “Our plan is hopefully to maintain ownership. We’re going to bid for the 25 percent,” explained GFP Real Estate Chairman Jeffrey Gural.

The minority partner they’re trying to force out, Nathan Silverstein, says it’s a matter of “different viewpoints with people who evidently get upset too quickly.” Gural added that the plan would then be to lease each of the 22 floors individually, adding that his only strategy heading into next week’s auction is to “play it by ear.”

Tokyo’s beloved Nakagin Capsule Tower may be getting its speculated second digital life after all thanks to a new metaverse project from the firm of its original designer Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates (KKAA) and the NFT platform OpenSea.

In an exclusive collaboration with the LAETOLI Corporation’s KABUKI-X venture, the firm is now auctioning off the rights to reconstruct their founder’s most famous Metabolic work in both the physical and digital realms only a few months removed from the neglected tower’s ongoing demolition, which began formally at the end of April. Bidders will have the chance to reconstruct the tower inside the metaverse and at the global site of their choice using CAD data and a digital model of the tower produced in Revit by design partners BDP.

Frank Gehry's twin crocodile sculptures will star in Bonhams' upcoming LA auction

Two sculptural pendant crocodile designs that once formed the centerpiece of Frank Gehry’s most significant mid-career designs are now for sale at Bonhams as part of the auction house’s first Modern Designs | Art sale of the year.

The pair is predicted to fetch somewhere in the $50,000–70,000 and $30,000–50,000 range respectively when the hammer drops in Los Angeles on March 8th.

The sculptures were created as part of Gehry’s 1983 commission from restaurateurs Bruce and Rebecca Marder for the design of the interior of their then-new Venice, California restaurant called Rebecca’s.

Leading architects donate creative works to support racial justice

Launched July 1st by a group of students and alumni from the Harvard GSD, Design Yard Sale is a month-long fundraising event that "sells and auctions creative works to support [Colloqate Design and The Bail Project], two organizations fighting systemic, and anti-Black racism." Creative works by people like Frank Gehry, Billie Tsien, and Denise Scott Brown have been donated to the effort and are available for auction. The pursuit has already raised over $80,000 and has a goal od reaching $100,00 by the end of the month.

Some highlights of items up for auction include blueprints of Robert Venturi’s Vanna Venturi House, donated by Venturi’s longtime engineering partner, Keast & Hood. Additional objects include a collage by Tsien, signed prints of Scott Brown’s historic 1960s-era photos of Las Vegas exclusive to Design Yard Sale, a concrete stool by Jerome Byron, and a limited-edition signed lithograph of a Gehry drawing.

World Trade Center blueprints pulled from trash up for sale

Blueprints for the original World Trade Center have gone on sale at the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair on Friday after a Colorado man pulled them out of the trash. The set of plans for sale represents the largest floor plan of the Twin Towers complex ever offered for sale, according to the New York-based Janes Cummins Bookseller. Cummins told the Associated Press that he expected the sale to be in the six figures.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the plan set includes over 500 original plans from the 1960s and once belonged to Joseph Solomon, one of the World Trade Center architects.

Lost masterpieces by Frank Lloyd Wright are up for auction

Two pairs of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed chairs will be up for auction on December 13th in New York via Christie's auction house. Each pair are estimated to sell between $200,000 to $300,000.

Designed as part of Wright's Ward W. Willits House in Highland Park, Illinois, the chairs were completed in 1902. Considered one of the first of the Prairie School houses, Wright emphasized the dwelling's horizontal lines with an expansive cruciform plan. The dining suite housed a table accompanied by six tall back chairs and five intermediate back chairs that could be situated flexibly throughout the space.

According to Christie's, the four chairs for sale remained in the Willits house from 1902 until the passing of the Willitses in the early 1950s, when the house and its contents were sold to a new owner.

As of this writing, the home’s destiny looks promising if uncertain. “There are 1,500 monuments to the Confederacy, which is absurd,” Mendoza says. “There are 76 monuments to the civil rights movement. When Rosa Parks' Detroit home went up for auction a few weeks ago, the auction house Guernsey's struggled to find a buyer, despite the wide media attention the house has received.

“If all else fails, theatre and visual artist Robert Wilson and his Watermill Art Foundation in Long Island, New York, have also offered to take the house for a temporary exhibition. Another option, Mendoza says, is to take it back to Detroit,” artnet reports.

In 2016, the Berlin-based US artist Ryan Mendoza and Rhea McCauley, the niece of Rosa Parks, teamed up to save the civil rights activist’s Detroit home from demolition. Now, the structure is heading to another block: the New York auction house Guernsey’s, where it is due to be auctioned tomorrow (26 July) with an estimate of $1m-$3m.

Park's house is part of the 700-lot of African American Historic & Cultural Treasures up for sale at the New York auction house Guernsey’s. McCauley initially bought the house for just $500 back in 2016 reaching out to Mendoza to help preserve the house. In 2017 the structure was safely disassembled and reassembled in Berlin where it was open to the public hosting sound performances inside.

Rosa Parks originally lived in the three-bedroom house with 17 relatives after she left the south in 1957 for Detroit. Mendoza and McCauley have hopes that the house will end up in an institution where it can inspire visitors with Park's life and legacy in civil rights.

A 156m (511ft) skyscraper in northern Shanxi province has been listed on Taobao, China's largest e-commerce website, by a local court. [...] Construction on the building first began in 2006 and was due to be completed by 2011, according to Chinese state media outlet Xinhua. However, the developer ran into funding troubles. For those former guests and architectural buffs who lamented the demolition of the iconic Hotel Okura Tokyo, they can soon preserve a piece of it in their homes. Hotel officials plan to sell on the Internet some of the furniture and fixtures used in the guest rooms and restaurants during the main building's 53-year history, with the proceeds going to charity. The Frank Gehry-designed Winton Guest House will embark on another lengthy roadtrip, moving roughly 1,200 miles from its current location in Owatonna, Minnesota to its new home in New York's Hudson River Valley. The geometric house sold for $750,000 at the Wright auction house in Chicago on Tuesday. The new owners, who wish to remain unidentified, paid an additional "buyer's premium" of $155,000 for the guest house, bringing up the total to $905,000. Wright listed the house's starting bid at $850,000.

The new owners pledged to restore and preserve the Guest House on private property, according to Dr. Victoria M. Young, professor of modern architectural history and chair of the Art History Department at the University of St. Thomas, which owned the house since 2007 as part of the Daniel C. Gainey Conference Center. Since the university sold the Gainey Center to Meridian Behavioral Health Services last summer, the house was scheduled to begin relocation this June to meet its August 201...

UPDATE: The Winton Guest House sold for $750,000 today at Wright's "Design Masterworks" auction in Chicago. During the approximately 40-minute livestream that began promptly at noon Central Time, the Winton Guest House was auctioned among several furniture pieces including a Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen Chair and Table, and a George Nelson Marshmallow Sofa. Although Wright's website listed $850,000 as the starting bid for the Winton Guest House, the bespeckled auctioneer Richard Wright opened up its bidding lot at $500,000 and increased it by $50,000 increments. As silence filled the room, the auctioneer nearly deemed the house as Pass/Unsold until a phone bidder named Michael purchased it for $750,000. The Van Alen Institute and online auction platform Paddle8 recently opened up their 2015 Auction of Art + Design Experiences that lets eager (and wealthy) bidders opt for basically hanging out with some of today's famous architects and designers.

This year's auction boasts an international list of activities with 24 leading creatives, like sitting in a hot-tub roundtable with Charles Renfro in his beach house, biking through downtown L.A. with Michael Maltzan on his daily route, birdwatching with Jeanne Gang, flying in a helicopter with Norman Foster over the River Thames, and testing the smoke ring generator at Copenhagen's waste-to-energy power plant with Bjarke Ingels and BIG partner Jakob Lange.

Frank Gehry's Winton Guest House was recently announced to be up for auction on May 19 in Chicago. Designed for Mike and Penny Winton during the '80s in Lake Minnetonka, MN, the Guest House helped propel Gehry into international stardom in the '90s. Over 400 pieces that archive the construction and design of the presidential Kennedy family's Wexford House will soon be up for sale at a live auction on February 19 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts that will be hosted by Boston-based auction company RR Auction. 10x10 Drawing the City London is an annual fundraising event established by British architect Tim Makower and organized by charity group Article 25 that gets its name from the 100-square grid that captures one particular area in the city of London.

Each square of the grid is assigned to 100 participants, who are typically some of the U.K.'s most well-known and emerging architects, designers, and artists. Participants will then create and donate an original work of art inspired by the buildings and public spaces within their assigned square. For 2014, The Renzo Piano-designed Shard will be the center of the grid.

"A Dolls’ House" auction raises nearly £90,000 for KIDS charity in London

The Cathedral Group's A Dolls' House raised close to £90,000 at the end of the live auction event on Nov. 11 at Bonhams in London. The project invited 20 well-known UK architects, who collaborated with artists and other designers, to create their own doll houses with the goal to raise £100,000 for the KIDS charity. Architects included Adjaye Associates, FAT, MAKE, Zaha Hadid Architects, Coffey Architects, and Studio Egret West.

The doll houses were then auctioned for online from September to noon on Nov. 11, and finally at the live auction event that evening. To read more on the project, click here.

A Dolls' House, a project by Cathedral Group, adds a contemporary twist to a childhood pastime. The UK developer rounded up 20 big-name UK architecture firms -- like Adjaye Associates, Zaha Hadid Architects, Coffey Architects, dRMM, Duggan Morris, FAT, MAKE, and Studio Egret West -- in collaboration with designers and artists to have each of them create their own modern version of a doll house that will be auctioned in November to raise £100,000 for KIDS, a charity that supports disabled children, young people, and their families throughout England. The doll houses will also be presented and exhibited at Bonhams before they are auctioned at an evening event on November 11.

Aside from showing off the personal visions of each design team, these one-of-a-kind doll houses include at least one element designed specifically as a learning aid for children with a disability.
